Web palmtop offers life-time no-limits mobile surfing for £60

Joe K

Looks like shite

Its like a cheap chinese knock-off, only not at all cheap.

Wouldn't pay over £100 for that horrible bit of kit, and do you *really* need to access the net while away from a desk, all the time?

Like mentioned, if they offered this as an app for iphone or S60 they'd get much more business.

Sanyo beams as next-gen laser cuts it for 100GB Blu-ray Disc

Joe K

Enterprise?

Theres still no way this would be used for archive purposes, 100GB is NOTHING, and they are far more delicate than just having a nice hot-swappable RAID array.

You'd have to be frigging insane to push this as a backup medium nowadays.

$236m judgment lands on mom and pop spam shop

Joe K

"Bulk Mailing 4 Dummies"

Hah ha! What an aptly named program.

They don't sound like master criminals, more like they fell for some "earn thousands from your home computer" spam themselves and wouldn't know what the hell an ISP even is.

That headline figure is a good move, even if it will never get paid, but the whole thing is a sorry state of affairs.

Its the advertisers who should pay, you can't just play dumb there, you should know how your business is being represented. If you advertise through spamming scumbags you should get financially ruined too.

Oh sweet fucking jesus

Wheres the mindbleach when you need it.

I'm sure someone thought this was funny, or ironic, or cool or something.

No, its just embarassing, everyone involved should be shot.

Wake up

They haven't done this for any other reason other than to stick it to the import companies, don't want that riff-raff making money now do we.

Also, it keeps Japan stock soley in Japan, where the populous is obliged to buy a minimum of 3 new models each, keeping the supply restricted and the rest of the world desperate until we get it next christmas.

Amazon's 'Kindle 2' spotted in the wild

Joe K

Rubbish

Who on earth needs a keyboard so badly that you want your reader ruined by one? (and the new Sony one has a touch screen keyboard, far more elegant). Its a reader, if you want to type get a bloody UMPC.

And i never understood the wireless part. Have you ever been so utterly desperate for a book that you had to download it RIGHT BLOODY NOW, instead of waiting to get home for a sync?

If so, you really have more problems that this thing can solve.

Mapping the universe at 30 Terabytes a night

Joe K

Nice article

I like the detail.

I can't help wondering though if by 2016 we'll all have 30 terabytes on our desktops.

In 2000 most of us were still on sub-gigabyte drives and the idea of picking up a terabyte HD for £90 would have been though of as witchcraft.

Seems a bit daft planning all this now, no telling where storage and processor (see the Cell) tech will be in 8 years.

Sega to launch PSP beater in 2009

Joe K
Thumb Down

Utterly unimpressed

It looks like it can do little more than your average smartphone, only without the actual phone bit.

"Mini java game", so its not actually a portable Dreamcast then, its just plays mobile phone games if we're lucky.

Screen looks wrong for movies too, and i hope that 2GB memory is expandable.

No threat to the PSP if you ask me, this is a very niche device. The phone world has learnt that portable live TV is one thing that sounds great but few people actually need, especially with our 5 crappy channels.

Sony revamps e-book Reader with reading lamp

Joe K

Info

More info here: http://www.mobileread.com/

Basically for $100 more you get a lighted border (still not sure how well that'll work compared to turning on a bedside lamp), search function from onscreen keyboard, and a fingerprint-tastic touchscreen based on some questionable swipe-pageturn tech.

Think i'll not wait for this one. I like the design of the 505 anyway more than this.

Joe K

Hang on a sec!

Whats with the stylus?

So the screen is touch sensitive? This seems to be more newsworthy than a LED light.

Need to know if this is worth importing, or just getting the 2nd gen model.

Microsoft waves updated Maps, Hotmail at customers

Joe K
Thumb Down

Spam? Loads please

I couldn't give a toss what gloss they slap over the interface, how about they just have proper spam filtering?

I signed up for a mail address just to see how long before it got spam in, was a matter of hours before the flow started.

Mail accounts become unmanagable within months, its completely useless, but the moronic suits that run Microsoft now don't want too strong spam filters in case the advertisers complain.

Kentucky commandeers world's most popular gambling sites

Joe K

If there was any doubt

HighRollersLounge.com and LuckyPyramidCasino.com have gone offline. Noticed a couple of UK sounding URLS on the Kentucky Theft List too.

Apparently there is a hearing later tonight about all this before the big seizure begins, a huge squadron of lawyers have been parachuted in to try and stop this:

EPO staff strike over patent quality

Joe K
Stop

Hmmm

If the EPO goes the way of the American Patent system we may as well just close down all the universities and declare science and innovation to be a dead concept.

Cos anything that anyone even dreams about will get patented, companies will worldwide patent any concept imaginable, in the hope that some actual clever person invents it for them so they can patent troll a fortune out the poor buggers.

Seriously, the US is fucked, lets not follow them.

Toshiba tools up for movie download future

Great, another format no-one wants

Until they offer High-def, full 7.1 DTS, downloads of BRAND NEW CINEMA releases, i'm not the slightest bit interested.

We all have our own home cinemas now, the idea of having to endure a night looking at a milkshake stained screen, in a too-loud cinema (though not loud enough to drown out all the chavs), should be over by now.

Otherwise this is just another way of renting out DRM packed movies that will be cheaper on DVD.

Should the phone not get squashed or knocked off the bed, it will be within easy reach to sleepily turn the alarm off and roll over for more sleep.

I need my phone to be across the room when it goes off, so the walk over to it wakes me up. This thing sounds about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Joe K

Destroy the US patent system

Its obvious it should be scrapped completely now, they aren't worth the paper they're printed on. They'll just patent any damn thing, and sit on it till someone actually does all the work and creates their theoretical idea. Its anti-progress.

I hope Ninty tells them to to fuck off, and pulls the Wii off US shelves to force someone somewhere to see sense.

Didn't our housing market follow the same path until recently?

Flog as many mortgages as possible, everywhere and anyhow, and worry about the impact later.

The amount of "For sale" signs i see around is growing rapidly, and the estate agent windows that were previously full of houses are now full of rented accomodation. Meanwhile the stories of record reposessions grow as people initial interest-free periods begin to run out.

Huh?

"In our experience, though, most people just stick it in their pocket, in which case having the headphone cable coming out of the bottom of the unit just seems awkward. The larger iPod Classic, in contrast, has the headphone connector on the top of the unit, which seems less clumsy to us. So does the Touch."

Umm, no, the Touch has it on the bottom too, i dunno about the classic.

It makes more sense on the bottom by far. You have it pointing down as when you pull it out it'll be in your hand and under your thumb, and having the cable on the bottom is much neater than it poking out the top (as my phone does).

And HOORAY, the old comment icons are still here!

Damn you Activision for ditching it! It looked awesome, and has all the cast in it.

As for the film, this idea was mooted about a decade ago, the idea that the 'busters would train a hip new bunch of young hip "characters".

I hope they don't go back to this idea, it sounded awful then, and it sounds worse now that "the kidz" would be spouting iPhones and spending most of their 'bustin time on Myspace.
