So this one time, at Bandcamp, half the staff were laid off

"Company will never remember any all-nighters or that you missed your family time to deliver that essential feature on time.

The nano second you are a surplus to the requirement, you'll be let go."

This. My eldest son's first words were "Daddy's gone" For the best part of a year I was working all hours God sent and more to get a massive project out of the door.

Three months later I was out the door.

I vowed never to work like that again & never did. I still went on to have a successful career, but on my terms.

It's like a Rolex vs my Casio watch. The Rolex clearly tells better time because it cost £6,000 where as my Casio cost £20.

On the other hand, maybe Linn hi-fi equipment & Rolex watches are about displays of conspicuous wealth?

$7? $8? a month for a verified Twitter account? I wish.

Twitter on my Android app seems very keen to charge me £11/month, with a generous offer of £114.99 for a whole year. I have ever seen a less enticing offer in my entire puff.

To have one floppy failure is unlucky. To have 20 implies evil magic or a very silly user

Once I actually had the real problem of real 3.5" floppies failing in short order. In the mid 2000's I was working at a well site in tropical Uganda. My "office" was 500m from the well site itself and I had to transfer data between the two locations twice a day.

In the time it took to walk the distance between the 2 air conditioned locations, the disks would fail about half the time. I ended up making several disk copies in the hopes that one might survive the journey. I guess, heat & humidity were the culprits.

Not to forget the Youth Hostel

Anent accommodation, there is also the SYHA Youth Hostel at South Lanark https://www.syha.org.uk/where-to-stay/lowlands/new-lanark.aspx

I absolutely agree that New Lanark is well worth a visit. There is also a fine walk up to the Falls of Clyde to complete the day out.

Windows 10 upgrade ADWARE forces its way on to Windows 7 and 8.1

Re: Why upgrade?

OK, the Win 10 Wizard suggests that I won't have to reinstall any programs but................

2. Will I get any benefit from upgrading, other than a possible slight increase in security, but bearing in mind that I have avoided virus infection since my first 286 running DOS 4.1?

Thanks

Why upgrade?

I have a Win 8.1 laptop fully configured to hide the Win 8.1 interface, including Classic Shell. I run a lot of very specialist geotechnical programs I have two questions

1. If I upgrade will I have to re-install all my programs?

2. Will I get any benefit from upgrading, other than a possible slight increase in security, but bearing in mind that I have avoided virus infection since my first 286 running DOS 4.1?

I am completely OS agnostic. My computer is a tool for me do my work. I just want my computer to run my specialist programs and for items to be where I expect them.

Thanks

As the spy chiefs are members of government agencies they are clearly honest people who have nothing to hide. I suggest that Simon Davies simply makes contact with them and asks them for their DNA and dabs. Why should they refuse? Into the bargain they will be $1000 better off. What's not to like?

UK Govt refuses to ban shale gas 'fracking'

BD 1

And coal mining

And if you look earthquake maps of the UK, you will find that coal mines are associated with induced earthquakes too. Lucky that Thatcher closed them all.

Faccing/fracking just exists

"Why is it necessary to abbreviate the word 'fracturing" to "fracking"?"

Because that is the accepted terminlogy thats been used in oil and gas drilling for decades, spelt fracking or fraccing. There is no right or wrong, the word just exists and saying that it is gramatically incorrect will not make it go away..

BD 1

Go for it

This is a sensible response from the government. Like all extractive industries, shale gas has its environmental problems but these are not substantially different from that associated with conventional gas-well drilling or coal mining. The idea that fraccing will lead to widespread pollution of our water supplies and flaming gas coming from our water taps is nonsense.

Of more environment concern is the disposal of the water and associated chemicals that are injected into the well as part of the fraccing process. Yes this is an issue, but with proper planning, not an insurmountable one.

Our modern society needs energy and shale gas is worth exploring for. Whether it will turn out to be the bonaza that the proponents are selling remains to be seen.

Not even proof-read

Ben Goldacre was utterly scathing about the Jill Bando Institute report.

http://www.badscience.net/2009/07/is-this-a-joke/

Quote <This research was incomprehensible and unreadable.> is typical.

It would seem that the report is not just premature but not even proof-read. A fine basis for government policy.

ACPO, who are they?

So who the heck is ACPO anyway to be making recommendations? It is not a statuary body, it is in fact a private company conforming to the requirements of company law. How is that that some sort of unofficial "dining club" can presume to influence how the police operate?

Does this mean that a US judge could extradite Tony Blair as a war criminal without having to produce evidence to UK court? I like it!
