Re: No portrait-mode?

The Asus can do portrait mode as far as I'm aware.

PGP, TrueCrypt-encrypted files CRACKED by £300 tool

probedb

Useful at all?

How is this of any use to anyone? I'm probably being brain dead but being as it gets the key from memory so you'd have to have made someone enter the password in the first place?

Hibernate is a non-issue as you just don't use it.

20 years of GSM digital mobile phones

probedb

My S2 goes days between charging. Depends what you mean by occasional use. It's never turned off. I have a profile app and that turns stuff on and off throughout the day.

probedb

I loved my Nokia 7210 :)

Google stiffs Samsung on price, now wireless charging too

probedb

Re: Yeah it's cheaper

You can always get an S3 if you really want one, it'll only cost £200 for the reader.

Will you soon be fingering your seven-incher?

probedb

Nexus 7?

So the completely fictional iPad mini is mentioned many, many times but the Nexus 7 not once?

4K vs OLED: and the winner is...

probedb

Re: 1080p?

Precisely, most people don't have 1080p sets with net access, a fraction of the people I know have full 1080p sets and a fraction of those have one with net access.

Blocks of flats?

So how will this work then?

Ring every flat in a building until someone answers? ;)

Wholemeal?

That's just so very wrong with a bacon sarnie.

Re: Very strange behaviour indeed

Not really, you did read the "for advertising purposes" bit didn't you?

NASA's $2.5bn Curiosity rover: An Apple PowerBook on wheels

probedb

Really?

They both had a PowerPC processor so that makes it an Apple Powerbook?

It also has wheels so I guess it's also a Ferrari because they have wheels too.

Apple seeks whopping $2.525bn Samsung patent payout

probedb

Re: Lost profits?

You're not getting the point of this are you? How are Samsung a knock of of Apple?

Explain please.

probedb

Re: Hey, this is progress

Sorry, Apple innovated what exactly? The tablet design....erm, pretty sure that's common sense it definitely isn't innovative and was around before Apple released the iPad......slide to unlock? Pretty sure that was just thrown out in a UK court?

Why do Apple sorts seem completely oblivious to Apple's complete lack of innovation these days? What next, they invented the phone....and electricity.

Dropbox brings in crack team to probe spam leakage

probedb

They're the same emails as the linkedin/lastfm ones and it only went to my dropbox forwarder.

BT to fibre up another 98 exchanges, puffs 'FTTP on demand' offer

probedb

Fantastic

So pretty much every single Sheffield suburb and surrounding area will have or is getting fibre yet the city centre still isn't even on the 'we might be thinking about it' list.

How does this work again?

Brits get to fondle Google Nexus 7 slab in just a fortnight

probedb

"but just a 1280 x 800 HD screen and no rear camera."

You've seen the price right?

And the dot pitch of the screen is the same/similar to the retina display on the Macbook Pro.

Ten... celeb headphones

FAIL

Re: Oh no! Not 'The Beats'!

MP3 is not crap. Maybe you should do some listening tests and publish those to prove you can actually tell the difference between properly encoded MP3s and the source material before stating audiophile nonsense.

probedb

Custom molds

For the price of some of these you can get proper 2/3 way custom molded IEMs. Why would you pay extra for something just because it has someone's name on it?

LinkedIn dials 911 on password mega-leak hackers

probedb
Holmes

Coincidence?

This just reminded me of two (nearly) identical bits of spam I got a couple of weeks ago before all this kicked off. I have different emails for each site so I know where spam likely started.

One was to my last fm email and one to my linked in.....coincidence? I think not, it also implies that this data has been around before this was revealed?

Ten... Freeview HD 42-47in TVs

probedb
FAIL

Panasonic TX-P42ST50

wiggers the ST30 is last years model.

However it doesn't alter the fact the ST50 is probably the best TV you can buy for under a grand and Reg Hardware completely ignores it.

Strong ARM: The Acorn Archimedes is 25

probedb

Memories:)

My dad bought an A310, then we got an 80MB HDD for it, then we got an A5000, then dad got a RiscPC and upgraded to a StrongARM with the PC card as well. Finally when I was a student what else was I supposed to spend my money on ;)

BASIC V was amazing, I believe the whole module would fit into the cache on a StrongARM so it ran interpreted BASIC ridiculously fast.

Arcam rPac

probedb

But companies like FiiO make much more fully featured headphone amp/DACs than this for less money. I bought an E7 because I have sensitive IEMs and my work PC output is too noisy.

Don't be silly about ABXing, The Reg are just another What Hi-Fi? when it comes to audio reviews, i.e. to be avoided and ignored ;)

Google Drive stalls on LAUNCH DAY

probedb

Same for Windows users, I just visited the link and got the same message.

Browsium rescues HMRC from IE6 – and multimillion-pound bill

probedb

So crutches for IE6 then?

Kind of like what HP have done with Quality Center?

IE6 native or IE8/9 with a helper app type thing. Hopefully Ion is better than HPs method :)

BT fibre-to-the-cabinet rollout penetrates 73 more exchanges

probedb

I really don't understand these plans

We'll do all the surrounding areas of Sheffield but the city centre, nah we're not bothering.

March release for Samsung Galaxy S II Android 4.0 update

probedb

So will this actually be dependent on the mobile operator? I don't want to have to wait for O2 to push it out or I'll still be here next March waiting.

The sub versions of 2.3 have all been available through Keis.

BT reveals ultra-fast cable blowing plan for homes, biz

probedb

Just getting Infinity in Sheffield city centre would be a good start.

O2 leaks 3G users' mobile numbers to every website visited

probedb

Plus

O2 want you to pay £1 for the privilege of viewing any sites they deem unsuitable across their mobile network. Even if you've been a customer for 5+ years and you're blatently old enough.

Sony SVR-HDT1000 Freeview+ HD DVR

probedb

@s.pam please tell me where I can get a full Freesat setup and a Humax box for £175. A HDR-FOXT2 costs £270 on it's own, a FOXSATHD1 is £299?

Fans goad Valve for Half-Life 3 gen

probedb

Some people have too much time on their hands

If your life revolves around needing to know when the next Half Life instalment comes out or not you need to get out a bit more.

Channel 5 snubs Freeview HD again

probedb

Film4 HD?

Maybe if we had something like Film4 in HD it'd be more useful? Even ITV 3 HD would be better than Channel 5 in HD ;)

The BBC Micro turns 30

probedb

Model A

My dad still has his Model A upgraded with an extra 16K of RAM :) We also had an A310, then an A5000 and finally a RiscPC.

Don't buy my new £210 box set - Elvis Costello

probedb

NIN?

Surely the NIN route was the exact opposite? You could get the stuff for free legally but could get different paid for versions if you want.

This is not what is happening with this release.

Ten... Blu-ray disc players

probedb

Oppo BDP-93

The BDP-95 is the audiophile version of the 93, it just has better DACS. The 93 is maybe £400 cheaper too!!

RISC OS

I remember writing a .wad file editor for RISC OS to change everything :) Ahh them were the days.

Panasonic opens TV app developer programme

probedb

Stupid Gemstar guide?

Will it be possible to write a TV guide for it that doesn't show adverts and cuts the TV audio/picture when I use it?

BT cheerfully admits snooping on customer LANs

probedb

How would this work?

My dad got a letter and hasn't had them plugged in since he first got them years ago. Since then he's even changed routers. A MAC scan isn't going to help as they've never been plugged into the new router.

I very much doubt this is how they knew to send the letters. They'll just know who had them when they sent them out surely?

Google rolls out fix for Android security threat

O2

I guess we'll get this on O2 phones sometime in the next century then....

Santander blames Firefox 4 for website fail

probedb
Thumb Down

You have to wonder...

...who the developers are that manage to build websites that only work in certain browsers?

In this day and age if they can only make a public facing site work in a single browser they shouldn't be allowed to call themselves developers.

Firefox 4 debuts: The last kitchen sink release

probedb

Now uses even more memory!

Well since upgrading it's eating twice as much memory as it used to :/ I'm sure I must have a bad extension somewhere.

The plus side is it's so much faster :D

Play.com spam points to malware downloads

probedb

Nothing here?

No spam emails or messages from play and I've been registered for years.....with a play specific email address as well.

Windows 7 customers hit by service pack 1 install 'fatal error' flaws

probedb
WTF?

No problems here

Updated both my machines (64-bit) when SP1 came out and had zero problems since.

probedb

So what's changed?

Has Sony suddenly changed something in the PS3 that LG are now able to claim for?

Humax adds BBC iPlayer to Freeview HD DVR

probedb

Freesat + Freeview HD

I'd still like Humax to do a combo recorder to get the best of both worlds.

Consumers urged to step up wireless security

Sky routers

Someone should maybe tell Sky to let users change from the crappy 8 character password they supply you with.

Letting users have the admin username/password for their routers would help.

BBC rebuilds Civilisation in HD

I wonder if they kep the correct aspect ratio or zoomed stuff in like they did with World At War?

Android bugs let attackers install malware without warning

probedb

O2 update?

So I guess a fix will be rolled out by O2 in 2014 then? ;)

Firefox 4 beta 7 hits 'spectacular list of crashes' roadblock

probedb

@JaitcH

Instead of them telling you why not install the Compatibility Reporter and help them test by reporting which ones don't work even when enabled?

I've not had any crashes with b6 but a few addons still don't work even using the compatibility mode.

Brits not buying into Freeview HD

probedb

That would be....

....because it's not available in my area so why would I buy into Freeview HD yet?

Vodafone issues real Froyo update for HTC Desire

probedb
Thumb Down

O2

Yet it's going to take O2 an additional month to check that their splash screen loads ok before they'll let us Desire owners get 2.2....sigh.
