Minister tells the House of Lords it'll be another 12 weeks before UK's deleted criminal records can be restored

Fujitsu... they sound familiar

Oh yeah - they built the Horizon system at the Post Office. And that went really well didn't it? The judge in the Bates vs Post Office trial said he had "grave concerns" about the "veracity of evidence given by Fujitsu employees to other courts in previous proceedings about the known existence of bugs, errors and defects in the Horizon system".

Farewell, Android Pay. We hardly tapped you

Matt 75

paying with your data....

from the TOS for Google Pay: "Information Google May Share. In order for Google to provide Google Pay services, you permit Google to disclose to apps and websites that you have set up Google Pay, and to share your device, payment, location, and account information with your payment method's issuer and network. Where necessary to process your transactions, you also permit Google to share your personal information with merchants, payment processors, and other third parties."

'$5bn for Slack?! I refuse to pay!' You don't pay – and that's its biggest problem

Matt 75

maybe if it wasn't so bloody pricey they might get more people on the paid plans??

seriously $6.67/£4.65 a month for the standard plan, doubling to $12.50/£8.72 for the 'plus' plan - that's more expensive than Office 365 (£3.10/£7.00/£7.80)

Adobe: We REALLY are taking Flash security seriously – honest

Re: just to remind everyone

Sure. 220 'high' vulnerabilities in IE, 86 for Chrome, 57 for FF, 65 for Flash.

https://www.gfi.com/blog/most-vulnerable-operating-systems-and-applications-in-2014/

Matt 75

just to remind everyone

that (according to an article published here on El Reg) in 2014 Chrome, Firefox and (no surprise) IE all had more vulnerabilities than Flash.

So everyone complaining about the dangers of running Flash - maybe you need to switch to a Mac running Safari too as that was the only major browser that had fewer vulns than Flash did....

Mozilla's Flash-killer 'Shumway' appears in Firefox nightlies

"Flash is a security nightmare"

As opposed to Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox - ALL of which had more security issues last year than Flash?

As mentioned in one of your own articles, in fact: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/02/26/windows_beats_apple_linux_with_fewest_bugs_for_2014/

What is this hell of coporate GMail of which you type?

Do you use or have you used corporate GMail?

I haven't, so I am interested in hearing your businesses experience with it

Did look into it and decided not to go with it, mainly due to there being no equivalent to the Exchange 'calendar attendant', so would have meant giving someone a considerable amount of work processing meeting room requests - or buying third party software to handle it which would have wiped out any saving.

Also just doesn't integrate with Active Directory as well as Exchange does.

Adobe's Flex grabs top project slot at Apache

Matt 75
Go

Flex can still be made to work for iOS

Presumably you can still publish Flex apps as native apps for iOS and Android using Adobe AIR... so this would still give these products an option for running on mobile/tablet.

I think it's going to be a while before HTML5 really catches up with everything that can be done in Flash... and even longer before Internet Explorer catches up with that!

Windows Firefox stiffs Adobe Flash, plays H.264 YouTube vids

Google updates Chrome Flash plugin for security, stability

Matt 75

Re: 99.9% of users fired up Flash?

Yep, YouTube does use Flash as the default video format.

Why? Because Flash - for all its faults - is still much, much better at handling video than the various browsers' HTML5 implementations.

http://transitioning.to/2012/01/the-world-of-pain-that-is-html5-video/

Matt 75
WTF?

Re: Disabled in a flash

yeah, cause of course you couldn't possibly fire off sounds automatically in a webpage via HTML5 audio... oh no, wait - you can!*

And - you've no way of blocking it!

People can design absolute crap using any technology. At least Flash content is easy to block and small to download. Just you wait until everyone starts doing ad banners with whacking great PNGs in HTML5!

*except in Safari where such hideousness is blocked by the browser

Microsoft's Surface plan means the world belongs to Android now

FAIL

dodgy statistics

Guess I'll be the first to point out that comparing a '302 per cent increase in job postings for Android developers' to a '220 per cent jump for iOS developers' is meaningless unless you have some other numbers for comparison... there might have only been 1 Android job posting originally and 5000 iOS postings!

Adobe can't penetrate punters' tight wallets: Users holding out for CS6

Matt 75
Thumb Down

each upgrade brings more problems!

What do they expect when each 'upgrade' just introduces more problems (and doesn't fix existing ones?). We're still on CS4 as we found that CS5 often breaks content written in ActionScript 2.0. Would have preferred to stay on CS3 but it became impossible to obtain more licences without resorting to piracy.

Android's Chrome finish comes too late for Flash coating

because HTML5 is not - and was never intended to be - a replacement for Flash?

Netflix goes live in Blighty

Matt 75

lovefilm = junk mail galore

Have never seen a firm so junk mail happy. even cancelling the service did nothing to stem the tide, nor did phoning them up and asking to be removed from their mailing list. I have since moved house but I bet they're still sending it through to the old address.

I also never once got sent the top choice from my list.

Wow that initial selection on Netflix is hilariously bad!

Sony hits stop on Walkman tape players

Matt 75
Dead Vulture

they probably weren't

They probably weren't still making them - it's just any time a company like this wants a bit of free publicity they announce that they're going to stop making such-and-such an antiquated device and the media slavishly publish their press release giving free publicity.

It's getting pretty tedious quite frankly.

UK.gov sticks to IE 6 cos it's more 'cost effective', innit

Matt 75
WTF?

the simple answer

the simple answer is for all web developers to start charging more for developing for IE6 so that suddenly it's not quite so cost-effective to stick with it!

so this is basically their answer - they are NEVER going to upgrade away from IE6? How's that going to work, they'll have to do so sometime surely??

Stick a fork in floppies - they're done

Matt 75
Dead Vulture

fall for it every time?

Any time some company wants a bit of free press, they make a big announcement about how they're going to stop making/selling such-and-such a nearly out-of-date technology. And every time, without fail, journalists across the land run the story, giving the company the free press they're after.

Come on El Reg, rise above it...

Microsoft's Silverlight 4 - Flash developers need not apply

Matt 75
FAIL

developers unlikely to switch

Programmers in most of the areas where something like Flash or Silverlight actually makes sense (i.e. web games, e-learning, RIAs, annoying stupid ad banners and - for the moment at least, web video) already tend to know ActionScript and all the foibles of the Flash API back to front. So where's the advantage of switching to Silverlight programming - especially when all designers work in Flash?

Even Adobe's efforts to make the Flash IDE the most annoyingly crash-happy application ever would be unlikely to make anyone switch over.
