Windows just works ....
Tired of hearing your FUD about windows just working ....
The other day, I had to fix a computer that had a broken HDD, the HDD was completely screwed, not even readable with testdisk.
I got a new HDD and looked under that laptop and saw a sticker with a Windows 7 pro key ... I downloaded the legit iso for Windows 7 pro (digital river) and installed it ... after installation, the graphics was 800x600, no network card, no wifi, no sound ... completely unusable computer ... I boot into Linux, go to the HP site (because the linux livecd installed wifi drivers) and downloaded all the drivers for windows ... which I then installed .... Note that my HP wireless printer worked from the livecd without rebooting 2 times to install a 150mb+ of driver ....
So, again, please, those people who back the crooks in Redmond, please LEAVE the IT industry, you are making fools out of yourselves ...please, fuck off or die. Cleaner is a job for you.
Re: So bloody predictable.....
I have ardour with a Prodipe keyboard and an AVID Mbox sound card ... tried to install Protools on Windows 7, it complained about some drive label being too long, and the sound card made fuzzy noises (as in guitar distortion) ... tried it on Mac OS X (with case-sensitive file system) and I got the same fuzzy noises ... installing just the driver for the sound card worked fine, though (without pro-tools). I could not get the keyboard to work with anything else than the software provided on the CD on Windows... on Mac OS X it went like a charm ... but as I said, the sound driver was borked.
I contacted Protools about it and after some weeks gave up ... I went through some howto's on the web for Linux & ardour and have not looked back ... it works.
When it comes to games, I totally agree ... I refuse to use wine, too much dicking around ... I tried crossover, doesn't work - no direct3d support and again, I refuse to dick around - I am too old for that ... I am not into computer games, this was for the kids (probably the reason why I lacked motivation to hack it together).
Don't get me started on browser search provider and home page hijacking or toolbar hell ... I mean, seriously, even Java Runtime Environment on Windows is a trojan.
A piece of software that by default installs another, unrelated, piece of software by default is a trojan, by my standards at least.
Honestly, you get all you deserve....

Seriously, the other day I was chatting with someone who was using citrix and had a Java version on it from early 2010 ... I did not dare ask what the version of the acrobat plugin was, but that is just asking for trouble ... when I now see what you poor souls have to endure to keep your system up-to-date, I cannot withhold my smile.
Using Windows? Deserve all you get ... sorry. Absolutely no empathy, get your act together. It has been time to switch to Linux since Windows XP first came out, with Vista it was long overdue, needless to say that with Windows 8, you are beyond help.
2 reboots to install a printer driver, come on guyz, how fucked up is that ? Why do I have to unplug the USB device to install it ???? Windows is for idiots.
So, would all those who back the crooks in Redmond please leave the IT industry, you are ridiculously making fools out of yourselves. Cleaner is a job for you.
Weird, the best hackers (in the noble sense of the word) I know run Mac OS X ... I run Linux, so no fanboyism on my part - don't get me wrong ... At the company I work for, you choose your hw/OS - in fact, you have a budget. Sad thing is, though, that since we only work with big businesses and want to keep hardware consistent, if you choose Linux, you pay the Windows tax ...
NHS preps spammy mailshots advertising 'BIGGEST medical data grab in HISTORY'
others have questioned how private companies involved with the system
One thing to do: "Opt out"
How is this possible ? How can NHS IT outsource even parts of this system ? Sounds like the French car registration office who is happy to "sell" your details to private companies so they can spam you with ads for garages and shit - you can "opt out". I would be happy to opt in if I get the registration free of charge ... Noooo, same incredibly high price for everybody.
Never trust a privately held company with your medical data ... then again, we have to, when we want additional "social security" (aka private social security).
I hate this world ...
Apple slams brakes on orders of (not so cheap) plasticky iPhone 5C
Re: Good business strategy ..
They need to price 5C half of the price of a 5S, max, for it to sell ... I think they thought they wanted to hike up the price of the 5S and wanted a phone that would match the price-point of the previous high-end models ... Good news for Apple, ppl are buying the more expensive model - exactly what they want ... Now that is good business sense ... squeeze those dollars out of us.
Thing is, the business tactic worked better than anticipated, so now they have to shift manufacturing capability from 5C to 5S - better situation than expected.

MS Word deserves DEATH says Brit SciFi author Charles Stross
Re: Concur with Stross. With a couple caveats.
Ever heard of /usr/bin/diff ? Version control is another tool, but seriously, diff and patch are the two most used programs apart from vi on my box ... I write/maintain a 1800+ pages book, trust me ... as for styles, I use wiki text formatting, an awk script spits out docbook XML which I convert to the format of my liking ...
I remember working with a big software house who were using XLS files for project tracking involving several people ... I was getting modified files from 5 different people at one point, how do you merge that ?
Save as CSV, diff the buggers, patch, open in OpenOffice and save as xls ... Everybody was asking me how I manged to do it so fast ... I kept replying: "Use linux". I know, you can get the tools on windows, add them to your path and work your way around the braindead windows terminal (cmd.exe) ...
Oh, and Windows tools seem to have problems with CSV, comma-separated values, files. Some tools expect it to be TAB separated values (Excel), others semi-colon separated values (Windows contacts import wizard) ... Excel allows you to import the files, which is just plain f'ed up it should apply heuristics or at the very least ask, contacts import wizard simply refuses to load proper CSV files....

Microsoft covers Brit who penetrated Windows 8.1 with GOLD
You cannot really compare Linux with Windows in that respect ... I mean, you update windows and linux pretty much as often, Windows has you reboot 27 times a year for updates - on linux that would be 4 to 5
Linux: new kernel -> reboot
Windows: new notepad.exe patch -> reboot
Windows is the only system I know where I have to unplug a USB printer to install the driver, where the driver software needs more than one reboot - one reboot is already bad, but two ?
I seriously do not know what windows is doing in businesses ... I used it for a full month (Windows 7) and the fully updated + latest drivers could not handle hibernate mode properly or unplugging the power cord - in both cases the wifi would just go (no use disabling/enabling device - the card was "disabled" as if I had pressed the button to turn it off). The wifi would also drop every few hours, enabling/disabling the device fixes it but it sucks for online games.
Then you get these delta-search lolipop blahblah toolsbars (I see that on PC's I repair all the time), never seen that on Mac or Linux ...
Then come Patchy Tuesday, it asks for a reboot, which you can postpone twice (4 hours each, 8 hours total), then it will just reboot without warning -> you lose work so you install Linux to avoid losing work.
Seriously, Windows is gonna go! People are really tired of all this shit ...
Re: I applaud this approach
[ Microsoft have rapidly growing revenues from the console, tablet and phone businesses to more than replace any revenue losses from PCs, at least in the medium term....]
Where have you been over the last 5 years ?
Tablets and phones are losing money "real" fast, 1bn for tabs, hardly any revenue for phones, increasing ad costs and the wp will have to make up for the Nokia deal (5bn) which will take some time ... if they ever exceed 5% market share, that is, I think windows phone will be canned. Ever noticed that new phones since the deal no longer sport the Nokia brand ?
As for Xbox one ? Nobody will want that ... Problem is, back when the Xbox 360 came out it was equivalent in perf to a high end PC .... Xbox One is equivalent to an average PC, as in, you can get a better performing PC for less + PC's now have HDMI out - no issues hooking that up to the 50". Games have more features on PC's, ever heard of mods ? The second hand game scandal will not help either although they changed their mind on the subject.
Re: I applaud this approach
Haver you not noticed the dramatic fall in ie market share ? Have you not see the ads on TV for ie ? Why are they spending millions on promoting their browser (which they give away) ?
The more people move from ie to anything else will be less frightened of trying linux ...
Windows 8 fans out-enthuse Apple fanbois
Just imagine, at school, your prick of an offspring goes ahead and tells all his mates that by using his WinPh0ne credentials they can play the latest Assassin's Creed. He shares it and then, all of a sudden, daddy gets $1620 charged against his credit card, as 81 of the friend friends of your sons friends are using his credentials ... sounds like a really "cool" feature indeed.
Then again, the offspring needs to find 81 friend friends of friends that use WinPh0ne, good luck with that when you live outside of Redmond, Washington!

Re: to the extent that Microsoft deserve criticism?
@Thad
Why just the dreadful early versions ? True, w2k was good - by MS standards, that is - but anything before that was crap and anything after it was bloatware, with the notable exceptions of Windows Me, Vista and 8, which are crap (latter two being both bloated crap).

I sincerely hope someone will stop them from starting that death-machine ....

Surface Mini on shelves NEXT YEAR – and it will run Windows RT
LostALLFaith: Will they still be around next year?
Maybe, but they lost $1bn with the RT disaster and just bought a $5bn Titanic ... Windows Phone loses more money every day and Xbox One looks like a Fail on launch ... they can earn as much as they like, if they are throwing more money out of the window than they make, they are doomed ... and they do not look like they will dump Windows RT & Phone, their only option to stay afloat....
Apple blings up new iMac with latest Intel chips, next-gen Wi-Fi
Re: CD/DVD drive
For all those saying floppies are a thing of the past, I have to disagree; I need both 5.14 and 3.5 floppies regularly (read: daily) for my business (so the iMac is out for me anyway; can't reasonably expect to use floopy drive via a usb connection). The floppy drive would be minimum spec for my expectations. So I side with those who agree that without a floppy drive, it's not an all-in-one.
Seriously, why is USB 3.0 not suitable for BD burning ?
