Apple's iPad Mini mishap: scratching out the retina screen

Ian Watkinson

Re: I agree, the lack of a retina screen is crazy...

I'm actually suprised it even got the lightning connector, except that makes apple money.

Lets be clear.

A retina A6X 16/32/64GB Mini, about £30-40 more expensive than a kindle or Nexus is what everyone expected/wanted.

So wait for the Ipad Mini 3.

Which given the update to the Ipad (Retina) should be along in about 6 months time...

Yes Really.

How's Iplayer work on your Nexus on your planet?

How about Flash?

At £159 the google nexus is a steal. At £50 less than a "proper" ipad, for thr 7" version, why one would anyone bother?

Great Device, Great OS. shame about the Apps and the App store

I love my Nexus 7, I loved the voucher I got to use with it.

I hate the Play Store.

I hate the Amazon store a little less as it gives me a free app a day, and some of them even work.

However many of the Apps look terrible on the Nexus 7, and I can only assume even worse on 10" tablets.

Plus many many many of them, just don't work.

BBC Iplayer anyone? Nope..

Flash, nope.

Skype..sort of.

Notespark - no app.

1Password - only reader.

PvZ HD..nope only Standard Def here...

And that's not counting the ones that install crap on the device, and try and get you to buy more stuff by popping things up. Makes smurfberries on iOS look tame.

Re: Never seen

Not sure it's a better product, it's a cheaper and more portable product. Better for what, watching movies on, nope I'll choose Ipad 3, taking on the tube...nexus 7...

Ian Watkinson
Thumb Up

Re: Never seen

Maybe because people assume they are kindles?

I've been asked several times how I find my kindle, to end up telling them it isn't it's a Nexus 7.

But in a small 7" case, it looks like like all the kindle keyboard/touches/etc out there, as it's too small to be an ipad, therefore must be a kindle.

Thing is, prior to the nexus 7, there were no decent non-ipad tablets at a decent price. With the nexus 7, and Kindle Fire HD, and the Nook HD, there will be 3.

I tried once before a £129 android tablet, that went back 4 days later, being slow, unresponsive and with a crap screen.

Before people say Galaxy tab 10, I'll point out, same price nearly as an ipad, not better, so why bother (along the adage of when releasing new devices either be twice as good, or half the price the tab 10 wasn't either)

Free but for $99.99 worth of crapberries

Trouble is they've run out of gullible fools who are prepared to spend real money on a virtual game, just to speed things up.

Apple has closed the "it was my kid" loophole. Google the same, even WOW with it's once fanatical base of fans is having trouble convincing people to pay for a game, and then pay again next month, and the month after.

The only one that seems to be holding it's own, is xbox live, but perhaps that's because the price makes the online part work for a number of games.

Re: Why not buy a much better Samsug Galaxy S3 today?

Agree completely, they should make all the apps for the 4.3" screen or a 10.1" screen, that android has, and leave it at Gingerbread 2.3, that way you could make them all work.

What do you mean android has more than 2 screen sizes, does that mean all stuff works? Nope..oh.

But 80% of android users will be on the latest os won't they, so we can just make everything for buttery jelly can't we?

Well that's settled, everything made for 2 screens, and only works on Butter jelly and you'll be fine.

Other than that, you could split it by OS, from froyo to JB, and then by device resolution, and then you'll see why devs take on IOS first.

Do it for the last ios, in this case 6, do a normal and a hd version (iphone 5 users can get stuffed) and 85% of your users are happy..

Show's 66% of users, others show 80%.

are 66% of Android users on vanilla JB yet?

or get a full-fat smart phone for less money - t-mobile vivacity

S40, wow, so last decade.

If I can buy a t-mobile vivacity, unlock it, and get a 5mp camera, better screen and better apps, for half the price, then how can you possibly say "the Asha 311 has much to appreciate. It’s cheap," It's not even that.

You've already done a <£100 android test which has several phones that beat the pants off this.

If I want cheap for the "but as a backup or travel phone or your young’uns first handset" I want it either sub £30, or rugged and water proof.

This is neither, You can pick up loads of S60 and S40 phones cheap on ebay, why...simple nobody wants them, there are better phones about now.

If you really want a backup emergency phone, then I'd take a 6210, which has days of talk time, and weeks of standby!

Google Nexus 7 Android tablet

Ian Watkinson
WTF?

Admittedly, the Nexus 7 needs a 3G version for true data portability, an absence

Oh no, you mean for some reason I can't link it to my smartphone and share it's data connection, oh woe is me.

Perhaps it then does need 3g, as opposed to noone really needing it if they can tether it (or someeone else is paying the data charges)

PS3-Xbox 360 (Why blu-ray when you can have 1080p digital media?)

Sony Amp, Vs Onkyo amps, cheaper with rae reviews.

Ikleen vs Roomba, Roomba gets the rave reviews, and can be picked up for nearly 100 less than the ikleen, plus has a 30 day, I'm not happy send it back guarantee, that the ikleen doesn't....

Perhaps we should just list...top 10 things I can see from my desk.

Re: Great deal, it's not a Kindle

Having less books available from 4 places doesn't mean that it's 4x more.

There's also the fact that B&N don't sell here.

In compliance with shipping regulations, some item(s) in your order cannot be sent to London in United Kingdom.

The key thing to look for is price.

Most of the time when I've looked the ebook from amazon is £2-£3 cheaper than it's epub equivalent.

Really, you have to ask that question? Text messages for one. Sure for email, it's probably just as easy to go to another mail app and type in a response, but if you deal with a lot of text messages, then typing on a big keyboard is great. I used to do it with an app on the old Sony Ericsson P9x series, and it was great. Also good if you don't have access to your email other than on the phone (no web access secure proxy etc) as you can then type long email as well.

You mean like the two bookeen opus's I bought my kids, £50 each, weighs less than a kindle, (ok it's a 5" screen, but most of their books are smaller anyway.

The opus's also read txt files as well, although not rtf's. Why not RTFs? well probably the same reason as they don't read .doc and .docx

The Rich Text Format (often abbreviated RTF) is a proprietary document file format with published specification developed by Microsoft Corporation since 1987 for Microsoft products and for cross-platform document interchange.

Both devices loaded with over 500mb of books, should keep them quiet for a while!

"proper console games"...

on a handheld..keep on drinking that sony cool-aid.

I had a psp, I really wanted there to be a decent game for it. There wasn't.

It was ok for watching videos on, a duty it's still ok at.

I suspect you've never played any of the better ios games.

Plus you seem to think that an ipod is a phone? Perhaps that's why you're confusing vita with a console.

Sony lost the console war to microsoft, ps3 lost to the xbox 360, their network was so bad, people prefer to pay microsoft than use it.

They've lost the handheld war to apple and nintendo, they just don't seem to realise it yet.

Ian Watkinson
FAIL

So wonder how well it plays music, as good as an ipod touch? It's going to have to play games much much better than the touch, otherwise I can't see this getting off the ground.

Games for touch up to £7 most £1. Console Cost £199

Games for Vita most £32 Console £219

So given that it's not half the price, it better be twice as good...

Battery also hammered

Down from 2 months, to one.

However back in the real world, that means if you've got wireless turned on, to get your newspapers web sites etc put on it by calibre, then that's down from a little over a week to what, 3 days? Plus, where is the 3g version for those that don't have wireless? Quite a few people are happy with wired at home, and using the cable but might want the convenience of 3g when they want it. In short, cheap yes, but an improvement no..

Ten... Androids to outshine the iPhone 4S

Ian Watkinson

LOL,

@Bilboroberts Andrew, have you tried a soft reset?

So we're in the have you turned it on and off again support mode? :-)

Must rush out and buy an android phone...

Ian Watkinson

Clueless, if you think that the difference between a boxster and a 911 is 40-50k esp second hand then dream on.

Besides, £100 or £50k, you can still appear to be cheap.

Ian Watkinson

how have I wasted the money on a phone, it does what I want it to do, cheaper than a

1/ dedicated gps

2/ Mp3 player

3/ tablet

4/ video player

5/ ebook reader (although I do confess to having a kindle..)

So where is the waste?

Ian Watkinson
Devil

@AC 911 vs Boxster

Except in the case of the 911 vs Boxster, the view was buy a 2 year old 911, it was (and probably still is) a better/cheaper bet than a new Boxster.

Ian Watkinson
Stop

Trouble is...

The OS and support is sh1te.

I tried an HTC desire before I went iphone.

Had an issue, went to Vodafone, speak to HTC, HTC, not us google, google said, we don't support it except via groups...

Compare that, to one call to Apple.

Android could make me a coffee in the morning, run me a shower, warm the car up and drive me to work, but until they fix the broken support model, it's always going to be second place behind a unified support model with everyone pointing the other way, I want to like android, I really do but when it doesn't work, then someone needs to step up. At the moment the networks, manufactureres and google won't. So comparing one closed phone OS with another, I'll go with the one with the best support.

Plus there is the small factor of it suffering from the Porsche Boxster Syndrome, it's ok but everyone knew you had it because you were too cheap to buy a 911, Android everyone knows that the only reason you bought one, was you were too cheap to buy an Iphone....

What's not in the iPhone 4S ... and why

Ian Watkinson
WTF?

£3 vs £499

Yeah, because I'd much rather whip out my £499 phone and tap it on a terminal, than my free (credit card) or £3 oyster card.

NFC for phones, brought to you by the same people that think putting ages old IR technology in the iphone so that you can spend 5 minutes unlocking your phone and running an app, is better than pressing a button on a TV remote...

I'm sure Apple users are happy with Leopard and Snow Leopard but I just can't see how it's any better than Kubuntu Jaunty.

Real basic things like it works?

Try doing something basic like network sharing on Jaunty. I've just plugged my laptop into the hotel wired broadband, I want to share this with my colleagues on my wifi.

Windows Can.

OSX Can.

Linux can't. At least not easily, and no hacking routes and firewall configs doesn't count as easy.

iPhone demand in the UK is 'soft', survey finds

Ian Watkinson

and 9/10 cats said

that they'd never heard of the Survey.

Most of the people I speak to who've got smart phones are interested in the iphone.

Most of the people that will spend £200+ on an upgrade are interested in the iphone.

Will they switch networks?

Depends.

On what you might ask, well if it's to 02 or T-mobile, and there is a good data tariff included then yes. Lots seem reluctant to move to Orange, and only one said they'd move to 3 (I know I know it's not 3g for the US, however, how difficult would be a) to do and b) to do and one more thing type announcement...)

Plus compare the Treo or the P990 costs in the US to the costs in the UK, and I can see the Iphone being £250 for the 8mb one for the first 3 months and then moving downwards.

I suspect that apple will do some sort of refresh deal to avoid the iphone going the fate of the razr and going from hot $$ phone to every chav's freebie phone.
