Firefox 4 hits third beta stage, gets touchy-feely with Windows 7

Where's the Linux version with the new UI?

No mention of changes to the linux version. Does this mean the linux build *still* doesn't have the new UI? Come on mozilla, get with the program...

I'm currently testing it on my Mac as my main browser and it's working well. Really the like the User Studies. Loads stats on how the browser is used, interesting...

Good showing in Eastern Scotland

We had clear skies from 11pm until midnight and saw a good bunch of really bright meteors. Well worth staying up a little later than normal for.

Thanks Perseid ;)

How sweet, MS have 'goals' and 'aims' to solve problems in the scietific community. It doesn't mean they're going to achieve them. I think MS doesn't have the first clue what is actually required, but they are talking it up as much as they can.

Meanwhile, the real solutions providers will continue to provide the to scientific community in an open and engaged manner. For example IBM has been trying to solve exactly these problems through their PERCS project and this has been going on for years with the aim to deliver this year.

MS is desperate to move out of their desktop/small server space, but this ain't it.

Move along MS, nothing to see.

Yay!

Idiot!

Fingerprints are far from foolproof. There have been several high-profile cases of people being wrongly charged, tried and sometimes found guilty purely on the basis of fingerprints. Including a recent case in Scotland where a *policewoman* was sent down, because the fingerprint lab refused to admit they may have made a mistake.

By having everyone's on a databases only increases the chances of a mis-identification. Then you need to make sure you have an alibi at *all* times...

I can't get on with Safari.

Actually Camino is also a nice OS X friendly port of Firefox, but doesn't use the same extensions :(

There is a possible third conclusion

You mentioned (paraphrased):

1. People with Win7 aren't surfing

2. Win7 sales figures are lies, lies, lies...

I'm adding another:

3. The browser choice screen is actually *working* <gasp>!

I'm guessing it's probably a combination of 2 and 3.

WTF?

Watno Firefox...?

Really?!

That's always my no. 1 install. In fact, why no browser at all? Any of Chrome, Safari, Opera or Firefox is preferable to IE.

I'm not interested pounds per gb. I just want a good quality ssd with a low unit price. This could be it if we don't get shafted in the exchange rate.

Acer predicts end of cheap PC era

MS Tax

Acer are only saying this because they want to bundle Win7 with all their cheap PC/netbooks. The manufacturer's price for Win7 is (from what I've read) substantially more than XP, so it's the software that's driving up prices not hardware...

Don't buy Win7 and you'll still be able to get cheap PCs. Sadly, Acer seem to be a main culprit in not supplying linux netbooks anymore :(

Clearly MS has been leaning on them and the others! Are we back to the good 'ol days, again?

Why so expensive?

What happed to the 'cheap' part of SCC? Is this some sort of con orchestrated by MS in order to make Win7 'seem' affordable. I note the lack Linux for the latest crop of netbooks - that would show the true cost of win7.

A netbook needs to be <£300 (preferably <£250) otherwise it's just a small, underpowered laptop...

Has anyone found out exactly the source of this vulnerability or was the black-hat tipped off (by MS)?

Plod to retain personal data from DNA innocents

No it isn't!

Hogwash!

Short segments of DNA can be synthesised very cheaply, but doing a whole person's DNA is not feasible.

This also assumes you know the DNA fingerprint of the 'plant', which is very unlikely.

It's much easier to get hold of the 'plant's DNA (hair, blood, etc.) and add it to the crime scene.

That's because the Asrock 330 *ION* uses the nVidia *ION* platform which has much better graphics capability than the default Intel one (as Kevin 6 mentioned).

Now onto the rest...

Great and about time too.

When are EDF, GDF, Air France, etc going to get scrutinised then? EDF in particular was able to invest in and eventually buy several private companies across the EU while still being supported by the French state. Meanwhile the French were very keen to keep foreign investment in their companies to a minimum. Protectionsim at it's worst....

In other words...

Microsoft is again trying to out-guess what it is *I* want to do. This has all the hallmarks of clippy all over again.

I don't know about others, but generally I do know what it is I'm looking for: a hotel in barcelona, how many moons jupiter has, etc. I rarely type random words in the search bar to see what 'bubbles up from Twitter'...

Why is it MS always think they know better than *I* do on how I want to use *my* computer? FAIL!
