It's official: Nokia bets on Microsoft for smartphones

dogged

Massive shock of self-realization

I just realized why I want Microsoft and Nokia to succeed. Partly, sure it's because more competition is good for everyone.

But mostly it's because so many people don't. The frothing hatred we see against the Wp7 platform makes me want to buy a Nokia WP7 just because you clearly don't want to let me have one.

I also hope this streak of contrariness is very common and that you all die in an immense fire.

fashions change

Slower in hardware than clothing but nevertheless, they change very quickly. If Nokia backed Android and it became unfashionable, this would be just as poor a decision.

Memo to Microsoft, RIM, Nokia: Quit copying Apple!

dogged
FAIL

Dude, take off the blindfold

You think Apple made everything better? Better than Nokia or SE?

It's not true. They made it shinier and they gave it to journalists for free, hence generating huge amounts of favourable press while AT THE SAME TIME pretty much guaranteeing that anything that didn't look like something made by Apple would get slated in hardware reviews.

The Reg are a bit of an honourable exception. You can tell from the way they actually seem to like WP7, for example. But Apple don't mind; the commentards below every reasonable piece are already brainwashed into hating it anyway.

That only works in the vicinity of a microcell. Otherwise, your location could be anywhere in a radius of up to 2000m, unless you happen to be in a crossover in which case triangulation can narrow it down a bit. Growing weed isn't victimless

One way of doing it is to rent a normal house, paint it white, rip out all doors and non-loadbearing walls, grow weed for six months and then piss off, rent and bills unpaid.

The reason this is a tactic that can make money is, er, because it's illegal. If it were legal to grow your own then the growing of weed would be victimless. As it is, it belongs to organized criminals.

Remember folks, any party that supports prohibition is endorsing organized crime. Which criminal will you vote for?

Feds subpoena Twitter for info on WikiLeaks backer

dogged
IT Angle

The interesting part...

is how much data Twitter actually stores.

Does it, for example, store IP addresses from which posts are made? We can assume it stores the actual posts but those are published anyway; you wouldn't need a subpoena for those provided you had, er, an Internet connection and a web browser.

IP addresses may be handy in providing locational data (or, with VPNs and proxies, they may not). MAC addresses definitely would but HTTP doesn't transmit those by default.

El Reg, if you're going to post this kind of stuff, please give us a hint at what you reckon the Feds are actually hoping to achieve with it.

scaremongering

a) I don't see the difference at all. Think logically, Dan Paul. A DVI/HDMI lead is output only. In order to get input you'd need a second lead back to the main processing hardware (like the USB cable on your webcam). If you're scared, unplug it.

b) "This is especially true with the insecurity of MS Software."

I would like to see ratio in print, from Sophos or somebody similar which details number of discovered insecurities against worldwide user-base. Is MS software really insecure or are a lot more people trying to hack it than linux/osx./other?

I suspect the latter. Because it's everywhere. It's the same reason people write cop shows for TV but not for semaphore.

@AC: "MS gets no love"

Does that automagically mean that everything they make or write must by definition be bad?

Try a thought experiment - Assume that the stars are right, the moon is in the 8th house and your lottery tickets have come up. And on the same day, Microsoft release a phone OS which is clearly and by any standards a significant improvement on anything else available.

Under those circumstances, do you then automatically hate it and want it to fail?

If so, why? Specifically, why would you want users to contend with some less intuitive/secure/useful when it's available? Why would you want to reduce the overall quality of available systems?

I realize we're pretty deep into philosophy here but I want to know.

Disclaimer: I have not up or downvoted

and I do not work for Microsoft.

HOWEVER: Penny Arcade seem convinced that Kinect will fly and they know their games. The 360 has (I think) greater market penetration than any of its competitors and MS always replaced the duff ones promptly and for free.

And the three people I know who own a Windows Phone 7 device say it's awesome.

It's entirely possible that people downvote you not so much because they're astroturfing but because your blind hate makes your comments seem as if they were written by an utter tool.

In another year, we'll know if you were right. Until then, shut up.

I've put WHS into a couple of tiny - 3 seat max - businesses as an automated backup/storage box and it worked very nicely. The fact that they could increase storage at any point without reconfiguring was extremely popular.

Not so much on the Reg; every time there was an WHS box reviewed, you could hear the commentards howling about "WAT NO NAS THIS SUX LOL" from five sites away. So I guess those guys'll be happy now.

The mentality issue

I think Van still instinctively thinks in terms of hubs and terminals. Now, with the growth in home NAS - effectively servers - this becomes more feasible as an outlook again.

I've seen a few comments about becoming a pay-per-meg host and those are relevant, but consider for a second:

If everyone hosts on their own "home server" with devices by default publishing content to that server, then infrastructure costs can be subsumed in broadband subs. Admittedly, this would require ISPs not to be jackasses (and IPv6 is not encouraging in this regard) but I think it can work. Distributed hosting as the future, why not?
