Foxconn mulls solar panels, sticking Apple where sun doesn't shine

Re: If...

even if at current efficiencies they are actually in total (inc production, materials, transport to destination etc) more environmentally damaging than a nice coal power plant. Still it makes the ecofreakies sleep easier at night like their "more harmful than a gas guzzling range rover" priuses...

staff unfailingly polite, helpful and eager

"The real killer feature for the newb though has nothing to do with software or hardware, it’s all about the experience you get in an Apple Store. It’s second to none, with staff unfailingly polite, helpful and eager to help the lost, confused and downright incompetent get the best from their iDevices. A near no-questions-asked replacement policy is the cherry on the cake."

Never been to the Brighton Apple store then. The staff there are rude, downright unhelpful and I don't think 20mins wait for your prebooked 'genius' bar appointment you are on time to is really on. Esp when the hipster twat staff seems to want to talk to each other not you. No questions asked replacement also fails these days with an ipad that is 12 months old (under the 2 year warranty guideline from the EU) refused any assistance at all unless pay out over £200 for a duff battery! Hellish experience all in all.

Microsoft's Surface plan means the world belongs to Android now

Alastair Dodd 1
WTF?

So if there's all this fragmentation which makes it harder to develop for why is Android still much cheaper to develop for then iOS?

Fragmentation is v overrated as an issue - surely due to fragmentation windows apps need to run on well over 3000 different devices if not more? Yes this causes issues and increased development time over a closed system like iOS but no way insurmountable and in some ways can be considered almost negligible.

I don't doubt Apple have the top end of the tablet market sown up but like graphics cards that is not where the real money is mid to low range is where the profits and the real battle will be - shame surface seems to be aimed at the wrong part.

But they haven't gone totally in house - TomTom appears to be providing a big chunk of the data and possible systems for the new maps so doesn't this make it more of a 2 fingers up at Google gesture rather than saving that much money? “For every change you need to make in Android it costs $50,000 in developer time,” he said.

Pulled that figure out of his arse & doubt its wildly different cost for any OS mobile device.

Don't think it;s just "everyone knows someone in IT" for support either, we already tell users we don't support their own stuff but some just don't accept it. Even more difficult to deal with when that's a director as rules just don't apply.

Garriott is a great self publicist but stop giving him airtime for this sort of thing - he cocked up NCsoft US quite dramatically and his last title Tabula Rasa was flawed. Portalariam has so far failed to make any impact - this is just a soundbyte to get in the news.

Mind you I would say the gap between consoles and handhelds is getting closer but as portables are just handheld consoles this is semantics anyway it's a typical Lord British comment of hot air.

What should a sci-fi spaceship REALLY look like?

Alastair Dodd 1

hmm facts a bit wrong but entertaining read

‘engine on a stick’ approach was an influence on other TV sci-fi shows such as Blake’s 7 and (later) Firefly.

In Firefly the main engine is the rear bulbous abdomen, the engines on a stick are maneuvering thrusters and rotatable so make perfect sense

very little to do with the quailty
