Re: Letter to the Hebrews

Paul can write a letter and, because he's a popular guy, someone may translate it for another audience. Fast forward a couple thousand years and the original may no longer be around, only the translated copy. That doesn't mean he's not responsible for the translated version.

Re: So why isn't the Mayan civilisation still around?

A bit of pedantry: the Mayan decline actually began several hundred years before Columbus was born, and its cause remains the subject of debate.

Alternately, there are many people of Mayan heritage still living today.

Falling slinky displays slow-motion causality

Re: Seems overcomplicated

"when the top of the slinky is released what tells [the bottom] that it should start moving?"

For that matter, what "tells" the top that it should start moving? Gravity right? I don't understand why gravity can't tell the top and bottom to start moving at the same time @_@

Hence, my upvotes of the tension/contraction theories promulgated elsewhere.

Japan Airlines to serve KFC on Christmas flights

Unhappy

Re: Oh, dear

He and his wife also opened a restaurant in Shelbyville, Kentucky. It was charmingly referred to "The Colonel's Lady". Well, until KFC sued them. Then the name was changed a bit.

It was pretty good food back in the day (and still beats the pants off KFC today).

KFC at Christmas is a (modern) Japanese tradition.

Not Burger King. Not McDonald's. Just KFC.

Seeing as how they are some of the longest-lived people on the planet, KFC once a year probably doesn't kill.

America planned to NUKE THE MOON

peyton?

Re: Look at it this way...

Not saying I approve of nuking anything, terrestrial or otherwise, mind you.

Thanksgiving in orbit: Irradiated turkey, yam-and-marshmallow mix

Re: SOCIALISM!

There's an "official" Thanksgiving story? News to me. Most I recall is making a turkey out of a tracing of my hand.

However, I can concede that I may have slept through that portion of history class.

However, I must dispute that "newspapers, radio, TV, and magazines devote vast amounts of time and space to it." From October 31st until the Friday after Thanksgiving, all American media is solely devoted to coverage of upcoming "Black Friday" sales.

(On said Friday, coverage switches from Black Friday sales to Black Friday carnage.)

Fundamentally distinct?

"sound-to-meaning mappings... was fundamentally distinct in mutts and humans"

Just because texture is noticed over shape?? I have a suspicion that if humans picked up most objects with their mouth, we'd suddenly start paying more attention to texture as well.

Also makes me wonder, how did they measure (and control for) the distinction between each object's taste ;)

The debate on whether we should continue the "electoral college' comes up every election year. Pretty much boils down to congress would have to take action to get rid of it. And "action" is to congress what kryptonite is to Superman, so there ya go: the US will always have the electoral college.
