Last place I worked at that had something similar was Nitrogen based - on the principle that fire isn't self-sustaining at less than 14% O2 partial pressure.

I agree - it's bad enough that i still resent the 2 hours wasted from my life, even though someone else paid (sister-in-law decided to 'treat' my wife and I )

RIP Harry Harrison: Stainless Steel Rat scurries no more

Dave Walker 1

Long liv the Stainless Steel Rat

He was, as the blurb on the back of the paperbacks said, 'The Monty Python of the spaceways' - his writing always had humour , dark though it may have been, and his prose was some of the most absorbing I have ever had the pleasure to read.

I hope someone options a few more of his works - Slippery Jim, Jason dinAlt and Bill (with two Ls) deserve some screen time...

Rest in peace, Harry - if I could write it in Esperanto, I would

BOFH: We don't need no stinkin' upgrade

Dave Walker 1

Sounds like a mish-mash of everyone's upgrade strategy. The only bit I didn't see was the 18month subscription upgrade with version 3, 3S, 4, 4S where it all looks the same on the outside, but some whizzy bits on the inside get changed, and you may notice a difference

iOS update woes prompt gnashing of teeth for Apple fans

Dave Walker 1

Fairly uneventful

No real problems here. Started downloading at 7:30 pm or so, 668Mb in 50 minutes.

The only problem was with iTunes backing up my 3GS - kept on getting an error. I had to create a new account and use that to back and restore. Finished by 11pm

Reminds me of school

I remember a physics experiment at school where you had to map the electric field around a sphere by measuring the deflection of a small flame. The reason that it stick in my memory is that the sphere used was a plastic ball covered in a metallic paint, and despite the strong exhortations to not measure too closely, at least one person would destroy the ball each time the experiment was run...

That's got to be a few years ago now, though
