Cool!
Nice to see that our very own war-boffins read the Reg.

So a 40% global market share is meaningless? And the fact that Nokia sells into markets that RIM and Apple don't makes this more so? I don't really understand how you can justify this.
BTW, Nokia don't 'give away' their phones on contract; the network providers buy them from Nokia and then amortise the cost across the life of the contract.
Mate, I think you're being a little naive here.
Firstly, you are assuming that this is only to support geolocation; Google are well known for using any data that comes their way to improve their advertising service.
and secondly, the scanner is part of the googlemobile, so battery-life is not an issue. Thus, active scanning is easily achievable.
Erm, you don't have to have flashy, new features. You've said it yourself: you can turn them off. Ubuntu has the bling because it is in direct competition with Windows and OSX and needs to look as pretty. Fedora has a different target market.
If you really want to 'do REAL work', you can. FFS, you could even just use a terminal window or even do without windows managers altogether. And if you're so incensed by the lack of a standard theme, write one! :)
With the truck idea, you're basically taking energy from the truck to power the fans. The truck then has to burn more diesel to make up for it. On the other hand, many westerners could do with using more energy on a day-to-day basis, so the pavement is idea fine (all other things being equal - like ROI on the kit!)
It _should_ be 0% but there is no such thing as a perfect sysem outside theoretical physics. 0.07% is bloody good for system that relies on human input and interpretation. Obviously, it's an absolute arse for anyone caught on the wrong side (and a godsend for anyone catching a false positive), but then, so is being run over by someone who is texting rather than paying attention to the road. Life isn't fair.
Mostly it's because Lewis likes writing about it and we (mostly) like reading it. And then debating furiously whether he's anti-British industry, in love with american tech, or (my view) got an interesting view on how and where we should waste billions of pounds of taxpayers money in the pretence the BAe is a british institution in need of saving.
We like our wishful thinking. And we can counter your objections with more entirely unjustified (and scientifically dubious) wishful thinking: the gas giant's radiation and tidal forces actually act as a spur to mutations and darwinian evolution, so the inhabitants will be incredibly tough and most likely highly advanced and we'd do well to accede to their demands for a tribute of earth women and chocolate.
I'm saddened that someone with your nick should be so lacking in the understanding of simple pleasures like shooting your mates with water pistols and spud guns, especially in the pub.
Unless I've misinterpreted your nickname and like Merlin, you are living your life backwards and you are currently in the bitter, old codger phase ;-)
It works exactly the other way around. These devices will perform best as repositories of un- or seldom-changing data, e.g. OS and program files, hence the unlimited reads bit.. Swap files will kill them faster than just about anything else.
The three year warranty is more likely to reflect the idea that the devices will be replaced for capacity/performance reasons within that timeframe.
If only because it doesn't have that bloody moyles character on it. It's a far better station to use for the radio alarm-clock than the commercial offereings, not least because it frequently figures a real, live astro-physicist on the Friday show!
On a more general note, I thought one of the raisons d'etre of the Beeb was to provide programming that wouldn't be found on commercial stations (TV or radio), so I'm somewhat confused as to why they want to kill off 6music and Asian Music Network. OK, I'll agree that AMN is bloody expensive (as pointed out in earlier stories by Andrew), but it exists because the BBC was accused of not catering the asian population. You know, sometimes it seems that the BBC just can't win ;-)
Or have you not grasped the 'reply to this post' button concept?
And, since I've been stirred to comment already, which bit of hypocritical do we need to explain to you? Personally, I'll settle for picking you up on the 'snap judgement' part'. How do you know that any of of the readers/commentards are unhygenic, passive/agressive or even part of a mob?
Personally, I am just agressive, deplore the mob mentality and shower every day before turning up to my own highly paid job.
I'm seriously concerned for you. You appear to have just admitted to inciting a minor to participate in a serious sexual offence with you! I don't think there is any statute of limitations on this sort of thing (ask the Vatican for a more informed legal opinion on this). As you are no longer a minor (I am making an assumption here), I am worried that the black helicopters will track you down and incarcerate you. Probably somewhere rather unpleasant.
