The print cost is more than that. You have to factor in:
The person that is printing it off,
The person that is filling the printer with toner and paper,
The person that is photocopying them,
The person that is servicing the photocopier,
The receptionist that is letting the photocopier service man in,
The security guard that is monitoring the reception,
The manager to authorise all the spending,
The quality assurance group that checks the staff are making efficiency savings,
The base cost of a printer,
Of course what they should have done was simply said they were looking at ecological concerns and moving towards a paperless office.
As a software developer myself I understand why you might think that using the OS multimedia framework would be a good idea. However if you were Mozilla, creating a cross-platform multimedia application. How could you best ensure that Firefox can play videos?
A Windows patch to fix a vulnerability could break your video playback and the end user is just going to see that Firefox does not work any more.
Also that framework (DirectX / Gstreamer / QuickTime) is actually a moving target, you'd have to have 3 experts creating and maintaining a cross-platform translation layer for all versions of your application.
Its a balance between stability and features, ideally everything would be from the underlying platform but for stability you bring it into your application and under your control.
Your only going to get about 6 months guarantee under current legislation.
I see reviews of this device from 2003 so getting 7 years out of a product these days is not bad.
If you don't like the throw away society we have then write a letter to an MP or something. Expecting a manufacturer to do something is just wishful thinking really.
Why is the logical conclusion that the fungus is controlling the ants?
More logical is that an ant knows that it is ill and does not want others to become ill so moves as far away as it can. Then funds a safe place under a leaf.
Sounds more logical than a fungus controlling brain function. However its probably more news worthy when presented this way.
Think about it from a brains perspective. It now has to work harder to recognise a button because the colours behind it might be different based on what is currently behind it. Humans are great at recognising colours but not if they keep changing.
Its like the ribbon bar in Office 2007. It lowers the learning curve by showing you everything but your eye's have to scan further because of the large icons.
For those that use computers every day this just quickens the pace at which we get eye strain.
