E3 2011: the showstoppers

"For now, though, the impetus is with 3DS, which will be awash with games in 2010."

Wow. I can't wait for 2010 then...

I believe that...

..Ancient Japanese Samurai wore silk undergarments as it was known that it made it much easier to remove arrows if you happened to get shot. The arrow head would get wrapped in the silk as you got hit and would therefore cause much less damage when pulled out. Also, because the silk was so strong compared to the other materials of the time, arrow heads tended not to go so deep.

If they had actually been available in 1996, then I think the world would be a lot more advanced by now. They were in fact 10 years later...

Pachter

Pachter is always in the games press commenting and making predictions about stuff. His analysis is almost always restricted to the tech and games industry and he's right about 85% of the time. He's got a pretty good hit rate, so he can hardly be described as "someone not in the know". He's just not as famous in Europe as he is in the US.

UK tech retailers are rubbish

PC World?

PC World are just as bad (obviously). I went in a couple of weeks ago looking for a new monitor as I was fed up with the two small ones that I had hooked up. I thought i'd stroll in and pick up a nice big 28" one or something. After looking around for a bit I finally grabbed an 'assistant', only to be told "I'm sorry, we don't sell monitors"... Excuse me? I thought I was in PC World there for a minute, I must have misread the sign on the way in...

Online hotel bookings to be probed for price-fixing

Rob 9

Not online that's the problems

My mum recently had a hotel ring her up to cancel my mum and dad's holiday booking at the last minute because they'd decided to refurbish instead. But never fear! Here, have a voucher for a 30% discount next time you book with us...

So my mum checks online 3 months later (having rearranged their holiday plans) and see's it's 50 quid a night. Excellent she thinks, I can have 3 nights for 100 quid. So because she can't use the voucher online as it came direct from the hotel, she rings up and tries to book. "Ok, for three nights that's...159 quid please" says the woman.. My mum explained that she had a voucher and the hotelier told her that the price included the 30% discount. When my mum queried how that was mathematically possible the only response was that "They do deals online sometimes..."

Mum told them to get stuffed, i'm never booking with you again - you're incompetent and tried to forget about it, but they're now being hounded by head office trying to get a statement for "An internal investigation..."

Spooky.

Harrow flicks pirate thrown in slammer

Rob 9

yes.. for breaking the law.

I have no problem with this at all and I don't see how you possibly could either. Regardless of what you think of pirating movies harming/not harming the movie companies, this is definitely harming Vue as it could potentially stop people going to the cinema to watch those films and if they aren't active in combatting piracy, the film companies might not sell them the films to show in the first place harming them further.

Pirates are scum. End of.

Blizzard issues fatwa against Starcraft II cheaters

Rob 9

I thought...

"Except with star craft 2 you don't pay for online subscription, you actually rent it with a one off payment. You certainly don't own it.

You cannot play the game at all unless logged in, which is a pain as so far I have had two days where it can't find the server because it is busy, so I can't play the game I own."

I thought you just said you don't own it?

As for the original issue, if people are logging into Blizzard's servers, Blizzard have every right to ban people under whatever circumstances they feel appropriate.

Firefox, uTorrent, and PowerPoint hit by Windows DLL bug

Rob 9
Thumb Up

Tittle?

The whole point behind the way windows originally loaded it's dll's was so that you didn't have a million different versions of the same thing on your machine at once and everyone was supposed to just use the 'latest' one. Then people complained about the fact that their apps only ran with specific versions of the dll and that legacy apps couldn't always be updated to go with the new versions of dlls released by other people so they made it so you could include the specific ones in your program directory and windows would look there first.

It's a simple case of it not being very well thought out in the first place and badly stuck together with card and bits of string ever since.

Kat Arney

Kat is also one of the Naked Scientists (www.thenakedscientists.com) and a very clever lady. I listen to their podcast every week (it comes out of Cambridge Uni) and it is always entertaining and informative. The most entertaining part is listening to them stumble around the pronunciation of the American Medical Journal P.N.A.S.

The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.

>>>>You say potAYto, I say PotAHtoe. You say joke I say bomb threat. Normal people don't go around threatening to blow things up, and when they do as jokes they use more joking terms like "someone should blow them the fuck up" or "the service would be better if they were a pile of glowing radioactive slag"

So how is that any different to what he actually said??

I would actually read "someone should blow them the fuck up" as more threatening than what he actually said.... I reckon you've got about a week before the police turn up on your doorstep and arrest you for incitement...

If you were legit you'd know that you can install to the HDD with the latest dashboard. Sure, you have to still have the disk in the drive to start the game but the entire thing then runs from HDD. Don't be so fricken lazy and give game developers what you owe them.

Nokia sues Apple over iPhone

Rob 9

Well, yes there is...

Putonghua73 : "Is there a legal basis for classifying standards as intellectual propety? Any design / product based upon such standards, yes - but the actual standards themselves?"

BetaMax, VHS, CD's, DVD's BluRay.

They're all 'standards' used by many different companies but certain others hold the development rights to them. For many many years people and companies had to pay (Panasonic?) a royalty if you wanted to produce a CD or CD player. Don't know what the situation with that tech is now but i'm sure the legality of it remains.
