Foot-long slab too big? Microsoft 'has a 7-incher' to stroke

Big_Boomer Silver badge

How much?

I'd buy a Win8 tablet/slab if they weren't so damned expensive. I bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 just after Xmas for £320 and wasn't going to pay nearly double that for 2" more and way less apps. iOS was right out of the question due to Apple lock downs on WiFi Analyzing apps and similar restrictions, as well as the price. Apps and price is where it's at. Fiddling with yer inches just gets you arrested. :-)

New rules to end cries of 'WTF... a £10 online booking fee?'

Rip off

I have always hated all of these "add-on" fees. Be they booking fees, surcharges, cost recovery, or any other form of fee that the company will have to pay. So, here is a message to all companies that charge such fees:

Why not just include the "fee" in the price of your item? I have no objection to paying a slightly more to have tickets emailed/posted to me rather than having to travel to the theatre myself to buy them. I feel the same about the ISP con-artists who sell broadband at £3 a month (Plus £15pm Line Rental). Why not just say £18pm Including Line Rental? Be INCLUSIVE! And the first person to ban the practice of selling items at £189.99 or £199.95 gets my vote too. What a waste of space that is. Just sell it for £190 or £200. Nobody cares about the 1p saving.

Keep It Simple Stupid! 2 wires that run from the battery (via a fuse!) to 2 separate connectors at the rear of spaceplane. When the rocket fire the thrust will blast them out way before the spaceplane starts to move. You could even tape the bare ends of the wires to the plane with conductive tape as you only need the connection functional up to launch.

Farcebook

What is worst about the App is that you cannot uninstall it even on current phones without rooting them. It's a resource hog and I don't want it installed, let alone running. No I wouldn't buy any smartphone that was based on Farcebook, and if they keep this up I may well do what several of my friends (real friends) have done and shutdown their account. Have a website and an app by all means but don't try and force it on people who don't want it. All you do is alienate them.

Big_Boomer Silver badge

Yer not strange

I also find most site Apps a waste of time and most "mobile" website are irritating shite. I prefer the whole "desktop" website experience.

One of the things that the designers of mobile browsers might want to add is the Option to ALWAYS present itself as a "desktop" browser. I can do it in Chrome for Android but have to select it for every damned page,... after loading the page <Grrrrr>. On my 10" tablet I do not want to ever see a mobile website or be asked to download their App. If I think their App might be useful I can get it from Google Play. On my 4.5" phone I may use some Apps but even there I don't want them thrust at me like some company phallus begging to be fondled.

Now if it's something you access and use regularly then an App makes sense but the whole point of a web browser is it's versatility to display a wide variety of sites.

You would need 10 of those a year for 50 years to make it marginally habitable, and even then the atmosphere would just bleed off again due to Mars low mass. Remember that Mars has a surface pressure of 0.087psi which from our point of view (14.69psi) might as well be a vacuum. Give up on terraforming Mars and other planets and learn to live in space itself. Cheaper, easier, and there is a LOT more of it.

TOO MANY ******* PEOPLE

is the problem. Whether they are driving or cycling or sitting at home watching TV. People = CO2 emissions, not to mention methane and other nasties. So, if the world wishes to sort out Global Warming and related issues, then POPULATION control/reduction is the only way forward. Even if we reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a certain level per person, if there are more people there are more gasses. Long term, ONLY population reduction will work. Either that or we will all eventually cook in our own juices from our own waste heat.

Doctors & Nurses

My personal experiences of both during my better half's recent surgeries were extremely varied. One of the Doctors I found to be human and responsive and warm. The other was cold and remote but an amazing surgeon and top of his field (I checked!)

A couple of the nurses in ICU were superb. Efficient and fully in control, yet warm and understanding. Others were cold and uninterested.

Once on the main ward most of the nurses were Ok but she did nickname one of them Hirohito and another one Hitler.

I consider myself pretty empathic and am one of the few men I know who can always see the other persons point of view, even if I disagree with it. However, I am rarely "passionate" about anything and before switching to IT I was an Electronics Engineer. Sounds to me like somebody already knew what results he wanted.

Cables?

When are BT and the other "providers" out there going to realise that relying on a 50+ year old pair of corroding wires is no basis for a modern communications system? Are their sales people asleep? Start offering re-cabling to people out in the sticks. Charge a one off fee plus higher monthly charges on say a 2 year contract and many people (Drew included I am sure) would LEAP at the chance to get a high quality fibre phone/data connection. BT keep banging on about FTTC and their Infinity Broadband which is fine for towns and cities, but what they should be offering outside those areas is FTTH (Fibre To The Home). Finally, why do they try to charge extortionate "install" costs when more often than not they just clip the new cable (or fibre) to the side of the old cable.

Fallout

The Fallout series is very good and while it's also an adventure style game it is an FPS. Surely the GTA 3 and later series warrants a mention as many aspects of it are FPS. How many hours have been whiled away sitting on a rooftop with the rocket launcher just mangling the Police choppers and tanks. :-)

The one I enjoyed the most was probably Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny. Compared to what else was around (Commander Keen anyone) it was groundbreaking. Another good one was Shadow Warrior. Basically it was Duke Nukem 3D with a Chinese main character and different taglines like "Ah so, he fall in half"

My top 3 for fun would be;

1- Wolfenstein 3D

2- Fallout 3

3- Duke Nukem 3D

Win8 looks like making my life more difficult, so MS can whistle if they think I'm spending money on it. If they don't make Win8 or it's successor "IT Dept" useful then I guess it will be a flavour of Linux that we use next.

I have a Win8 install running in VirtualBox and with some tweaks I have managed to solve the screen res issues and now have my Start menu back (thanks Classic Menu) and it's useable. BUT, it's slow, clunky and I seem to spend half my life having to find ways around things. It reminds me of Vista/2008 out-of-the-box security settings. Intrusive and counterproductive. I'm sure some people will buy it and it'll get it's own little user "faction" just like Windows 7 Phone and Palm got, but Android/iOS levels of market penetration? Nah!
