Work in the tech industry? The Ukraine WAR is coming to YOU

Re: Morals, ethics, principles...

"Shooting down airliners with long range missles SHOULD have resulted in FAR MORE than "Sanctions" against Russia. That's pretty damning evidence that can hardly be contraverted."

Much like the Vincennes shooting down that Iran Air airbus?

Anyone stand trial..over that.....or.anything?

Re: Morals, ethics, principles...

Kosovo.

Either you can change borders at the barrel of a gun or you can't. We did. So others can. You know it was a sh*t idea when even Kissinger thought it was.

& Now Kosovo is a NATO "protectorate"

Look even a map to show who's running what.

'Copyrighted' Java APIs deserve same protection as HARRY POTTER, Oracle tells court

SQL & OO

A) So Oracle are admitting to stealing SQL from IBM & given the value they have derived from that......the damages should be?

Were I an IBM lawyer I would be popping round to Larry's gaff.....

B) OO....extends..

* The method has a signature that is override-equivalent to that of

* any public method declared in {@linkplain Object}.

public @interface Override {

}

So that's dead then as Override depends on copying the API signature exactly....which is now copyright theft according to larry.

Android is a linux

& it rules the lower end (phone & increasingly tablet). Gnome's biggest problem is not MS not the kernel ppl but Android as there is a desktop done right.

You can tell this simply by the amount of fear Android generates in both MS & apple.

You can tell the fear MS have wrt tablets vs "the desktop" just by looking at windows 8.

The 1990'es are gone & the desktop (& PC) are 90'es ideas.

Oracle: 'Google owes $2.6bn in damages'

Adam 37

What scares Oracle is a desktop java that works

Gee a desktop linux+java combination which people actually want.....no wonder Oracle are worried...J2SE for running Tomcat etc......some sort of Davlik + Android apps for desktop stuff.....first J2ME is killed & then they come for Swing et al....

I have done (& am doing right now) Swing, SWT & Android & wrt UI apps.....I would choose android all the way.

Trident delay by the Coalition: Cunning plan, or bad idea?

Adam 37

Why not simply dock them

When things get politically warm send em to sea.

Else save the wear & tear with 3 or 4 dry docks.

Maybe keep one in the water but tied up.

I thought the whole point of Trident was to hit anywhere from anywhere which means hit anywhere from Scotland.

Royal Navy starts work on new, pointless frigates

Containerships

ISO containers full of "mission specific kit". e.g. need SAM's load a container of VL-Sams, Amphib ops...load that container etc.

A) All surface ships are targets for air & subsurface. Can a surface ship out run a SSN/MPA/FGA/Drone?

Heck a drone + a2a refueling may well have greater "persistence" than a frigate.

B) Crew should be as per commercial container-ships (20?) & then add the relevant "mission specialists" e.g. 100 marines if doing anti-piracy or a mix of marines & helo techs/pilots etc.

C) GIve it sufficient lifeboats as you have to assume.....all surface ships are expendable.

The reality of the light blue fascination with manned fga & the dark blue fascination with sleek & fast surface ships is that that's why they joined in the first place.

Royal Navy to get two carriers - but only one air group?

Adam 37

Page is living in the past

The reality is that F18'es are a complete waste of money as they're simply targets for most of the newer Russian kit. The testing they did wrt the teen series in general (15,16,18) vs late model Flankers & triple digit sams was not pretty.

In fact (in keeping with the IT bent of this place) the really nasty threats are that dear old linux etc is giving the really old SAM's a whole new lease of life. Pop out the old controller, pop in a new one built from a smartphone et voila bit's of fighter come down like leaves in Autumn.

& that's before the fact that passive radar works now that processors are cheap & powerful & we're all bathed in radiation from phone masts, FM transmitters, satellite TV etc.etc. Heck flying over a populated area with widespread wifi routers is a a stealth nightmare

Basically it's down to drones and airliners. Pilots don't like it because the airliners simply do racetracks a nice safe way back & provide refuelling for the drones, a nice comfy room with a view, and a signal repeating function for the drones.

The same is happening on the ground with the whole MLI (Modern Light Infantry) process i.e. man portable weaponry + a laptop & if you need transport use a 4x4 truck which can be cheaply sourced locally and is expendable vs damn great tanks & heavy kit in general. Even artillery can be sourced by rockets (including vertical launch containerized pods) or via drones.

At least the Taliban, Hezbollah et al have woken to this but then they have less budget for toys.

The F35 is the last hurrah of the fighter jock but at least the flat tops are by their nature....flat tops so will still find a use as an airbase.
