Delete Apps?

Do you have proof of that happening? I have many apps that are either not on the market, or have been removed from the market since getting them, but they remain on my device (Motorola Droid). I have no problems with Google Android.

Also, I have a Kindle. If you purchase the books through them, sure, you can have issues, but if you purchase your books elsewhere, or get them elsewhere (like Google's giant FREE library of books), you don't have issues. They can only take back things you got from them. And you agree to their conditions when buying their DRMed items anyways.

Pretty much, what I'm saying, is that you, sir, are wrong.

Really?

I don't get how many of you think that paper is critical to learning. I'm in uni right now and I do most of my studying on the computer. Youtube, Cramster, etc all help immensely. With a tablet computer (I don't have one, but did use a touchscreen device on my netbook for a while), I can take notes just like with paper, and best of all, I can't lose them. Also, I can embed images, videos, etc. Also, I can sync them to my other devices, or have friends send me notes that I missed. Superior in every way, I'd say. Except maybe a lack of electricity. But if we can develop hybrid tablet/e-ink devices, that would become much less of an issue...

Disagrree with Chad H.

If you were only paying for access, then anybody could have the game for free, and wouldn't have to buy the CD. You are buying a copy of the game code, and as such are an "owner" just like you own your television. You don't own the cable, however, that is rented out to you at a monthly price, just like your access to the online play.

So yes, you do own the game. No, you do not have a "right" to be allowed on their servers.

While that's an interesting idea, you're going to be wasting more time organizing tabs than actually doing stuff...now if there was a mouse gesture, it might be better... I still think that chrome is great because i never seem to have this problem...and that's with around 12 tabs open at any time...Just pop them around, and if i get tired of the clutter, i pop one out and pop other ones onto it...

I agree

Whether or not it was a successful (profit making) venture, it did push the bar forward for phones. It was an android phone that was powerful, had android without any stupid gui overlays, etc. It standardized the hardware that is to be used on all current and future models...I would call it a success.

Android

Another win for android? Even if they don't make an app (who cares...), shouldn't the ability to use flash in the browser with 2.2 make it so that Android phones (and eventually tablets) will have the best service? The exact same as the desktop service...(I haven't used it in a while...is it still free?)

'Steve Jobs' switches to Android

mlo0352

I disagree!

ultranote,

You must not actually use an Android device. While you think that it is a me-too device, that may be true. It does have to try and emulate the popular mobile OS of the time because that is the only way to get people to switch over...Apple has successfully convinced people all over the world that the iPhone is the only worthwhile smartphone for the average user. This is far from correct though.

Your little list at the end of your post proves to me that you do not know what you are talking about.

Android has many great apps, and the repository is growing everyday. It has apps that do far more than Apple does now, or WILL EVER do! There are tethering apps of all kinds...USB, blutooth, wifi, and many for free.

Most of the apps you will need on your phone are actually free! Also, there may not be as many games, but we have to give developers time to realize that Android is here to stay...

The fragemntation concern is a valid one though...This is simply because of the range of hardware that exists. That is a problem, and it is only worsened by the fact that most technology users are morons.

The buggy app bit is far from true. Many of the apps are just as good or better than anything on the iPhone app store.

Android 2.2 brings so much more functionality it is insane to compare it to the iphone os and call it natively inferior...

Android also brings in many developers who simply want to code so that it will:

a) kill the iphone,

b) give users apps that could never work on an iphone

c) give users awesome apps for free

All of these things come from having an open source and non-greedy Operating System and Business Structure.

Too Bad

I think that people should just be able to interact whoever they want. If a kid sees a penis, and is too dumb to know what it is, too bad. If they learn about sex through this, then holy crap, they might be a normal human being. The problem I have with policing the internet is that all laws appeal to the lowest level of intelligence, and on the internet, that can get pretty fucking low.

A police button!? Do you know how much that will get abused?? Even on accident!

I hope The Register is among the sanely minded people like myself who think that you accept a certain level of personal responsibility when you access the internet. If a parent is afraid that their child is going to get involved in this kind of thing, TALK TO THEM as you would about strangers in real life. If you are still scared, limit their internet connectivity. Just because the internet exists doesn't mean that they should have unlimited access. This of course in my opinion should only apply to under teens, really. After that, they should be mature enough to handle the internet...

Motorola Droid - the not quite iPhone killer

mlo0352

Actually...

I am extremely glad that the apps are not charged to my phone bill. If they were, I WOULD NOT buy them. It is much easier for apps to count as a seperate purchase (as in a real purchase, like you would at a store).

WIN CE apps? Are you serious? Different operating system = different apps. The iPhone doesn't do WIN CE either. Oh, and Win CE sucks. I've had a phone with it, and if you think the droid lags with those thumbnails, just look at the clock when you turn your phone's screen on. It literally takes 2 seconds to update the time!

Apps being crappy? I disagree first of all. Secondly, the apps will lag behind for a little bit until developers realize that Android is going to last. And now that they have determined that it will, they HAVE started developing.

Oh, and don't blame the apps on the Droid, it's Android.

Doesn't play WMV? Neither does the iphone (to my knowledge, there might be "an app for that")

I will admit that it should play AVIs. The battery life is annoying (but no more so than any smartphone). The battery does get a bit hot, but it doesnt matter because the heat isn't by your fingers. The battery case falling off is annoying, but I have a case so it doesn't affect me.

What is it?

What is it about computer companies trying to limit users to their own hardware. Don't they realize that it really hurts their image with intelligent users? I hate the fact that they don't really care about their customers. Look at the iPad for example, using non-standard connection types that disallow the use of non-apple certified hardware. It's ridiculous.

And I agree, it isn't up to them to make your data secure, it's up to you.

Apple iPad vs netbooks: fight not over yet

mlo0352
Thumb Down

Well...

The way I see it, the iPad is just a cartoonishly large iPod touch, and the only function it really has is to replace the kindle as a more media centric semi-ebook reader. The things it does are pointless if you have an ipod or iphone. Also, if it was supposed to be an intermediate device, I cannot for the life of me understand why in the hell they would have put a freaking 16, 32, 64 gb choice in it. Basic netbook tend to be ~120 (unless you go for ssds), and I realize that this device isn't supposed to be used with real applications, but I feel like they could have put a bigger memory in there so people could actually have their music and video collections on it, and all that... Just a thought.

A glorified ebook reader. Yay. Let's hope the competition steps up to the plate.
