Australia unbans the internet

sT0rNG b4R3 duRiD

No to filter.

I propose that we oppose this more loudly. I don't think a filter should go up. I think some of the reasons behind it are noble - stop kiddie porn etc...

but... for those whom remain unconvinced... (I reckon if you're here that's not an issue but I don't want to assume) hear me out....

Why could this filter affect me?

1. A sufficiently sensitive filter may not be sufficiently specific, and block all kinds of stuff.. It may make the everyday browsing experience we take for granted slightly irritating...

2. And of course an insensitive filter will be useless...

3. And what sort of filter will it be? something that adds significantly to network latency? I don't want to sound selfish here, but one consideration I am seriously worried about are my 'game ping times'... it's bad enough I have to connect to US based servers sometimes, but to have yet another speed bump...

4. Lastly who or what decides gets filtered? As it is, there is a little uncertainty as to what constitutes 'extreme pr0n'.... And how often will goal posts change

5. Who watches these people in (4)... what else could they get up to?

No, it's clearly a noble idea, but difficult to implement.

After all, you could go down the slippery slope and say that normal mail needs to be filtered as well. Or should be filtered as well. I know it is not the same but it is not too dissimilar in terms of what I would consider an invasion of privacy.

More efforts should be put in place dealing with the underying issues instead:

1) child molesters and sex abuse - are we doing enough here to deal with the offenders? How well are the cases worked up?

2) children and their, quite frankly, incredulous exposure to the mass media at such young ages these days that the mind boggles... Kids these days are so precocious it's frankly frightening. For example I see toys and clothes these days prepubescent girls buy that I would never have dreamed would have been sold or worn by teenagers in my time.... Call me conservative and uptight, sure... how do we deal with this?

I contend these issues are not going to be solved by an internet filter....

You "configure" "the machine" every time you feel you want to. At least you don't have some dozy bunch of twits in Redmond or Cupertino dictating to you how it must be done.

Getting it "right" isn't the point, sometimes.

What is "right" anyways?

Getting it exactly (or close to) the way you want it one day and finding out the next day you want it the other way and having the capability to change?

The journey is the reward. (Wow, I wonder who has a book with that title...)

Honest to god, I don't know what these are for, but as you can tell the abuse potential is there.

They are probably meant as science toys, but the people that abuse them cause so much heck that these days it's so hard to buy a laser conference pointer these days or even one of those new fangled laser things to align stuff for your DIY projects down under here.

Re: There are excruciatingly few x86 developers...

"I loved developing on the A1200. Every part of the system could be fully understood, down to the last clock cycle. There are excruciatingly few x86 developers who can lay claim to the level of knowledge that quite many Amiga developers had about their hardware."

Maybe I am just paraphrasing you when I say that was possible only because the Amiga platform THEN was a very small and _constant_ platform.

The same cannot be said about today's average 'pc gaming box'

The hardware has grown more complex.

And that in itself is an understatement.

Even the cpu cannot be assumed to be the same across the board and one optimisation for one may be less desirable for another. While we are on that, ("last clock cycle"), as a whole 68ks of the amiga era were also incredibly more 'deterministic' than the current complex out-of-order jobs we have now.

This is just CPU's alone.

But all points taken and yes, there is a lot to be said for being close to the metal.

But at what cost?

(Naturally I deplore cruft in OSs as much as you do and I reckon these big corporations like M$ do not decruft their OS's enough to be honest (or even worse, nor do they allow you as the end user to do so!), but you gotta see that OS's these days are sometimes big because of the way hardware's become these days).

You are absolutely spot on.

I have been an anti-intel zealot for a while but really the sun really appears to have set on ppc's as a viable high end bleeding edge desktop cpu. Your current average intel box (or amd) with an average video card will probably give you more horsepower for less.

My next machine (for messing, mind you) will be either a 6 core AMD or an i7, with a mid range nVidia cuda capable video card ( or an ATI alternative whichever appears most attractive at the time).

Plus...

Apple lifts iPhone code ban (for chosen few)

sT0rNG b4R3 duRiD
WTF?

PS3 and xboxen

What makes you think these platforms are not 'locked down'?

Even if they weren't you do realize the only common thing they share is the in order ppc64 cores. They are vastly different beasts.

If companies want to create code on one platform and do a half arsed port to another (PS3s seem to get shafted that way), that's not going to stop the same thing happening in iPhone like devices locked down or otherwise, imho.

However, with Apple actually governing what apps look like now, those ports may never even materialize. Or even...

Steve: "We don't like the look of your foo app ui's, Fuznub, the button shapes... the positioning and layout... Smells too much of M$"

Fuznub: "But it's a direct port of my foo windoze program. Users expect it to look the same"

Steve: "Change it, it's not like it's a big deal"

...weeks later

Steve: "Err.. we don't like the ui of your shipping foo app, Fuznub, it's too simple... bit too much like our own bar App... Too Apple! Users may get confused and buy your foo product instead of our bar one. We get less money that way. You gotta change it..."

I'll try some common sense.

Apple likes only signed approved apps to run on the iPhone/Pad etc right? Else currently you need to jailbreak it and with that risk further hassle with OS updates etc.

Why? They like control, maybe they see it as a way of preventing malware. Whatever. They want control.

Why not just have 2 tiers of runnable apps and GIVE the user the CHOICE?

Tier 1: Appstore apps with the jobs mark of quality and stamp of approval (yeah right)

Tier 2: Unsigned apps. Non-appstore apps. Could be something you just rolled up 5 mins ago. This option could be disabled per user's desire (for perceived security, fanboism whatever)

That way no one need jailbreak their phone to run whatever they like.

Of course maybe they have some sort of financial reason that keeps them from wanting a solution like that.

I won't buy an iPhone etc because of how it's locked down and this article just goes on to prove it. However, a compromise like what I am suggesting could see me buy an iPhone.

Apple, ball's in your court.

But you won't do this will you? Not with that w4nk3r in charge.

As a matter of interest.

By far and large, at least as far as WoW is concerned, I believe Social Engineering to be the main source of compromised accounts.

Unfortunately if these guys get your email address, they will spam you with emails that look almost convincing to some that look clearly fake. These direct you to a fake website (ie, something like bl!zzard.com which your eye may not catch the first time round if you are not careful) and there you go.

Apart from that you will often get in-game messages from other characters about special offers, some even purporting to be GM's. (Hint: if you were ever messaged by a GM, you'd KNOW they were a GM and not some plain vanilla toon).

Apart from that hiring someone to 'level' your toon or get you rare bind-on-pickup items is also a sure fire way of getting yourself pwned, as obviously, you need to surrender access of your account to these folks for the said transaction to happen.

I have certainly come across players that have had this happen to them. They usually target, as one might imagine, the more naive, trusting and.. I am assuming mainly younger player population that may not necessary know any better.

So... as always, a bit of paranoia is good for you!

What's the difference?

Firstly, all those restrictions are bad. I oppose all of them. Having said that on a gaming console which was never meant to run anything else but DRM'ed games (the Sony PS3 is an exception here), that is somewhat more acceptable. Still bad, but more acceptable.

The iPhone or iPad is a mobile computing device and what this means is subject to interpretation. I interpret it as being a mobile computer that I should have full freedom use as I see fit.

IMHO, that means I should be able to easily write and run any arbitrary code on it. Given an iphone is meant to be a personal device, if I bought one I would be doing at least some of my daily computing on it. The ability to run arbitrary code as desired is TO BE EXPECTED. IMHO you should not have to go thru' some convoluted process, pay apple more money, and still have a hobbled means of customising your kit.

This is absolutely LAME. What are apple going to do next? DRM OS X apps?

This is why, despite the wonderful GUI the iPhone has I have boycotted it.

I vote with my feet.

(as an aside, I am also boycotting the PS3).
