Review: HP Spectre XT TouchSmart

Re: no competition breeds lukewarm products

+1 for Lenovo here.

I bought a W700 with my very own beer tokens a few years ago and it's still going strong. 2 RAID0 HDDs, wacom tablet, hardware colour calibrator, anti-shock system, and plenty more besides. The only thing I didn't get was the 2nd screen.

I would struggle to find something more extraordinarily useful. I wish they hadn't stopped making them!

....I could have gone for HP (as used by the US army),

... or Dell (yawn),

or Thinkpads: as used in space. FRICKIN SPACE!!

everything else was details, really.

(I chose a W700, which still pulls it's (considerable) weight and has a PROPER SCREEN @ 1920X1200. I wish they still made them.)

Both my grandmothers were within 100 yards of oblivion on several occasions during the Blitz (One in Tottenham had 4 bombs land within one street of hers on 4 seperate raids, the other in Kennington where she heard the V1 engine cut out whilst sitting on the outside toilet with my infant Father in her lap).

Thanks to the prevailing winds on those occasions, I am sitting here writing this.

If you can't be bothered then you really ask for everything you get. How tricky is it to keep a receipt? Also you're not doing yourself any favours buying armfuls at the supermarket. Boxes of bulbs are doubtless treated as gently as boxes of beans. The supermarket has no interest in the quality of the bulbs because it will happily refund/exchange almost anything and return it to the supplier. They must love people like you! Keep up the moaning, they would say.

I'm a-feared of the future

This article perfectly illustrates why I still have a BT iPlayer digital set-top box (and a Philips 26" CRT)

The iPlayer is quick and has a great EPG. It is prone to locking on to one channel occasionally (although I must say not lately - switchover?) but to be honest it takes a while to notice. It also contains a 56k modem (woo!) and comes with a keyboard.

This article is long overdue.

Re: I don't get NAS boxes...

I do...

I bought a Synology DS-413J for £275. It arrived, I stuffed 4 disks in and turned it on (hybrid RAID FTW!). A fair bit of whirring and clicking later, it's all working. Job done.

It sits quietly in the corner and acts as a printer server and media server for all the devices in the house. It runs on 30W.

My gas-guzzling PC with the 6 fans and 1000W PSU doesn't need to be on 24/7.

Re: Misunderstanding technology direction

Doesn't work that way with Autocad. Autocad doesn't distribute, therefore I'm needing one core per seat, as fast and responsive as can be delivered, with several hundred/thousand pounds worth of graphic card to show it all off. Thin client is JNGE.

The pretty-picture and sample files look good and in all probabilty work quite well in a 'cloudy' format. Just don't try loading up any real working files and then expect not to cry.

Stuff the battery life - fingers crossed for a decent screen size

From the photos, they look like 16:10 format. Anything less than 17"@1900X1200 is not good enough on it's own for pro use. The extra 20% vertical pixels make a world of difference. Plugging in a secondary monitor as a minimum requirement just defeats the purpose.

And might I say, it's about time too!

I wish Lenovo were still in this market. I'd love to update my 3yr old W700. Still, 3Ghz+8gb ram+raid 0 remains quite useful on the move, and nothing looks better to walk into a meeting with it, if only for the 'gosh thats a big one' double-entendre opportunities.
