Aussie outfit offers Brits rock-bottom price tellies

Chezstar
Thumb Up

They are tops!

I have a couple of the Kogan tellies, plus one of their vacuum cleaners, and for their price (Australia is generally more expensive for equipment than a lot of other countries), you get a lot for the money.

The quality of the build on the units is top notch, customer service is good, price is good, and in a lot of cases they improve on things pretty well.

For instance, one of my Kogan LCD's (32 inch) uses an LG panel, but (thankfully!) does away with LG's absolutely hideous control interface, and replaces it with Kogans own design, which is much better.

If the price point works for you, they are definitely worth a try.

Here's hoping this plucky Aussie can make it in the UK! Competition FTW! :)

Acer outs mega-format media box

Dead Vulture

Works for me!

Who needs a DVDR? All my storage is on the network....and if for some weird reason I felt the need to actually burn off a useless disc to get scratched etc, I would just do it from my computer, or the server, or my laptop, or anything else that has a dvd drive in it!

Seriously, why do people assume a small device like this that is directed towards playing NETWORKED media should have a dvd drive? Me thinks you miss the point!

Gravestone, because that's where dvd discs belong.

Good on ya Dell!

Every single Dell machine I get my hands on (As I recommend Dell machines for a fair few clients looking for standard type systems) immediately gets the install disc thrown back into the drive, and in she goes for a full reformat and reinstall.

I've never had one of the Dell branded systems delivered to a client with the stock / out of factory install in place. Who knows what someone has loaded on there by accident / what virus or malware has snuck in? No thanks.

So go for it Dell, install yet another package to go alongside the billion other trial editions of anything you can find, it all disappears under the mighty install disc at boot time :)

Mines the new one with fresh, empty, sleek pockets!

Star Wars set for 3D rehash

Paris Hilton

I think this is a great idea!

I can't watch 3D movies, my brain is too intelligent to be fooled into thinking that a flat image is actually 3D, at which point, in walks Mr Headache to remind me not to sit through this so called 3D pap.

But that's fine, it gives me some extra pub time having a few drinks while every other schmuck hands over the extra cash to watch the same sad old movie again.

It gets rid of all them ratbag kids from my favourite drinking establishments, so good on you Georgie boy! Got anything else you can drag out of the basement and re-re-re-rehash a few more times? Can you start releasing the films on a Friday night instead of a Thursday night in Australia, so that it makes after work drinkies more worthwhile? :)

Paris, because she would be down at the pub too, she can't wear the glasses, it makes her look less attractive :)

CES pitted for Intel Wireless Display boost

Chezstar
Paris Hilton

I get the feeling...

It feels like Intel are taking a niche market, and making a niche in it, in order to put a niche inside that niche.

Wireless HDMI? Yes please, make it plentiful! Give me just one power cable to my tellie, and i'm happy as a pig in mud.

Wireless networking? Yes please, although my house is gigabit wired, the wireless is handy for laptops.

Wireless display? ....Why? I can just copy the file over onto my media box, and play it from there. In fact, I could just save it to my storage server, and just play it on any other device on the network.

My clients get confused enough with one wireless concept, let alone three.

Paris, because she makes my head hurt less than intel do with their niche, niche, niche design philosophy.

HP punts MicroServer for SMBs

MediaSmart in Business?

How can you suggest that the HP MediaSmart is an SMB-aired product?

What kind of person would suggest a company would put a product powered by something called Windows HOME server into their business? I've never seen the MediaSmart offered as anything other than a home server, anyone wanting to put one of those into a business is an idiot.

Or did you get fired for suggesting the above as a great idea?

This server is cheap (Well, cheap if you buy the base product and add your own gear to it!), and small, the kind of thing small businesses (Yes, the ones with 1-9 people working at it) want to see. It would sit nicely in the corner and act as a NAS with a few optional extras.

Paris, because she would put a MediaSmart into a business environment.

Aussie opposition will scrap firewall

Of course he opposes the filter....

He has to oppose the filter, in order to make people look away from the fact that they will also scrap the NBN if they get into power.

At which point, we won't need the filter, because our connection speeds will be so low, that kids will get up off their couches, and go outside to play.

At which point, the dodgy, trenchcoat wearing neighbour will be free to take pictures over the fence, without the government knowing!

See, Joe Hockey is promoting backyard paedophilia, why isn't this being reported in the news!!!

And this is how Australian elections are won, not on good policy making decisions, but bad smear campaigns.

Mine is the trenchcoat with the telephoto lens in the pocket....wait....

Bigfoot Networks Killer 2100 gaming network card

Chezstar
Jobs Horns

I call bollocks!

The Killer NIC software that is running in the background would negate the improvement in offloading network processing onto the NIC.

So, we benefit by offloading the TCP stack, then bog the system down by running yet another program on the computer?

Most plug in NIC's these days feature the ability to offload some of the TCP processing onto the card, this is nothing new, indeed it has been a feature of all server oriented NIC's for many a year, or even decade.

To top it off, your test is based on a "finger in the water" method. You tested it on one day/time, then changed the card for the Killer card, and tried again. The situation was NOT exactly the same, you couldn't control the network congestion and routing once the packets leave your router, so its a purely speculative guess on the improvement at best.

So, lets call it the Killer Networks Placebo NIC shall we? It makes you feel better about being hopelessly outclassed by that guy with the big sword when you are grinding for XP.

Jobs because if he could have sold this as the iKiller, he could have made a bazillion dollars off of peoples gullibility on yet another device....

Where do we sign up?

As a diabetic from a young age, I am looking forward to seeing one of these adorning at least one hand soon....imagine how long you could type without having to go for a break? OHS requirements my metal hand! (And possibly metal ass after some more development!)

Paris, because she could probably wear out the metal hand...
