Videogames caused riots says plod

Dr Insanity

<Insert Title Here>

It was only a matter of time before someone played the "blame it on the video games" card. Yet again noone seems to blame the idiotic fools buying the age restricted titles for the "kids" now running with gangs and causing the riots... If you're not mature enough to tell the difference between real life and a game, stop playing the game!

Need for Speed doesn't make me drive like a loon, Tekken doesn't make me think I know Kung Fu, Championship Manager doesn't make me think I could run the Saints...

Waving my hand at the traffic lights and them turning green does make me think I'm a Jedi, however.

Life is not just a game with better graphics and shoddy respawn points

Why not

Why not put all the petitions onto facebook? if you get over 1 million likes then it goes to parliament for discussion, and you can name your firstborn son Megatron!

uddle...?

Surely the component unit for fullox should be a fullocy in itself... perhaps a portmanteau of utter twaddle... Uddle? the fact it sounds like part of bovine anatomy only helps in my eyes.

Philips G7000

Pretty sure I had a Philips cartridge based console... quick google search and the one that looks like it is a Videopak G7000

@Micky1 - saw both a Master System and a Master System II in there under 3rd gen, with the atari 7800, Amstrad GX4000 and the NES - big question is, did he have the Sonic one, or the Alex Kidd one? Alex Kidd FTW!

I had one of those silver Galaxy boxes from his tabletop set, awesome game!

Creationists are infiltrating US geology circles

Dr Insanity

@david Lawrence

The trouble with using dinosaurs as a disproof of creationism and intelligent design is faith. When God created earth he put the fossilised remains of dinosaurs and the like underground to be discovered as a test of faith. The faithful will see the remains as a trial and still believe in their devine creation, the unfaithful will see the fossils as proof of an era long gone where giant lizards roamed the earth before it was meant to have been created.

It's a way of explaining away any "missing links" in evolution too; anything discovered as before the missing link is clearly a test of faith from our Creator, and anything post missing link is as planned by His divine will.

I personally am yet to be convinced either way. I don't subscribe to any organised religion but at the same time I am open to the concept of a higher power in the universe. It's not impossible that we were indeed put here by a higher power, or that perhaps our evolution was encouraged to a points of intelligent design.

From the bible persepective, it's possible that one of God's 7 "days" is an epoch to us mortals, and that the day between him creating sea creatures and beast was infact the evolution of fish through amphibians to mammals, and the creating of light on day 1 could be likened to the big bang? that being the case, and bearing in mind the timescales involved being millions/billions of years, it is plausibly still God's sabbath, and God is still resting.

proof of the pudding

This just shows how similar the logos are, from your descriptions even you have managed to muddle them. The SE logo is the 3d design, where the CW is the flat one with the spiral.

I'd agree with Doc Spock that Ocado probably have a bigger case against CW for the similarity, but I don't think CW are heading into the home groceries business any time soon....

So, what's the best sci-fi film never made?

Dr Insanity

does it have to be the best movie never made?

how about the best series never made? Would have to be Firefly season 2, or Firefly season 3... Maybe Firefly season 4? Can anyone else see where I might be going with this?

Seriously though, '48 by James Herbert could make for a fun Sci-Fi/Thriller/Horror type movie

Red Dwarf to blast off on new adventure

Dr Insanity

I'm with A. Lewis

Doug is still a great writer, but when Rob Grant left the team something was lost. They tried too much to make big jokes of entire episodes, losing a lot of the little quirks and witticisms which made Red Dwarf Great - Tshirts telling us to Give Quiche a Chance, playing pool with planets, Triple fried egg, chilli, chutney sandwiches - you just don't get touches like that in the later series

Nanotech nerds assemble überfast-charge battery

Dr Insanity

true... but

while I agree that this would be dangerous if just left to a simple twin+earth plug, with proper safety precautions kept in mind I don't see how this is any worse than we do now.

Perhaps a locking mechanism which won't allow the "pump" to be powered on until the plug is locked in place, and won't allow the plug to be removed until the pump is powered down again, similar to the Gas pumps used for LPG, at no point will anyone be at risk from electrocution.

Alternatively the batteries could be charged in parrallel. Instead of a single cable charging at thousands of amps, several cables could be used each charging at hundreds of amps. The more cables, the less amperage required down each one.

It's no worse than a hose-ful of highly flammable liquid/gas - if done well it could even be safer!

I'm sure someone more intelligent than I will work out a way of making money putting this tech into cars!

Dr Insanity

EV tech

How easy would it be to increase the capacity of the batteries to the point where they would be useable in EVs?

The biggest stepping stone with vehicles seems to be the amount of time it takes to charge vs filling a liquid fuel tank. if these batteries charge to 90% in a couple of minutes, take that to EV level and you'd be able to fully charge your car while parked up for an hour doing the shopping...

Google demotes BeatThatQuote one day after buying it

Dr Insanity

Newsworthy?

Surely by doing something as controversial as temporarily banning one of their own sites, it will encourage people to report on the issue, thus providing new links and buzz about the site, allowing them to legitimately climb the ladder of the googorithm?

HP whips out iPad challenger Windows 7 fondle-slab

Dr Insanity

Tablet, slab or slate

My biggest problem with the iPad and the concurrent influx of me-too devices, be they Windows, Linux, iOS, webOS or otherwise, is that I no longer know what to call the original tablet form factor:

As I understood it, laptops with a swivel touchscreen, a-la the previously mentioned tm2 are called tablets...

What do I call them now when I want to scour the internet to buy one? I do a search on Tablets and get all sorts of results for slates, slabs, pads and their ilk.

Can we stick with the pad/slate naming convention for non-keyboarded machines? Or if we do insist on calling them tablets, can we call those with a keyboard and swivel screen a convertable? I'd just like to know where I stand!

Of course this doesn't help the dell stream with it's sub-slate come oversize phone form factor... we need a new name for these ones too, perhaps sub-palmoid 7-slatetop-touch-book-padlet?

Can't wait for HP to bring one of these out in the 5" form factor with GSM a-la stream.... would be perfect!

and then you have the users who, instead of calling up when a problem first occurs, they have a go themselves - oft making the problem worst, or even causing irreparable damage.

And on the occasion they do actually sort the problem out, forget to tell anyone (he says, following a 10 minute walk in the rain to un-jam a printer that some helpful soul has already unjammed for me)
