I've got a Lumia 920.
The old app didn't show ads. The new app showed ads until Google got it pulled.
The article is wrong and interestingly it's wrong in a way that makes Google look good and Microsoft look bad.

Really? Unless I read the report entirely backwards, revenues are up again this year and operating costs are down. The 900m on Surface was defrayed against corporation tax so that didn't hurt their bottom line either.

This IS the XBox Live charge. What we see here is just more people whining about it. Anyone who actually cared about $63/year bought their subscription half-price on Ebay or got a PS3 instead and those people - who clearly weren't in the market for an Xbox One anyway - are the ones shitting themselves over this "extra" (but actually completely unchanged) charge.
"Xbox Live Gold now includes Skype and some other shit as well as what it already supplied" isn't such a click-baity headline, though.
It's weird that this is new. Even that most hated and "half-baked" of phone operating systems has had this from day 1.

My eyesight is better than 20/20 but I suffer from degenerative monochromachia. One problem this causes is that coloured text often becomes illegible.
When it's been deliberately munged AND coloured on top, it's literally impossible to read.
I don't have a solution but I really wish that captchas didn't come in so many multicoloured varieties.
I've been thinking about this and the usual slew of car analogies are wrong.
It's not like the phone market. It actually reminds me of nothing so much as the Home Computer market in the late 80's. The myriad of 8-bit Home Computers has pretty much died, people are buying Segas and Nintendos for their kids and Ataris or Amstrad Word Processing boxes for themselves, usually running CP/M.
And then there's this new thing called Windows RT which is kind of like buying a 286 running DOS. You'd have to be an idiot to buy one of those. Right? DOS sucks, after all. DOOM hasn't been written yet. You can't play Mortal Kombat on that thing and it costs a fortune.
Much the way that the 286 PC should have died on the vine, logically speaking, RT should also die on the vine. The 286 went on to become the box we're all using - yes, even you, Mac user - mainly because IBM.
The real question here - and please leave the gibbering fanboi arguments at home for this one - is, are Microsoft powerful enough to be IBM in this century? It's an interesting one. Almost every damn business in the world runs their stuff so they're arguably even stronger. And it's not as if IBM were ever well liked by their clients - far from it, in fact - so can we not stoop to the "but people hate..." stuff, please?
If they are, the tablet market may eventually follow the home computing market. If they're not, it won't.

However, distributed binaries cannot be modified without trashing them anyway so any new souce modification comes from the developer and is then distributed and runs, er compiled.

I think they do. For example, when MS wrote down $900m on Surface, that was their total remaining investment. Any further surfaces sold are pure profit. This articles seems to lead us to believe that they are gone and that $843m is all the sales they'll ever make. Disingenuous, El Reg. And you know it.

Except that a whole bunch of companies say it isn't are going to the Supreme Court and the Attorney General (or whatever his title is) to get the secrecy overruled so that they can prove it's not true. The list includes Yahoo, Google and, er, Microsoft.

Just one thought; being in the country often means that you are further away from access to emergency services when compared to those in urban areas.
