Amazon exec tells UK peers: No, we don't want to be dominant. Also, we don't fancy being taxed on revenues

EU is to blame

Amazon is just complying with the way the EU was set up. That biz pay tax in one location for all and the idea was that all members would "harmonise" their tax levels to be the same. Small countries like Ireland and Luxemburg have long said F that and set low tax rates to effectively steal tax revenue from larger members just as the UK.

Amazon is just doing exactly what the present EU setup is intended to do, funnel a tiny tax rate for the whole EU into Ireland and Luxemburg.

So, about that Google tax on Android makers in the EU – report pegs it at up to $40 per phone

Well, in China...

they don't use the Play store nor do then have to follow Googles rules about how apps must behave. The result is that apps run constantly, everything runs. The Chinese version of Uber (Didi) despite my never having used it would by lunch time have consumed 40% of my phones battery by forcing gps and location tracking to be on permanently. They all behave like this in China. Trust me in this case I want Google being the benevolent overload as the alternative is just awful.

UK networks have 'no plans' to bring roaming fees back after Brexit

As someone who roams for free in the US and Hong Kong free roaming from a network has sod all to do with the EU. Also, just how many normal people spend any time in a year out side their own country? as some one who grew up poor its only the whiney upper middle class guardian readers that think phone roaming costs are an issue that will effect peoples normal lives. Most normal people it'll have at worst make a slight difference for at most 2 weeks a year and only then if they go to the "EU" rather than to say Turkey or the US for a summer holiday.

Please also note that US T-mobile users get free roaming worldwide (on certain plans) so again, sod all to do with the EU

EU wants one phone plug to rule them all. But we've got a better idea.

See the Australian standard plug, 3 pin like a mini UK plug, its great for most electrical needs.

UK.gov commits to rip-and-replacing Blighty's wheezing internet pipes

Re: Not wanting to state the obvious

The reason, Blue Planet.

commercial tv doesnt fund stuff that takes years to make, is expensive and may be a total flop economically speaking. It dosent care if it generates views and money for the next 20 years, it needs to be almost immediately financially viable or the go bust.

licence fee means BBC can go fund things that are works of art rather than prostitute themselves to The Sun reading classes.

The Quantum of Firefox: Why is this one unlike any other Firefox?

the reason i needed ff and what made it better for me than all other browsers was its addons. it just killed evey reason i had to stay with ff.

Who's behind the Kodi TV streaming stick crackdown?

They only have themselves to blame

I for years, used netfix paying them every month and additionally paying Unotelly for a dns redirect thing so I could get the US Netflix which actually had the content I wanted. I wanted TV shows, I didn't care at all about films.

Netflix then decided that it would put up my fee and start enforcing geoblocking, taking away all the content I actually wanted. I asked Netflix and their response essentially was, our content providers are more important to us than your money is so go F yourself.

If Netflix they can offer an inferior service to others just because what place I'm in then they have that right but if VW said yeah, your car, well you are only licenced to use the front two seats because your in the UK and not Germany, customers would not put up with it. If content makers want to stop piracy then they need to stop treating those customers like crap because they are in one place rather than another.

EU whacks first nail into mobile roaming charges' coffin

exactly this

Yep. This is exactly the sort of reason I voted to leave the EU. They have utterly failed to do anything that promotes economic growth but instead use things like "ooh I can use my phone on holiday" to placate the idiot masses.

If you don't like roaming fees go tell your network and if they don't care, move to 3.

Would have been nice to see something happen outside the US. Clearly Google thinks Americans are worth more.

We need to talk about SPEAKERS: Sorry, 'audiophiles', only IT will break the sound barrier

Waaaaahhhh!!!! why doesnt everyone want perfectly accurate sound reproduction, its not fair, its not fair i tell you!!!!!!

Sadly while much could be done to increase the accuracy of audio reproduction thats not what people want. Just look at the money Apple just paid for Beats. Beats as headphones go suck, they are exceedingly expensive junk with a spectacularly flavoured sound but its what people want.

This article is the aural equivalent of arguing we should all want perfectly nutritionally balance food pellets rather than the vast array of culinary delights we choose to partake of.

no, Google killed it!!!

Really, seriously the desire to get a woman, any woman got Austin on it? It's things like this that makes me despair at feminists. They weren't proposing some great woman from history, one who truly did something great. The got one who for all intents wrote trashy romance novels. While I get publishing was a step for women it's hardly like she wrote anything meaningful. P and p is nothing more that a period version of mills and boon.

O2 refuses to deny plans to offload home broadband product

argrh, nooo say it isnt so! My parents have sky and their current ADSL2+ line syncs lower than their old Tiscali ADSL1 line ever did (they got 8mbit, now sync at 7.5) and the actual throughput is normally about 2 when it works at all.

BT in ad slapdown after 'misleading' punters on fibre deployment dates

I'm in the same boat as everyone else, BT keep moving the fecking date as it rolls round. A shower of blatantly lying bar stewards.

My only hope I that Be offer a FTTC package by the time I'm finally upgraded so I never have to deal with BT directly ever again.

Google's Android 'let down' sinks iPad rivals - IDC

its the screen

I am a big android fan and i want a tablet but, honeycomb is a bit poo. worse still thats not the real problem, the problem is i want to used the device in portrait and both honeycomb and manufacturers dont like that. they seem dead set on insisting the only F ing thing you could want to is watch video and so you must use it in landscape and have a 16:9 screen

i want a 10 inch tablet but a 4:3 one.

Women face 'glass cliff' after breaking glass ceiling

what a load of carp

to get to the top one assumes it takes a hell of a lot of long days, staying in the office any time there is a need and kissing much ass. women strangely are more likely to prioritise things other than their job as being the most important thing in their life. this does include having babies, often once produced women like to see their kids in a way that some men just dont. kid is off school sick? odds are the mother is the one that takes the day off.

oh and men get fcuk all paternity leave so when men are as able as women to stay at home and raise the kids as women are only then are the number of women at the top going to equalise with men.

Google turns up nose at ebook monopoly claims

Thumb Up

sod publishers

have you ever had to get a specialist recommended text? especially ones that are recommended texts across the country for a very narrow subject. oh no its out of print you say, publisher will take orders for more and print when it has enough orders sitting. you need it by next week you say even if that means buying a 20 year old 2nd hand copy for 5 times its new print cost.

ive had to order books from all over the world to get them (including australia) for books that are published in the same city i live in because they are to stupid to print them in advance of students needing them.

i say if publishers dont give a crap about the books and are not printing them they should become public domain and google can show them fro free if they like, better yet they loose copyright and then project gutenberg should get a copy
