Subcontractors working on CityFibre's £45m Derby rollout threaten to 'rip up tarmac' in dispute over payments

Re: Rip it up and start again.

I have just given notice to Virgin. You have to "go all the way" with Virgin and give notice.

And then they phone you up and offer a better price, first coming down to around £40 from current £55, and then eventually down to £24 a month, matching Now.

It seems they must be bleeding customers.

You ever sat next to a waterfall, or even a weir? Quite soothing and relaxing. Even Kaieteur falls.

Waterfall _has_ to be less stressful than Agile, the planning is done up front, and you know where you are with the timescales, deliverables, milestones etc.

Re choosing passwords, I find it amusing that the companies that ban you using parts of your own name or login ID, don't ban their own company name. Which makes the password easy to remember: company name plus check digit plus shift check digit.

Same here, but I'm NOT in a rural setting, so people passing the house can use it any time.

Another thing worth pointing out is if you use bittorrent for copyrighted material, turn off the upload option for those files. If you need to build up 'points' then share stuff like open source software only.

THat was you can't even be (rightly) accused of sharing the copyrighted stuff.

Re: Good, but more

On top of that there are companies that use open source software, which they (grudgingly) publish.

But you can't recompile it yourself and run it on the device - oh no!

As the device bootloader is signed and the key is blown into fuses on the CPU, and the application must be signed too for the bootloader to run it.

So - you can build the app, but you can't sign it (with the manufacturer key) and therefore you can't run it.

None of which of course is in the spirit of the open source license the company is taking advantage of!

A while back I was contracting at TTPCom-Motorola, and this is the complete opposite of Allesandro's story.

Motorola had installed their corporate HR web-clickable database on the internal network, so you could click around and see who worked for whom.

So out of interest I clicked on my boss, then his boss, etc etc until I reached Ed Zander at the top.

It took 11 clicks - so that's 12 levels in the organisation, from the top, down to me, who did the actual work! It wasn't hard to see where this was heading.....
