first job

partially entailed doing ops on a room full of Vaxen. 780, 2x785, 8600, some microvax, lots of drives.

one day when changing a tape over thought 'feels a bit warm behind the 8600' so go and tell the ops manager. we go in, agree it feels a bit warm. go out and look at the aircon control panel. in those days it wasnt a nice lcd panel, it was a grey metal box with panel lights and a power switch. None of the 'unit failed' lights were on. there were 3 units running the area.

still we are coming out of winter and again a week later i'm thinking 'this is too hot, can't be right'. tell the ops manager, we do the same thing again.

then a fortnight later it was early may and the first lovely warm day of the year. I'm in a diferent building and cant seem to log on to anything in the cluster. rush over to the computer room to see all the loading doors open and people wafting air in. The aircon had failed. the console printers were going mad. as a vaxcluster everything major that happened came out on all the printers. but the heat was affecting the connection and the machines were dropping out, causing all the machines to report on the status not just what it saw, but the status that the other machines in the clusters saw as well, so paper was just churning out.

eventually they took the decision to just turn the power off as they couldnt regain control for an orderly shutdown. not good.

when the aircon engineer turned up, it turned out due to a blown fuse in the control panel, the 'unit failed' lamps were not working. to the best of his knowlege he reckoned we were working on 2 units most of the winter, one failed a month ago (when i noticed it getting warmer) and the last one failed that day when it struggled in the heat.

the aircon panel was re-wired so instead of 'unit failed' lamps we had 'unit running' lamps. If the lamp was off we had a problem - or a blown bulb!

thing to be learned is if you've got a hunch there is a problem, don't trust your instrumentation.

i have fun with them

i used to get annoyed and shout at them, now if i've got time to spare I just try to freak them out. ask them their name, where they live, what they are wearing etc... just go hog wild. pretend you're masturbating or even masturbating somebody else. pull up a streaming porn site and play that in the background and describe whats happening.

i want these assholes to go to bed at night and not get that image out of their heads, contemplating doing something useful with their lives.

much more fun than getting angry and reporting them which (in my experience) has done f all to stop them.

ive personally not voted for a long time. firstly because I was living in such a safe seat it would make no difference, and then after labour was returned for the final time, I gave up. the general public are too stupid to understand the choices they are making either through pure dimness or being totally stuck in a polarised world that cannot accept that another party might have better ideas, stuck shouting 'toff' or 'red' at each other.

i will say one thing though, on facebook, the only people i know who have joined the 'brand for prime minister' type groups and share his updates are the *thickest* people I know.

YouTube co-founder either HATES Google+ or his vid account just got HACKED

The Mighty Spang

totally agree

I had a G+ account attached to my google apps for domains account. Only used it to keep up with the statuses of the Dart team (as only about 3 people I know are on G+)

i started getting messages on youtube about do I want to use my real name? no I don't. a week later, same thing. ignored. then it seemed to get to the point that I couldn't do anything, even view videos without this same old shit happening. either use your real name or create a g+ channel for your login. feck off I don't want either. so I deleted my g+ account, telling them why.

just checked. although my youtube account works, when i clicked to add a comment it went back to "if you do this you will have to create a g+ channel with your name". i clicked no, message at top of screen goes "OK, we'll ask you again later".

totally fusking bizarrely I just uploaded a video and made it public and it didnt ask me about creating a google+ channel.

contrary to popular belief I do add useful comments at times :) though this whole g+ channel thing means i'm not posting comments on youtube anymore. screw it, really not worth it. but people will just click ok because they are idiots.

bit like the thing going round FB at the moment, the 'whats your brain age' test where you have to agree for them to be able to see all your contacts and all your posts etc. and people still click ok.

Re: Idiots

even after spending the better amount of £5k on kit from ebay on my barclaycard in the last 18 months without so much of a twitch, the other day, whilst in the middle of paying an import duty to UPSon the phone I was called by barclaycard.

apparantly my spending pattern had flagged up suspicious activity. that week i had spend £3.24 on a cheap game on steam and paid £50 odd to UPS.

after i rang back the message (as i was still on the fecking line to ups at the time) it said something like 'hi we're barclaycard and we hate you. we think you're doing something dodgy, so please call us back on this number you've never seen before in your life and doesn't match the number on the back of your card. just to prove we aren't some fly by night shyster, log into your mybarclaycard account online and there will be a message in there to prove this is legit. i'd just like to remind you we're regulated by the financial service authority but we still hate you. later looser!'

so i log into mybarclaycard and... lo and behold.... NO MESSAGE. quell suprise! so phone on normal line. listen to barney harwood from radio 4 talking me through typing my number in and shit. get through to confused of india #1. talk talk talk talk. ok putting your though to fraud now... wait wait wait wait...get to go through the same fusking questions again and get to talk to confusied of india #2. i get the spanish inquisition. what was the £50 you just spent for? I'm sorry that's none of your fucking business. OK, what I meant was, this transaction with UPS, what kind of service do they provide? UPS? biggest delivery company in the world? WTF do you think its for? OK thank you sir. This payment of £3.24 to Steam Games what was that for? a game. oh, maybe it was weapons grade nuclear material. no i paid for that on my other card so definately a crappy cheap game. mumble mumble... type..type.... I see you reset your access code 2 weeks ago. was it you who did that? yes. why was that? because i forgot it. ok... (is this the bit where you go 'because i'm a master criminal and i've stolen this blokes identity')... eventually after like 20 mins on the phone this evil witch said 'is there anything I can help you with today'...

First look: iOS 7 for iPad

The Mighty Spang

yet again, more fiddling with nothing

... as the version number changes.

lets get this straight. for 99% of stuff, changes to 'THE OS' don't matter. the os is different to the UI. most changes to the UI are fiddling in the corners (unless you do a windows 8 in one step).

i bought my ipad 2 a good few years ago and keep it up to date. what have i noticed change? nothing. im using app and that hasn't changed. like new versions of OSX. over 200 improvement they trumpet. all i can see is a few things missing from the right hand side of finder and an increased load time because i forgot to turn off the numpty "restart all the applications i previously had open" option. oh and 'foldermege' which windows has done since version 1 and doesn't mean the unwary loose data because they expected it to work in a logical way.

they poo-poo android for all these versions, but i got an old motorola atrix phone out my drawer and gave it to a friend. yeah it worked, some stuff was in diffrent places, but what have i gained to my galaxy S3 with its newer OS? erm, nothing.its mainly a phone and an app is an app.

drives me nuts when people go 'oh the apple OS is so much better' then you find out all they do is run a browser (mozilla) and adobe apps, so their total expsoure to the 'OS' is explorer. or the file save dialog.

re: patents and licencing on camera

really interesting and often missed thing is if you are using something like a canon 5dmk2 or even panasonic eng cameras like 151 and 371 (and all others i would imagine, those are just ones where i've looked the manual) and filming with h264 or avc.

you are ***NOT*** licenced to use the recording for commercial work.

unfort i can't seem to copy and paste out of the pdfs, so check 5d2 english manual pg 241 - "about mpeg-4 licencing' or the panny hpx-370 manual pg 6.

Re: New Order.

you might be getting confused with Factory Record's co-founder and producer for all their early work. Martin 'Zero' Hannet. He petitioned for FCL to be wound up as basically he wanted to buy a Fairlight. (and basically all the money FCL had was money from Joy Division)

'Anthony Wilson has cited Factory's refusal to purchase a Fairlight synthesizer for Hannett [for £30,000], and to instead earmark £50,000 toward The Hacienda (FAC 51) as Hannett's main reason for taking legal action against FCL.'

Eurozone crisis hits pay TV: Punters pick broadband over telly

The Mighty Spang
Thumb Down

pay tv? why would anybody do that

and not just because of pirating, but after you pay for it, there are adverts every 10 mins. and then they stick crap on the screens when you are watching it.

for example i'm watching season 2 of falling skies (yes dodgily I know. apart from bbc4 on iplayer that is pretty much about it). I can barely do that for the giant bright logo in the bottom corner (excellent for a show that mainly takes place in the dark) and giant pop up adverts for other shows that appear. Even if I had no other opertunity to get that content without paying, with ads and logos and crap im not paying. i dont pay to watch a f*cking advert and its only because there are so many dullards with nothing to do (they think) except watch tv there is never going to be enough of a rebellion of people cancelling off short of mass piracy.

economics of everything to do with this stuff is screwed up now. single tv show buying costs are too high compared say taking a subscription out. well i dont want a subscription so your show price is too high compared to other stuff i can do with my life.

production costs have escalated because of indy production companies owning the talent and 'the talent' will only work through the production company (who are their agents and managers etc) who then overcharge for production and take a nice slice out of every level of a programmes budget. the bbc was broken up to give more stuff to indys many years ago to take the power out of the beeb and keep costs low, unfortuntaly they've created a monster that means despite video technology getting hugely cheaper all the time, there is less money to invest in decent product.

fry's biggest crimes

is to take up tv airtime with a radio show - QI and by being on a panel show he's contributing to death of new writing for tv.

i've got QI in mp3 format on my phone. you miss nothing. ocasionally somebody will say something like 'oh look there's one of them' but otherwise there is no loss. its radio with pictures. it should be on radio 4, but then they wouldn't do that they would loose 90% of the audience (the thick part who like nothing else than gawping at a flickering box. radio 4 is brilliant you know, you can enjoy a show whilst doing something with you life). at least HIGNFY (which please god, somebody f*cking shoot in the head, whats it like now, series 1367 with the same f*cking jokes every episode) has a small visual element.

as for panel shows that go on and on and on like energiser bunny... meh. no room for new comedy now which costs more money and might flop. lets just have another f*cking panel show!

and the most galling part of panel shows is we PAY these people to appear and on the backs of their appearance they run out and do countrywide tours and make fortunes (oh and watch the bias of who appears based on the production company-i.e. who is signed to them). screw them. they should pay the BBC for an advertising slot. make it like ebay, they have to outbid each other to ply their trade.

play with the mbed though its good fun. if you are looking to create a game, have a look at http://www.arduino.cc/ with the gameduino shield http://excamera.com/sphinx/gameduino/

FAIL

so many damn fiddles in tax systems

here's what I propose for the world. tax on income, not profit. anything else invites misuse. even just a couple of percent i reckon would sort everything out.

"It appears that you've exceeded the maximum number of posts you can view"

"To unlock the forum and continue viewing messages, all you need to do is to Register for a free account. The entire process takes just a few minutes so create your account now and view as many threads as you like! "

try reading more than a certain number of messages and you get that. no idea what the limit is, i get that every time now.

i think you missed the point. its register to READ the forum. that's a bad sign. If el reg was register to read how many readers would it have? arsing around with yet another random sign in just to read something? f. off!

and you said -> " being way off target is unforgiveable." but I forgive you as its easter.

as for noise, my PCH squeals like a stuck pig for about 15 mins after being turned on with a faulty fan. i'm not the only one with this problem i noticed *before* they stopped randoms reading their forums.

as for ui's anything that doesn't let you change mistaken files from inside the UI is useless for consumers.

still want the gigabit fixed, takes forever to copy files up to the unraid server.
