Amazon Key door-entry flaw: No easy fix to stop rogue couriers burgling your place unseen

Stoneshop
FAIL

Re: Wait, the door doesn't re-lock until it's instructed to?

And anyone who actually knows what they are talking about will tell you that the average system has a 2Ah battery

It's you who doesn't know what they are talking about; the most common SLA battery used for burglar/fire alarms is 7Ah. So you're looking at several days before the battery is exhausted, and usually they'll signal in some way that the battery is running low.

Stoneshop

Re: Wait, the door doesn't re-lock until it's instructed to?

Except the camera would see you doing this...

Which has been kicked off the network by the Deauth flood, and it will be nicked or smashed to bits as the burglar knows how to go about in a case like this.

Stoneshop
Thumb Up

"Maybe because it's out of reach."

Wait! Are you suggesting the easiest way to deter thieves is simply to put things up high where they can't reach them?

You'll also have to put stepladders and chairs and such high up where they're out of reach. And sturdy boxes. Crates. And cupboards that might be moved. Which you'll then need a stepladder for to get things in or out of. And as the stepladder is stored out of reach you'll have to get a new one (from Amazon?) which you afterwards need to store out of reach again. I see this being a recursive problem without an, eh, bottoming-out condition, and you'll sooner or later reach the Stepladder Event Horizon.

One positive aspect is that it will cause a surge in membership of the Society for Putting Things on top of Other Things.

Yeah and pigs might fly someday.

A couple of JATO rockets, a set of wings and a bunch of ty-raps would do the trick I'd think.

Knowing where the flight will end is a matter of plugging the right numbers into some formulas, which will at least tell you the area to keep out of.

Tesla launches electric truck it guarantees won't break for a million miles

Stoneshop

Re: Tesla semi?

Good thing that truck drivers own their own personal trailer and never tow anyone else's. Or a flat bed.

If this really takes off I can see solar roof panels being retrofitted to trailers, or panel modules that can be attached on top of a shipping container in case the trailer is towed by an electric truck. And if shipping companies have a mixed fleet of solar and non-solar trailers, they can load the solar one if it's Jones The Electric Trucker who's coming to take the trailer to its destination.

Tayto smoky bacon crisps are kosher and meat free.

A pretty good vegetarian substitute for fried bacon cubes: dice a block of smoked tofu, put them in a hot skillet with a bit of oil, then after they're about halfway fried, add vegetable stock (quantity needs to be experimented with a bit, depending on the desired result). Keep the heat on until the stock has been absorbed into the cubes and the water evaporated, then fry until target crispiness achieved.

Well, when that iPhone has the access code to the remote-controlled front door to the $1.000.000 house[0] that that Range Rover is parked in[1], those $150 and a few hours of 3D-printing and tweaking sounds like a worthwhile investment.

Re: passthrough PSUs

If your PC has a passthrough socket for the monitor, there's additional earth leakage current for the system, but no change in the limit.

That RCD is somewhere in the central fuse box, monitoring the entire circuit that it's wired into. So unless you have your monitor and PC on separate circuits, having the monitor on a pass-through socket from the PC, or just plugged into adjacent sockets (or an extension strip) will make sod-all difference.

I remember PDAs with 64K static RAM based CF cards using coin cell for backup before Flash was available. Mid 1980s.

There's one of those in the Casio?/Sharp? (it's elsewhere, so can't check) handheld I found at a thrift shop recently.

Is the smallest the IBM PC type Clock/RAM chip on some portable gadgets in late 1980s with 64 bytes RAM kept alive by a coin cell (5 years)?

Not as small regarding storage, but I have a 2k SRAM chip that's got two recesses for coin cells (CR1220 IIRC) in the casing.

Stoneshop

Re: I'm confused

What the US ballot needs is a "none of the above" as a choice for president.

I would like, in general, a preference voting system where you can vote for or against candidates, and you have a number of points to assign as you see fit. So, with 20 points as an example:

Fairly Sensible Boring Candidate: +1

Not Just No But Fucking Hell No Candidate: -9

Monster Raving Looney Candidate: +12

Re: Perspective

More than $3bn spent by both main candidates and the lies published by them and their supporters had absolutely no effect on the electorate, but $100,000 of Russian ads totally swayed it.

You're ignoring two rather influential factors: swing districts, and the electoral college.

With proportional representation, those 6 million roubles would have gone nowhere indeed.

Ads are 'user-created content'?

"Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) asked: "Why should you be treated any differently to the press?" All three California outfits responded with a version of the fact that they are "platforms" and not publishers, that their content is user-created, and that they protect people's right to free speech and expression. "

As far as I'm concerned, online ads (whether delivered from one's own servers or from an ad farm's) should be subject to the same rules as print ads instead of generic user-created content (which is what they appear to be saying here), and even high school newspapers vet the ads they want to place.

But ads are what brings in the money for FB/Twitter/Google, so they're not going to be looking at them beyond the bare minimum required by advertising standards.

And even that one, while rocket-powered, had wings. Sufficiently so to allow gliding back to earth once the fuel had run out; not having them would result in the flight characteristics of a streamlined brick.

Given the aerodynamics necessary, trying it "in reverse" would probably be entertaining but not productive.

In the late 1970's there was a Dutch TV programme with the 'racing in reverse' theme. Given the abundance of cheap, to-be-scrapped, Daf cars[0] back then, there was ample fodder for those races. Some of them are on YouTube ("achteruitrij race"), so you can judge the 'entertaining' bit for yourself.

[0] with their jarretelle drive[1] they could theoretically go as fast in reverse as forward. It's just that steering behaviour spoils things a bit, unless you don't care much for rolling your car.

Exactly. This past July. Three months ago, so entirely appropriate for couriers to give out for a pickup appointment.

Stoneshop

Re: nicking the previous delivery

Do you often have multiple deliveries on the same day at different times?

Yes. Not often, but they happen. Sometimes it's like buses: you wait ages for some package from China to show up, then three arrive the same day (all by different couriers, obviously).

Stoneshop

Re: I must be in the "Beta" programme

the amount of delivery people who thought a bin was a good place to store stuff,

This calls for a SmartBinTM (Internet of Trash?), able to sense non-trash being deposited and, depending on the feature level, just refuses to be emptied into the garbage truck (Bronze), rolls back into the yard away from the Designated Bin Pickup Spot (Silver), or, at the Gold Level, moves into the yard, signals a robot arm to extract the package, then moves back to allow the remaining contents to be collected by the council.
