So long then, Windows 2000

Al fazed
WTF?

2K ? It's still here !

and since I disconnected it from t'internet, it runs smoother than ever.

I've had my gripes about 2K over the last 10 years, but it's still my OS of choice for getting the majority of my work done on a daily basis.

Surfin' n eMail are handled by OpenSuse 11 on a 10 year old box. My 3 kids play on and everyone else uses an XP'd P4 machine - which I use as a base line for fixing other peoples PC problems, as XP has had loads of 'em. Still, that box is about 9 years old and it has taken a lot of stick.

IMHO, Linux on the desktop still has a long way to go, unfortunately.

It's easy to set up now, but WELL flakey in the field, sadly, both Ubuntu up to 9.0 and OpenSuse 11 suffer.

Is there a GUI Linux distro that doesn't ?

Seriously, if there is, please let me know. And cut the bull shit.

I do NOT recommend Linux to the majority of my clients.

While 2K still sets the grade for functionality in my world.

What was that about MAC ?

As far as I am concerned, with Apple MACs it's a case of, F*ck the scenery mate I'm here to work !

Yawn !

Why didn't they fix the printing bug first ?

I'd rather be able to print documents properly from Open Office.

Anyway, GStreamer doesn't work on my OpenSuse 11 install, oh and if it is installed, YAWN YAST cannot find it, and when found in the available packages, it cannot be installed either.

God job I am able to use Microsoft and Apple software when I want to listen to music, or print documents.

Linux

Can you stand the insults

when you use the forums ?

I got fed up with standing in penguin shit whilst trawling for solutions that just aren't there.

How happy am I running a PC that won't; play MP3's even after installing the codex, fucks up printing documents from Open Office, shows Flash ads in Seamonkey but not Google maps !

Maybe Ubuntu 10 is better than earlier versions, but I don't really care any more. I wasted far too much time and still saw my OS disappear, far too many times for a "stable" release.

Compared to Windows, I was saving money, but I was burning far too much midnight oil, just trying to fix basic things like getting music files to play, without flaws.

I'm now suffering the slings and arrows of OpenSuse 11 rather than buy a new machine with another Microsoft mash-up OS, but OpenSuse 11 is still wanting when considering the basic requirements of most Microsoft Windows users.

Maybe like MS, only the latest hardware will comply ? But I doubt that is the reason.

I think that when any Linux distro finally does get it together and provides what the Microsoft and Apple user wants, without quibble, be that MP3, M4A, or whatever, flying the flags and lighting the fireworks should be saved until then.

Otherwise, there is the chance that people will think that the penguin brotherhood are just crying wolf.

Again !

As an administrator of several Windose boxen, I seem to remember having the ability to make a choice over which MS Updates to install and which not, but that was quite a while ago.

Going to penguin tastic forums to sort out problems, is to be insulted by penguin heads because you use Windows.

This is not the way to support users.

What a load of Bull Shit and hog wash this OS is.

I have lost complete installations just doing security updates.

Dual booting Ubuntu has always let me down, eventually the Boot Loader goes missing !

And unless you are a penguin, reinstalling the OS from scratch is all you have left ?

Or the f*cking forums ?

Ubuntu certainly isn't ready for desktop use as a working business system.

IMHO, It's still a developers testing ground.

I think I'll stay with OpenSuse, it hasn't crashed once in 8 weeks since install, which is more than I can say for any Ubuntu release since 5.04.

Most films they are involved with and that I sometimes get to see, usually turn out to be rank remakes of tales of yore. Everything is drowned in very poor CGI, making a film appear like a very long comic strip ! DURR !

Where went the art and creativity ? Seems like a visual cul de sac to me.

Most music I hear these days is the same, just a rank remake of crappy pop tunes, once churned out by bands with names like "the Beatles", which in reality were once enjoyed only by grannies and very very young children, oh yeah and my son with Downs Syndrome.

Mind you, some of the Beatles T-shirts doing the rounds are pretty groovey, and they are not free, and I'll bet that "the band" members do not get any royalties off these. AAAR !

All the stuff I get to listen to or watch these days is usually available free of charge, NOT via P2P, but mainly as it is made to be distributed free of copyright.

I'll bet it don't play MP3's straight from the box !

If Ubuntu's earlier incarcerations are anything to go by, it's all peguin fluff and not a grain of truth about greater security, stability, Windows desktop replacement, blah, bloody blah, blah blah,

Look what I'm getting at is this,

Firefox is totally fucked up when running under any sort of Linux, (in my experience since November last.)

Seamonkey is rather more than a little wonky, when compared to the same app when running under Microshaft OSes.

If you need a browser that works under Linux, you will have to go looking for Opera.

Don't try to play your MP3s, your .wav files or your movies either, (in my experience)

Flash adds on this web site kill browsers dead after 5 minutes, under Ubuntu or OpenSuse.

And no it isn't the box, as everything worked just fine under the horror that was Windows XP.

And if you don't mind a failed update trashing your master boot record so the poor old PC doesn't know where to start afterwards, go ahead,

WTF?

@Jamie

Same as Jamie,

But my problem is because I'm running Linux as opposed to Windows.

HONEST !

I had to ditch Ubuntu, no tell a lie, it ditched itself during a software update. I couldn't read the register because the adds took my humble P4 2.2 Ghz machine back to the old PII days.

In all truthfullnes, OpenSuse is only slightly better, in that the adds take up about 50% CPU cycles when using SeaMonkey to read the register, compared to the 100% CPU cycles with Ubuntu.

PS the same machine works without a hitch running Windows XP !

So go figure ?

FLASH is still a load of bandwidth grabbing shite.

Just waking up !

to the fact that we live and breathe Police state daily.

Obviously it's the sleeping politician syndrome again.

Yesterday, my 17 year old daughter went to the newly refurbished Ashmolean Museum, as member of a party of students on an organised and supervised Art college trip. This should be a fantastic experience for any young person who shows interest in our cultural heritage. However, the day was marred again and again by security staff who made their presence very visible through out the duration of the visit. One guy even went as far as standing in the middle of the doorway to one of the rooms. His body language presented a posture intended to disuade my daughter from entering. If she had been tripping or stoned this may have simply been paranoia on her part, but she assures me that she wasn't. The bloke even went as far as to glower at her angrily, as she slid passed him through the entrance into the room.

As if there hasn't been enough spent on the surveilance equipment newly installed in this public building, we are still being harassed by the low paid individuals who have their daily, petty, national news fed prejudices to bear in life, and use their positions of relative superiority to "lord it" over what ever individual crosses their path. All this surveilance just teachers us to be suspicious of everyone. Assume they are a terrorist, a yobbo, a thief, a junky, a Benefits thief.

We are already here in a loop of 1984 which has been reiterating itself ever since.

And this guy has just woken up to the fact !

Well blow me down, the English cannot find the noses on their faces !

If I were not English this would seem like an insult to the English.

Being English I have ample clear evidence that this is true right across our culture, politics, law, marketing, fiscal policies.

In this case, the results showed that the identical twins were, "no more likely to share a G-spot than non-identical twins".

Which says more about our superstious beliefs surrounding twins, than it proves or otherwise anything about a womans biological system.

For F*cks sake, the avarage British man has no clues as to the workings a woman's mind. So deliberating about the G spot might be better conducted and have more success if the research was done in bed, rather than in a lab.

By the way, I do know where the G spot is and if any of our female readers would like a hand to find theirs, get in touch do. This PC does not have one, definitely ! But then neither does a MAC and Linux also definitely not, up to now anyways.

As a daily user of the PC, I have to state categoricaly, there is nothing interesting or exciting about having to go looking for the application menus that the egg heads have just moved to somewhere else, or marketing types have had removed altogether.

Mind you, Ubuntu Linux is't a great deal better in this, it simply costs me ONLY the earning curve, which is enough, when you just want to do some work.

I've been trying since version 6 and still encountering problems which mean I cannot use this as my every day desktop, even though I would really love to. With my current Ubuntu 9.04 install, I am dragging my arse through the mud as the display is falling apart, close, minimise and maximise buttons are suddenly missing from every GUI application I have been using. Control panel is today just a white sace on the screen.

I really really wish I was one of those people who never ever have any problems with Linux, but I am not. I am one of those people who have lots of problems each time they try a new release, in the hope the bugs in the last release will have been fixed. Unfortunately, for would-be Linux Ubuntu users, (I can't speak about the other distro's) Linux developers are just like Microsoft's developers, the fasion is not for fixing stuff that's broke, just making more broken stuff.
