Note to Mozilla: We don't get the Firefox billboards

Bilgepipe

Clearly

>>> Clearly you haven't seen their tax status

No, I haven't, and I still can't see anything which claims that Mozilla or its browser "does" anything that can be called "good" in the charitable sense, which is the point the article missed - as did you it seems.

Bilgepipe

Hmm

Someone has misinterpreted the "good" in the Firefox ad campaign, methinks. Mozilla makes no charitable claims whatsoever.

So if it were you, you wouldn't sue Sony?

Epic, epic fail, on every level.

Bilgepipe

Eh?

So you think it's acceptable for Sony to have stored the entirety of it's customers personal data, including passwords and credit card details, in an unencrypted format on a network hacked by some kid in his basement/some guy from Anonymous? Wow.

Capitalism works fine, in principal. The problem is greed, and the two seem to be inextricably linked.

Windows phones send user location to Microsoft

Bilgepipe

Hmm

>>> Add Microsoft Windows Phone 7 to the list of mobile operating systems that silently transmit the precise physical location of the device back to a central database.

Where's the evidence of each OS provider doing this? So far it appears only Microsoft are (predictably enough, for them) including a unique device ID - presumably you've seen some proof of Apple and Android also storing the device/owner ID in their database?

Apple sued over iPhone location tracking

Bilgepipe

Tracking?

>>> There is a date, time and location. If you don't call that tracking, what the hell do you call that?!?!?

A list of dates, times and locations. Without knowledge of who the data relates to - and what they were doing at each point - it's not an awful lot of use. Unless you lose the phone or it's stolen of course, in which case a list of locations is the least of your worries.

I love how Tesco knows what brand of toilet paper I buy and no-one bats an eyelid, but the fact that Apple or any Android implementer might be able to work out approximately where some of their customers may have been standing the other day is suddenly a big deal.

Sanity saver: Fedora 15 answers Ubuntu's Unity

Bilgepipe

Agreed.

Forcing the likes of Unity and GNOME3 onto people is going to cost customers. Desktop and touch UIs are too different to merge into one - Apple proved this with iOS and it's why they won't release a touch Mac. A touch-optimised UI operated with a mouse is a kludge.

Here's hoping someone forks GNOME2.

Even Microsoft is only just as bad as that.

Bilgepipe
Gates Horns

Ooooohhhhh...

>>> The company has closely analyzed people's search behavior to determine what would best differentiate the Bing experience from Google.

These are the people which closely analysed people's word processing behaviour and came up with Clippy, about the fourth most retarded thing Microsoft has ever produced. I don't think Google has much to worry about.

Same thing we do with Neil Armstrong et al - revere them as heroes in the same way. His statue will be on Mars one day, along with Armstrong, Shepard, etc.

Crap Products

Doesn't matter how much you know or don't know about Microsoft, their products are still big fat steaming piles of farm-fresh manure.

Personally at this point I don't give them the benefit of any doubt, because they can't release anything that doesn't suck in one way or another, be it through reliability, stability or just plain stupid design (Windows "Virtual Store" folders - designed by a moron(tm)).

Awful.

Indeed. It's amazing that MS has the sheer brass balls to even consider doing this.

Almost as amazing as someone being either blinkered or stupid enough to downvote your post.

Mozilla to ship Firefox 4 on 22 March

Bilgepipe

Too Little, Too Late

I pretty much gave up with FF when the biggest New Feature they could tack on was the useless Themes option. One word - WHY?

It's become steadily more bloated and unstable, and the bug which clears edit fields while you're typing - which affects Ubuntu and Mac versions - makes it effectively unusable.

Chrome all the way for me, until Mozilla do some serious bug fixes and plug some memory leaks.

No Improvement

>> I fail to see the improvement.

There isn't one. The browser will only run as fast as your connection anyway, the fact that it can draw your pr0n 0.00038 milliseconds faster than another browser because it's using DirectX is meaningless.

In fact this whole press release smells of desperation on the part of MS, who don't have any really compelling reasons for people to use IE over any other higher-quality browser; they even describe dumping nearly 50% of their user base as a selling point.
