RAM Timings

I've found that the biggest cause of crashes on non OEM PCs is the RAM timings not being set in the bios correctly. The bios often resets them when you upgrade it and then phantom crashes start occurring. Its not something the average user would think about.

Dixons only let you return items if they are faulty, and not because you decided you didn't want them/didn't perform as expected.

Should be interesting to see what happens down the line. I'm guessing they are just going to have one display model on show at the largest PC worlds and about 5 in the stock room that never sell.

Id love to see if Dixons have stumped up any cash upfront to sell this things.

I foresee many people returning their Arm based Windows RT tablets when they finally work out they can't run windows apps. The i5 version will no doubt be too bulky and heavy to be successfully used as a consumer tablet - but I'm sure it will find a niche in industries.

What in the world makes them think that people are going to pay a premium for this product. Crappy hardware priced just below i5 hardware - the mind boggles.

And look how well web only apps went down on iOS.

Why don't they focus their efforts on making a consumer friendly version of linux, instead of tweaking chrome so it makes web apps look more like desktop apps. But they could already do that by just porting and promoting Android to/on x86 - and that doesn't fit their vision where your every keystroke goes through their servers.

Its pretty easy to make an iTunes account without any payment info attached to it, and that will let you download as many free apps as you want.

Simply google "iTunes account without credit card" and there are a bazillion articles on it, top of the list apple's own on how to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

And if for some reason you have given your child your iTunes account then you can go to parental restrictions and disable in app purchases. You have been able to for years.

I personally hate IAP, so i have even disabled them via that method on my own iOS devices. No paranoia that I'm gona get shafted.

So maybe you should do some research before you get yourself into a pious rage.

Like most university projects, the university owns the software that students submit for marking. This is why a fair number of PhDs/masters in the CS sector never materialise as the writers stop their research at the university and sell it to a company/spin it off as a startup.

As a way to counter this, Bristol uni offered students a 30% stake in a business derived from their degree/phd submissions.

If the finnish university followed this model that would leave students with about 23p for every £1 the app is listed at. Probably less after "costs" are deducted. So not great.

And as I said above, the Uni owns it, so the student has no entitlement to anything.

As far as i am aware, the 30% only applies to the .ibooks format. So if you were to save it out as a PDF you would be free to sell it as you pleased.

No gallery widgets etc, but no walled garden either.

No doubt someone will come up with a program that converts the .ibooks format into something for other platforms that preserves the rich features, and no doubt apple will change their eula when that happens.

Im not sure how useful this unity approach is. Menus often provide visual feedback - for example a list of the IM networks I'm connected to in adium and what each of their status is. In a unity app you would have to take up a large amount of GUI space to display this information that could simply be placed in a menu.

Including a touchscreen that doesn't really add much often used functionality to the device isnt going to catch on too quickly amongst manufacturers, except maybe as a build to order option. Unless, of course, Intel puts its food down and strictly mandates it 's inclusion - at which point everyone switches to the AMD spec.
