If nothing is seriously wrong with Windows, then Windows XP must be ideal: no more updates to install!
I wonder how you could upgrade your Windows XP, if you haven't yet. Buy Vista on the second-hand black market, and run upgrade. Same thing for 7, then 8, then 8.1, but if you dont install that update Real Soon Now, you will always be vulnerable and miss out on Windows 9 and beyond for ever.
If 1 % of all desktops and laptops run Linux, that's a dazzling number, even though the desktop market be declining. Apple? I've been told Jobs has ascended into cyberspace, let's wait till they find a new leader. Microsoft? I've been told they have a new leader. Let's wait and see where he will lead. Windows? When will it be retired in favor of Midori?
The c't Magazin has reviewed the box. It will cost over Eur. 8000 for a fully equipped box. However the new garbage can has no PCIe expansion slots and no disc and just 1 processor. However, a third party offers an external RAID box (for the Thunderbolt connector) for about Eur. 3500, for a total price equal to the old MacPro, which offers about the same performance. This makes about twice the price of an HP workstation .
1) The silly video game, called GUI or desktop or Finder
2) You needed a morse key, called mouse, plus a third hand to use it
3) You could not do anything with it because there was no command line
4) The screen was too small
5) The screen was only black-and-white (Apple II had color)
6) The screen was built into the system case
7) There were no expansion slots (Apple II had 8)
8) The floppy disc drive lacked an eject button
9) Connecting a printer was only possible at the serial port, with an incompatible connector.
10) The OS was more primitive than MS-DOS
11) There was no BASIC or other programming language shipped with the system.
12) Software? You could buy MS Word and Excel (on later models).
13) It was twice as expensive as an equivalent Atari ST or Commodore Amiga.
The good news:
A) Few people mourned the lack of an audio-cassette drive
B) It had a real CISC processor
C) It had more RAM than the PC
D) Successor models came with SCSI discs.
E) AppleTalk was more advanced than the COM: ports of the PC
F) It was as cheap as the original IBM PC had been in 1981.
With WMware vSphere you can run several virtual machines side by side, and you get a nice graphical GUI with a thin client on your desk top. Memory and CPU power will be allocated to the OS that needs it. The alternative would be to run LInux in a VM on Windows 2012, but I am unsure what that will do to your performance. The members of your family can have a personal VM each.
The best performance is when each VM gets its own disc volumes as needed. For shared data, you can use a separate Linux FS and use Samba, NFS, or AFS to export it to the other VMs.

You realise that if Windows 9 is a major new release (i.e. Windows NT 7.0 - where Windows 8 means Window NT 6.2) then not only is it the fastestly developed one since MS WIndows 2.0, but especially it is the very first major new version that does not bring a new Graphical User Interface, but will bring you the unloved old Modern / Metro GUI. OK, Wikipedia says that the biggest improvement (overlapping panes) came with Windows 2.03.
Some versions of Internet Explorer will by default every web site including http://www.microsoft.com/, until it is explicitly enabled, which improves security.
My wish list:
- the browser should be 100 % guaranteed bug-free
- the browser should be fast and use little memory
- no caching - a proxy server does that
- no plug-ins, no Java, no Active X, no skins, no sound, no moving images, no tabs, no scripting, no cookies
- the ability to print, as well as view, HTML pages
Nice to have:
- an advertising blocker
- an FTP client and/or WebDAV client that supports uploads
Apple has already thrown it's sole server model into the dustbin, and now its sole workstation option has been replaced with a dustbin. A fully equipped MacPro used to cost £ 10000, the current model houses just 1 CPU, 1 SSD, no discs, 64 GB RAM is barely enough to run MS-DOS, obsolete 1Gb/s Ethernet, and few PCIe expansion slots. What are Thunderbolt ports usable for?
Jobs said, "We don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk, and our DNA will not let us ship that."
It's in fact easier to sell ten $500 PC's than one $5000 PC. Apart from the price tag and the fact that you have to buy Winddows separately, Apple is selling the same pieces of junk as the Microsoft crowd.
NT was called 'Not There', because it was released well past schedule, just like Windows NT 6.0 (called Longhorn or Vista or even 8).
Microsoft's first Operating System was Xenix (not counting DOS), that later became SCO Unix. They tried to build a server Operating System, call LAN Manager, to beat Novell Netware. Some of the functionality later went into Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95 and NT, but it was just peer-to-peer networking. LANMAN mostly failed.
WinNT 3.1 was purely a Workstation OS. By Win NT 3.50 Redmond came up with a server edition, which was inferior to Netware, OS/2 or Unix. It took until NT 5.0 (Windows 2000) for the server edition to become worthy of its name.
