Linus Torvalds targeted by honeytraps, claims Eric S. Raymond

Re: Hang on a mo, Eric

My gosh, a thoughtful and nuanced comment on the internet. *faints*

Seriously though, you're pretty much spot-on, there. In my experience, there is unfortunately no cause, however noble, that doesn't attract its share of people who just view it as license to unleash their inner asshole. Add to that the fact that it is very easy to let your frustrations get hold of you and send you off the deep end, and there will always be a fringe of weirdies. Which means the rest of us have to expend energy making sure they don't dominate the discourse when we could be out there fighting the good fight. It's got so people associate "feminism" with all kinds of ridiculous stuff: it's been turned into this caricature, and people engage with it as such.

I wish I knew what could be done about it. Heaven knows we've got better things to do than fighting the fringe, but this problem has been around since there were causes to rally round, and if someone's come up with a fix, they're sure keeping it to themselves.

Well, ESR has never been Mister Stable, but this is breaking bold new ground in silliness. The fact that he actually thinks this is a thing says a heck of a lot where his heads at, though, that's for sure.

Sad, really.

Jason Bourne disses James Bond

mmm, Potente....

<QUOTE>

I always felt Potente was a girl's girl, anyway, so I am available if she wants to drop by. Any Bond girl she wants to bring along will be OK by me, too, although I am too much of a lady to name those I'd prefer...

Hear hear! Don't need any misogysauruses lumbering about. I'm-a name names, though:

Miss MoneyPenny: Oh, come *on*. Poor thing's got to be the most fustrated girl in the UK. There is a cure.

Whatever character it was Grace Jones played in that one movie: Total butch goddess. I wouldn't last 20 minutes but what a way to go ^.^

How furry is it?

Kelly Luck

re: bad comparison

Gotta agree here. I'm in the wrong-gender category m'self (and latterly I can feel the too-fat one sneakin' up on me; alas the sedentary IT life), but I'm also a furry (by most people's definitions, anyway) but do not in the least consider myself to be the wrong species or anything like that.

For me (and, I think, most other furries), it's more a form of escapism, just a fun way to go off and be someone else once in a while (the SCA comparison is particularly apt). The 'animal self inside' people are, in my experience, a relatively small proportion of the fandom, and are more tied in with the folks who consider themselves to be really elves, vampires, etc, collectively known as Otherkin. Personally, that's a little too far out for me, but what the heck, who am I to judge?

Anyway, other than that, surprisingly good article. I think the differentiation between furries in general and the fur-suit subculture may have been clarified earlier on, but other than that, good to see someone getting their facts straight.

2012 Olympics logo debuts to whalesong

Oh, my...

Well, this is certainly...innovative. I agree with Patch Tuesday that it looks rather like a graffiti tag, though they do generally tend to be higher quality.

And how is this the 'heart of their vision'? Is their vision loud, and annoying? If this were a sound it would be a high-volume screech. This looks like the work of someone just out of design school, when they've got more youthful enthusiasm than experience and tend to overdo everything. Or perhaps this is their vision. Maybe this is going to be the Edgy Olympics.

Y'know, y'all can borrow Izzy (http://www.aldaver.com/Images/Os/masc1996.gif) if you like--we ain't usin' him.

US in The Long Good Friday remake outrage

Kelly Luck

This American...

...loved the original. Granted, I did find some of the thicker accents hard going, but once I got the hang of it, I was fine. Bob Hoskins was flat-out amazing. If they had any sense, they'd give the original a nice theatre run over here; I'm sure it'd do at least as well as this remake will do, if not better. Oh well, another one in the bargain bin next to the color 'Psycho' and all the others of their ilk.
