Fourth Amendment?

What is it, and what does it amend?

@Huh?

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" B. Franklin

As already indicated, I'm not sure what the 4th amendment is, but I get the general gist of the article. If you want your phonecalls to be tapped at will, I hope you never have to fight a divorce case; complain about your local politicians; criticise your government or make a drunken joke over the phone.

On the other hand, I rather hope you do all these things and are subjected to the full force of an unnecessary invasion of privacy.

Where's the IT angle?

I think many of our 'WTIA' posts are meant to be humourously sarcastic i.e. taking the piss. Sadly, we don't have the emoticons for 'taking the piss' in the comments section.

I suggest that we (the readers with a sardonically inclined funny-bone) desist with the WTIAs, and then we will know when to pour scorn on those poor, jocularly-challenged fools who persist in posting the aforementioned WTIA.

while we're about it, I'm getting a little bored with the Paris Hilton references, too. Let's pick on britney :-)

Pay particular attention to the baby-bio at the end of the article.

TorrentSpy shuts doors to America

@Reason

Hmm, interesting idea there: anywhere americans visit is subject to US law. Does this mean we'll have to ban americans from the rest of the world to stop this? Excellent!!

The Reg is a Tech/News Site

Could we keep the proselytising to the sunday schools, please? Most of us don't care what the christians (or Muslims, Jews, Hindus or anyone else) think of us, and we really don't need to preached to in the comments page of a story about the stupidity of some people.

Bloody "Big Brother" Government

"It is the government's view that individuals involved in these arrangements should pay tax on what is, in substance, their own income and that the legislation should clearly provide for this.

"The government will therefore bring forward proposals for changes to legislation to ensure this is the case."

This sounds just like me and my brothers as children: as soon as I thought I was losing a game, I'd decide to change the rules - I'm eldest brother, it's my game, and you can't win!!!

Why can't they come up with one simple rule and stick to it? Perhaps Everybody and everything pays 30% of income. No allowances, no exceptions, no misunderstanding. Oh, and no tax lawyers :-)

USB goes Wireless

Brutus

It's back to front

Just looked at the D-Link hub. It works backwards. What I want is wireless USB dongles I can plug into all the peripherals I have, and they talk wirelessly to the hub which then talks wirelessly to the pc. Or would that hub bit be redundant?

Anyway, all the current offering does is remove one wire between PC and hub. Not really worth it, imho.

Textbooks

One of the major bonuses of this program that Ashley _so_ artfully flames is to provide access to the textbooks of the world. We can't manage to provide books for schools even in the UK without the help of major supermarket chains!

As for the general tone of the article- well, I've always thought Ashley's 'reporting' of slightly less than the high standard we get from the UK based reporters, but I generally blame that on his being in California, where everything is wonderful and you can look down upon the rest of the world from your Olympian Techno-Utopia, where everyone would rather argue about the relative merits of processor speed and iPhone battery-life than think about people struggling against economic and cultural adversity.
