Couldn't agree more. Upvote if you think Ballmer should have been fired long ago.

"Take the financial controls/motivations out of the equation and see what 'science' comes out of it then."
Regardless of which side you choose on the AGW debate, this statement represents the real crux of the insanity of the debate. Ultimately, both sets of blood-suckers are in this for money, plain and simple. I doubt any significant fuss would be made if there wasn't a way to extract large sums of filthy lucre out of the masses.
I'll be off back under my bridge now.
It's a republic, not a democracy. Even if you're trying to joke (but failing), at least TRY not to mislead the idiots who continue to confuse the two.
How lucky for you, that the USA is pushing toward becoming more European. Universal coverage, here we come!

For the icon to qualify, I suppose that I'll criticize your "deepfriedmeal" reference.
The only real objection to nuclear concerns what to do with the waste product. Everything else makes it more affordable than any other green option being subsidized by governments today, and it has a low carbon footprint to boot. Is nuclear waste really such a bad problem that greenies should ignore the real benefit to be had?
All of which proves that environmentalist have no concern about the planet. It's all about money, as it always has been.
Challenge accepted.
1. The heliosphere that represents this mythical threshold isn't a giant sphere at all, but is really more of an ovoid.
2. There would be no booming voice, as sound cannot travel in a vacuum.
And, there's always the Chewbacca defense.

Tim, Grant, and Ian...please explain this:

Perhaps your memories are going quicker than you think? It's true that the press ran with it much farther than the scientific community did, but the National Science Board did issue a report in 1972 titled "Patterns and Perspectives in Environmental Science" which assumed that the earth was due for a cooling period. Regardless of which side of the AGW debate you may lean toward, there was definitely a "cooling" threat discussed and researched.
Of course, I suppose we never made it to the Moon either, but I wasn't there to be sure.
While the "skipping the business cycle" theory does make some sense, isn't it more likely that Microsoft execs continue to suffer from business myopia where their products are concerned? It's one thing to innovate in ways that help users (i.e. Win3x -> Win9x), but forcing the tablet GUI on non-tablet devices makes no business sense at all for Microsoft.
It sounds like they want to manage one client OS codebase for all devices, regardless of platform. That could make some sense, though I think it could be argued that it brings its own level of complexity that washes out any savings over multiple OSes. To take that leap one step further by defaulting to the tablet GUI and eliminating 15-year-old desktop conventions in the process is unthinkable. That's not innovation, that's just stupid.
To quote Billy Madison:
"what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
"If there was some way to start a video chat simply by dialling the telephone number and choosing voice or video - I think a whole bunch more people would go for it."
It's called SIP. It's been around for a long time and most VoIP installations are based on it. While the uptake has been slow, it's mainstream now than ever and it's only a matter of time (years) before mobile phones convert to SIP for signaling voice/video and everything rides over a mobile data stream.
I know Sprint has been planning this for a while, as part of their conversion to IPv6 and I suspect other carriers are considering the same. Once that happens, video will become more commonplace, albeit still not so useful after a bender or if you just like sitting around in your underwear.
^ this.
Latest use case: look at the response from Russia and China over the atrocities in Syria. Obviously, the Internet won't kill loads of people, but there's no way I would support allowing nations like Russia and China to act as roadblocks to progress.
Would generally agree, though Microsoft offers concrete proof that there's exceptions to every rule. Shouldn't they be smart enough now about Windows to not make egregious choices like making Metro the default start menu? Personally, I'm out. I have every intention of going straight Linux or BSD once they kill support for Win7.
No, but complaints can be filed with the Federal Trade Commission, who can file an antitrust lawsuit (which is a criminal, not civil case). I would expect that Microsoft will not be happy if they receive thousands of seperate lawsuits in a short timeframe. Likely to have some summary judgments if they don't employ enough lawyers.
All of this is really just US-specific, of course. Though, I would expect complaints in Europe to be handled similiarly by the EC.
This isn't entirely true. As a former EDSer (pre-merger) and now a former HPer, there are plenty of "social loafers" in the ranks that get by based on the accomplishments of the few. Too many low performers and too few high performers. In addition, HP ES has very poor allocation of responsibilities, which is a holdover from EDS' Brown Dick and Rittenmeyer eras. It's never a good sign to a customer when project calls end up having 3 PMs participating, but no one actually taking responsibility to make things happen in a timely and efficient manner.
Prediction: HP will eventually either spin off HP ES or will die on the vine. I would suspect the latter will be more likely, but perhaps someone will have a lick of common sense that one company can become TOO BIG.
Oh really? You don't think the human traffickers responsible for much of the illegal border crossings wouldn't relish a police-free, people-free place to use as a base of operations? You should definitely keep to your bigotted, small-minded life and leave real crime to the big boys.
I appreciate it and haven't seen the kit up close yet. It's not a matter of font or icon size. It's a matter of screen real estate, which is always in short supply. About bloody well time that someone start making 1920x1080 more common place on laptop screens, although it's regretable that the kit is stuck with a Sony label.
Well, normally, I would just jack up the OSPF cost, but that doesn't work with the current automobile-traffic systems. No idea how the current lights would enforce that a path was unusable, so there would have to be other technology applied for that bit.
Sigh...as if taxes aren't high enough.
Apple is a leader in tax avoidance, based on their origination of schemes like Double Irish and treating distributors as commissionaires instead of retailers. Even with the values of the tax numbers being wildly inaccurate, there's no question that Apple is avoiding a lot of taxes from the State of California (8.84%) and the US government (whopping 35% corporate rate). I would certainly not be shocked that they effective rate on all profits is less than 10%, though not all profits were earned in the US as the author points out.
David, that's precisely the reason the Aussies should pursue this. It's truly despicable how companies will do anything they can to sell kit or service, but will flip that on its ear the moment another opportunity arises.
Marketing people should be at the bottom of the ocean right next to politicians, lawyers, and Stephanie Meyer.
"Plus, Microsoft do their damnedest to prevent VNC working out of the box, meaning you often have to configure firewalls and/or piss about in the registry just to get it working properly. Again, not very "it just works", is it?"
Have you ever used VNC? I've never one time had to muck with the registry to get it working. As for firewalls, you really need to get the sand out of your vagina.
