Google starts Street View in Europe

Joe K
Thumb Up

Help yourselves Google

At least over in Europe they'll get far less fucknuts suing Google simply for money, because of "mental trauma" or some bloody excuse.

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest if i appeared on a Google street view, it would be a very tiny claim to web fame at the least.

Honestly, unless you are on some kind of witness protection program, or are a secret agent, you have no right to complain.

PS3 to get movie downloads this summer?

Joe K
Happy

As for the present....

....tomorrow the COD4 map pack is available ahead of schedule, then on Friday we have "Play against Infinity Ward" day, then all weekend we have double XP.

And at the same time, with luck, we'll also have the free Metal Gear Online beta working, which will get us through to GTA4 Tuesday.

What a week to be a gamer.

Atom-based Eee PC to hit UK in June

Over 300 quid??

Not a chance.

The initial attraction to those things were the sub-£200 price. Much like a Wii, its an impulse buy of a neat gadget.

Anymore and you get into a whole other area of self-haggling and comparisons.

Sony pooh-poohs Amazon PS3 PlayTV pre-order posting

Joe K

Hope its true

£60 isn't bad for a freeview DVR box.

£100 though, not a chance, so hopefully Amazon are closer to the mark.

£50 or lower though would be even better, after all it is just a receiver, the PS3 does the rest of the trickery, so they best not charge us through the nose for this thing.

Boffins develop '500TB iPod' storage tech

Joe K
Unhappy

Heard that one before......

Yawn.

Every so often a Uni annouces some magical memory tech, years away obviously, that goes absolutely NOWHERE!

The big white hope was Keele uni, with their high density memory tech in 2001, that was, according to El Reg, only 2 years away.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2001/02/14/two_more_years/

Maybe the big memory companies buy them off, or worse, but these things never materialise.

"why only this morning BBC Breakfast featured a ten-minute bit about bubblewrap"

If i was seeing that on the train i'd be shouting "oi, you stole that idea off Rimmer's bunkmate, Thickie Holden"

Joe K

Broadcasting what?

Can't say i've ever felt the need to keep up with GMTV on the train, or the umpeenth repeat of the ever-depressing BBC breakfast news. Fuck all else to watch at the only times i'd bother to use the thing.

I can't for the life of me imagine who thought this would be a good idea in the UK.

Nintendo preparing DS Lite update, pundit claims

Joe K

A bit ridiculous....

.....seeing as everyone in Japan surely has at least 3 DS's per person by now, so why worry about slowing sales.

Still, i'm sure the new model will sell like hot cakes all over again, those wacky japs.

Ninty should be careful though, mucking about with too much hardware and confusing the consumer is what killed off Sega.

PS3 owners game iPlayer

Joe K
Thumb Down

Shite anyway

I can stream iplayer stuff on the PC and iTouch with perfect quality.

Tried ps3iplayer.com, it maxes out my 2MB connection instantly, total jerkfest.

And during the fits and starts when it runs it looks like low-res realplayer video circa 1998. Ugh.

Unless they get the latest flash version running, the Beeb can keep their shitty Wii streams.

Joe K

Oops.

I posted a link about from the blog about Sony/MS wanting to control it before noticing it had already been reported here.

Well, i did just get back from the pub after all!

Joe K

Because Sony/MS want to control the game

As stated in an iPlayer blog yesterday, Sony and MS don't want some upstart creating a nice online television service without input from themselves.

Probably because it won't generate them any revenue (in the case of money-grabbing Microsoft), or that i'll make their own efforts look ridiculous (in the case of forever-behind-the-curve Sony).

Top security firm: Phorm is adware

Joe K

Understandable

I can see the point of anti-malware reps being miffed at this.

If your whole business model is all about protecting users from being monitored/profiled and spammed with ads, then its kind of annoying when an ISP and former malware criminal team up to implement a near unstoppable system that encompasses every user.

In that case we may as well let all the profilers have our browsing history and fight amongst themselves to inject the ads.

Nyko beats Sony to PS3 rumble controller release

Joe K

Pfffft

On Sunday i ordered a Dualshock 3 off Ebay for a mere £30, which is probably less than it'll cost when it ships over here, it arrived today. Same price off www.playasia.com too. Why wait?

Anyone still interested in this monstrosity, note that it doesn't use Bluetooth and you can't turn the PS3 on with it (my favourite couch-potato feature of the official controllers)

Bill Hicks saw where we were going

"By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing... kill yourself.

No, no, no it's just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day, they'll take root - I don't know. You try, you do what you can. Kill yourself.

Seriously though, if you are, do.

Aaah, no really, there's no rationalisation for what you do and you are Satan's little helpers. Okay - kill yourself - seriously. You are the ruiner of all things good, seriously. No this is not a joke, you're going, "there's going to be a joke coming," there's no fucking joke coming. You are Satan's spawn filling the world with bile and garbage. You are fucked and you are fucking us. Kill yourself. It's the only way to save your fucking soul, kill yourself.

Planting seeds. I know all the marketing people are going, "he's doing a joke..." there's no joke here whatsoever. Suck a tail-pipe, fucking hang yourself, borrow a gun from a Yank friend - I don't care how you do it. Rid the world of your evil fucking makinations. Machi... Whatever, you know what I mean.

I know what all the marketing people are thinking right now too, "Oh, you know what Bill's doing, he's going for that anti-marketing dollar. That's a good market, he's very smart."

Oh man, I am not doing that. You fucking evil scumbags!

"Ooh, you know what Bill's doing now, he's going for the righteous indignation dollar. That's a big dollar. A lot of people are feeling that indignation. We've done research - huge market. He's doing a good thing."

Godammit, I'm not doing that, you scum-bags! Quit putting a godamm dollar sign on every fucking thing on this planet!

"Ooh, the anger dollar. Huge. Huge in times of recession. Giant market, Bill's very bright to do that."

God, I'm just caught in a fucking web.

"Ooh the trapped dollar, big dollar, huge dollar. Good market - look at our research. We see that many people feel trapped. If we play to that and then separate them into the trapped dollar..."

How do you live like that? And I bet you sleep like fucking babies at night, don't you?"

F*ck summer!

Thats too god damn far away!

iPhone jailbreak tools updated to open firmware 1.1.4

Joe K

Just like the PSP hacker war then

So they release a device with a flashable firmware, as is the fashion, and instead of making sure the device is bugfree and finalised (like EVERY other pre-flash device) they believe the developers assurances about encryption, certifications, and unhackability.

Hmm, that just worked out fine for the PSP didn't it.

All the crap about upgrades means nothing compared to the money lost, either through piracy or contract loss.

And somewhere, some guy (or guys) decided to make the ROM a flash chip. Morons.

The BT execs should be arrested for this

Seriously, police should march them out of board rooms and off golf courses in handcuffs come Monday morning.

They can waffle on about reviews and anonymisers all they want, the very fact that your browsing history is routed to a computer called the "Profiler" located in CHINA is reason alone to sound major alarm bells here.

So will the profiler look at my bank details to see if i can afford a shiny new car or HD telly and so give me an ad for one?

Serious questions need to be answered here. Fuckers.

Mobo maker builds 'powerless' processor cooling fan

Joe K

Nifty

So the more you overclock, the faster it'll go, thus reducing the temp, so reducing the fan, so the CPU gets hotter, thus speeding up the fan, which'll cool it down, so the fan slows, and so it gets hotter, which then gets the fan going......

I'm lost here.

Boffin stacks 16 PS3s to simulate black hole collisions

Joe K

@sarah

I'd say its way faster, thanks to the SPE units, which when programmed correctly act better than a multicore processor, and the PS3 has 7 of them as well as the main CPU.

Just a few SPE's can real time raytrace, NO help from the graphics chips either:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLte5f34ya8

Once programmers get used to multithreaded game code and farming out performance enhancing methods to the SPE's, things are really gonna get interesting.

Surely there is some kind of privacy laws being breached here.

If Facebook can take a kicking from the EU courts for far less than this, i'm pretty sure BT will be hauled into the courtroom soon enough.

Maybe they think its all too technical for the courts. I'd say that its pretty much the same as them installing a trojan on their customers computers to monitor their browsing habits.

Bonkers

You'd have to be clinically insane to spend over £100 on a HD-DVD player right now.

With no new content the thing will be a doorstop within months, and then you'll have to clear it out the way for a BluRay/PS3.

Or do you like cluttering your living room with multiple boxes/wires/discs.

And please, shut up about downloads being the future. "Fair usage policies" are the future, and the present in most places, and will forever render that argument pointless.
