World's largest ship swallows 900 MEGATINS of baked beans

Pieter Schelte

What about the Pieter Schelte, currently docked somewhere in Rotterdam? Or is it because that ship is technically still under construction?

(no comment on the quality of the entry itself. it's Wikipedia, after all)

Joke

That's it!

A bit of comic relief thrown in for free.

"Daddy, I do not want a boat like this."

or

"Hey, Daddy, *I* want an Oompa Loompa! I want you to get me an Oompa Loompa right away"

or, for the younger generation:

"But I don't want any old squirrel! I want a *trained* squirrel!"

(and no, i won't get my coat. I like it here, thanks very much)

TheRealRoland

Made me giggle, all this (pretend?) outrage

Meta question: what is it that you're looking for when visiting this site?

News, or nicely-laid-out news items in a soothing, aesthetically-pleasing way, while using a colour-palette that surely won't offend any of the readers.

This is all stuff that can change, and can be changed again over time.

Focus on the message, not how the message looks from a visual point of view?

You want the snark? Stay here. You want the glitzy super duper agile-developed responsive-designed website? Go to Ars Technica or somewhere else.

>what about a beta site

"Do, or do not. There is no try"

TheRealRoland

I'm OK

At least the newest stories are at the top, or close to the top. And stuff is being worked on. And I don't know how big El Reg's development team is, but in general, site-wide changes should not happen overnight / be rushed into production anyways.

Dunno if you have insight in the financials of The Register, but i think it's fair to say there's not a team of 10 developers working feverishly on things to meet deadlines.

When comparing the site (for instance, looking on Ars Technica), sometimes new articles are displayed either as a narrow banner at the top of the page, or sometimes as a one-column item in one of the columns. Very confusing when having just read that article on their mobile site (simply the newest article at the top). The Register does not have that problem.

What really surprises me in these comments is the amount of implied violence when 'stuff' is not done the way the commentors like it. I'm sure my ratio of up/down votes will suffer, but are you trying to be a bit like the nork-hackers saying 'i dont like this movie, so the world will burn if you release it to the public?' Come on people, you should be a bit smarter than that...

May be a little bit extreme comparison, but some of these comments... oh boy. Don't know what you are like in person, but you may want to work on some communication skills when on the net (other than 'hulk angry! hulk smash!').

TheRealRoland

Commenting when browsing mobile?

Is it possible to give back commenting when browsing on mobile? Not sure how to get there from here.

I'm on Android, KK 4.4.2, using Firefox, but am not seeing a comment button.

What i see is that the Samsung Magician software allows you to run the ssd in 'rapid mode'; http://techreport.com/review/25282/a-closer-look-at-rapid-dram-caching-on-the-samsung-840-evo-ssd

Looks like it's a form of ram disk, allowing the software to combine smaller write actions into bigger ones. Downside is that it's a ram disk...

The other stuff that the tool does is nothing spectacular: run a TRIM, run a benchmark, and switch between sets of OS Optimizations. These optimizations are nothing specials, just standard OS things like 'enable hibernation (for quick startup time)', Enable / Disable Search Service, etc.

When using this SSD on non-Windows platforms, i would expect it to work just the same as when running on a Windows platform without RAPID mode enabled.

EDIT: can't speak to the encryption stuff - but since there's no sticker on the box saying 'encryption for windows only' - i'm assuming this is functionality supported on other OSes.

EDIT2: but, digging a little bit deeper - three modes: bios password (assuming on the drive); TGC Opal - assuming you need this software / layer installed, then the drive is compatible with that protocol, and 'encrypted drive' has the tooltip 'Encrypted Drive feature provided by BitLocker® Drive Encryption in Windows® 8 and Windows Server® 2012.'

You want lightweight cars? Buy Chinese or 20 year old cars.

yeah - rules of thumb I use when talking to peeps in Ye Olde Worlde are 16C = 61F; 20C = 68F; 25C = 77F; 38C = 100F

But then when it's cold - it's very simple. 0F = -18C, 12F = -11C, 32F = 0C - anything below 0F converts to 'why again did i decide to live here?'

Problem with the 840 EVO

Apparently some problems with TLC in combination with the firmware of this drive (Samsung seems to be ready to release a new firmware around 15th of October)

Older files seem to be stored or accessed differently, whereby the read speed sometimes is as low as 40mb/s (compared to 400 - 500 mb/s). By defragging your drive (thus moving files around) the read speed is restored to the faster speeds, then slowly declining again over time (1 month or so).

See here for more info (halfway through the thread) http://www.overclock.net/t/1507897/samsung-840-evo-read-speed-drops-on-old-written-data-in-the-drive/440

TheRealRoland

But not that bigger than

a Samsung Note 3 or 4 (can't remember which one, but i'm sure both of these are close matches themselves) -- the Passport is slightly wider, and a just a bit shorter.

And with the Apple iPhone6 being the bee's knees right now, what are people complaining about? Really, the size? That it's square? I'm sure we'll hear the age-old 'app store is empty!' - you know, i don't need no stinkin' apps.

That Blackberry Passport...

This is going to be a love-hate thing, but i like it. Yes, ugly as heck, but exactly what -I- want. A large touchscreen, and a physical blackberry keyboard. Right now i have the Samsung Note 2 - nice big screen, but i do miss that physical keyboard... And just the Blackberry OS in general. Compared to Android, -I- think things have been thought through much better, especially from a business-use point of view.

Feds crack down harder on 'lasing'. Yep, aircraft laser zapping... Really

Re: not convinvced

The 14 years was not just based on this one incident. If i remember correctly, this person was out on parole, already had a couple of earlier warnings on his record, then lied about things, and even had his kids (or her kids) also play around with the laser. All that, combined with his latest action, caused the judge to sentence him for 14 years.

Re: not convinvced

It sounds like you already made up your mind ("i didn't get hurt, so why should others", right?).
