About to install the Windows 10 April 2018 Update? You might want to wait a little bit longer

SnowCrash

Bring the hate

Update 5 machines at home, all running Avast, plus my work machines which don't run Avast. Usual hour for the update to finish and all working happily.

Obvs I'll switch to Mint or whatever as soon as all the apps I use work as well as they do in Win 10 (I'm not asking for perfection after all).

I've even made peace with the Win 10 start menu....

I've only tried the DK2 and I've only used that in one game - Elite Dangerous.

So......

The DK2 only runs at 75hz and the screen resolution is lower than the CV1. In Elite it changes the game completely creating a pretty immersive experience. But the game puts you sitting in a cockpit chair so it's pretty ideal for that kind of simulator. No idea if it'll work in other types of games, or excel or whatever.

Yes you need a beast of a machine to use it but, if you're buying it for games you should have a decent setup anyway.

Still a bit pricy for the CV1 mind......

Lincolnshire council IT ransomware flingers asked for ... £350

SnowCrash

Had this at the beginning of November (so much for 0-day). Went straight through Messagelabs and McAfee and one person opened it (actually they replied to the email complaining the attachment didn't work).

3 hours downtime while we isolated the workstation and restored from most recent shadow copy (only took that long as DFSr had to be disabled and cleaned).

We were in the middle of migrating to Avast which caught this particular variant.

Good news is much higher awareness of cyber security within the company.

Samsung Gear VR is good. So good 2016 could be year virtual reality finally makes it

SnowCrash

I do wonder how many people have actually tried the current gen VR rigs? I have and yes, the technology has a long way to go. I can only spend about 90mins with the headset on before I get a headache but it's still an immersive experience in the sim.

Better screens and lower latency are two issues I've experienced, one being a pure hardware issue and the other a combination of hardware and software.

Make sure your storage can grow with your business

Re: Not always inexpensive

I would point my finger at my predecessor but that would be mean

SnowCrash

Not always inexpensive

Sadly I'm stuck with 1gb iscsi interfaces. Upgrading the storage, switching and enclosure would need about £20k. I haven't had that sort of budget since before 2008 (in fact my predecessor had that kind of budget, hence i have two c7000 chassis and only 6 out of 32 bays in use). I can dream though

Ecobee3: If you're crazy enough to want a smart thermostat – but not too crazy – this is for you

SnowCrash

The Nest Thermostat is (or at least seems to be) very effective for us. As we don't have the luxury of cavity insulation and double glazing (or even windows that fully seal) it has learnt our schedule over that last 12 months and maintains the temperature we want very well.

It DOES look out of place in a 400 year old cottage though.......

Still reporting the vocal minority then. Love the way the article reads, finding out how I feel about the game from ElReg is very refreshing....

Elite:Dangerous goes TITSUP

SnowCrash

Not had any problems at all. Of the crowd I play with (roughly 50 players) one had a problem that they ticketed. Not really the crash and burn that the article implies but definitely get the feeling that ElReg is basing these articles on the vocal minority.

I backed at KS level (understanding that backing something at that level gave no guarantee of what I might or might not get to play), played through the various pre-release versions, ticketed bugs and am thoroughly enjoying the game.

I guess it's my fault for not being more vocal in my support of the game but then I'd just be labelled a fanboi.

Shame you didn't check out Elite: Dangerous. I know it's only on a current generation PC and requires more than two button presses but it might actually be out this year and I would imagine there are more than a few people here that played the previous incarnations....

Works quite nicely but about to move house so part of the network will drop down to 500mbps devolo links.

LogMeIn: We're stopping our free offering from now

SnowCrash

It IS rather galling to find out that LogMeIn Ignition, a paid for app on both iOS and Android, will only be continued for 6 months and then I'll have to pay for a discounted Pro subscription.

And their handling of the announcement (where a lot have people misread the timescale) coincided with an outage on their website.

I loved the product and can understand why they want to go down the subscription only path but they can probably learn a lot on the PR front.

Addition of IR is nice. I've not had too many problems with the previous gen version. Sits under the TV with Servio and uTorrent running and pretty much forget it's there. Nice low maintenance media box.

When Symantec's away... 28-year-old Asigra becomes 'overnight' cloud backup success

SnowCrash

Re: After what Symantec did to Backup Exec...

I was aware it had changed and it had been tested. I'll even accept a few teething problems out of the box. But when known issues aren't fixed after 3 service packs you've got to wonder what their dev team are up to.

But thanks for judging y'know!

SnowCrash

Re: After what Symantec did to Backup Exec...

Have to cry bullshit on that I'm afraid. Been using 2012 since it came out and, with SP3 installed, it's STILL shit. Updates have resolved serious issues with performance or reporting. Agent backups of critical systems, including Symantec's own Enterprise Vault don't function as they should. Server regularly stops responding mid backup even on the simplest of tasks. I've spent hours on the phone with Symantec support, usually to be greeted with "It'll be fixed in the next patch".

I will say that their support function is pretty damn good - just the devs don't seem to give a shit about the product or the end user.

Windows 8.1: A bit square, sure, but WAIT! It has a Start button

SnowCrash

Stuck with 8.1 for a full 18 hours and have now rolled back to Win 8 RTM (plus Start8 etc). 8.1 "update" introduced touch lag onthe screen, non MS apps weren't rendered correctly. unimpressed. still so much to do to make it a usable interface. Only using Win8 because the laptop has a touch screen. Oh well...... at least there is beer

Energy vs Temperature

Is it only me that hates the continual references to temperature? Yes I understand that it's an easier concept to grasp but underneath it all less energy is being dumped from blue marble. This energy is likely to have unpredictable consequences as the system becomes more chaotic.

Wind farms make you sick … with worry and envy

SnowCrash
Meh

Re: effect on birds

Also the EIS for a lot of windfarms failed to take into account how high bats will actually fly - sounds silly but until the windfarms were put up experts believed they tended to stay lower than 100m - turns out that they are active up to at least 250m.

But there had never been a need to look at bat altitude until exploding bat syndrome was encountered.

Thumb Up

Just upgraded.....

...from a i7 920 to a 3770K and, for my purposes, it a great upgrade. Benchmark rendering in 3dsmax gave me a 388% performance increase. If you're upgrading from Sandy Bridge may it may not be worth it but if you skipped that then I'd recommend.

One thing I wasn't expecting was the power usage. I used to have an "intelligent" powerstrip that would switch off all the peripherals when my machine went to sleep. Now when the machine is idle it doesn't draw enough power to trigger the other sockets.......

Faustian descent into backup hell: A play in two acts

We use the corporate version of Ghost for imaging and have never had any problems with it. I would never use a Norton branded bit of software. played with True Image and it was ok. Uninstalled it fine :)

My advice would be to have several different backup solutions, including NAS, Cloud and removable drives. Trusting a single solution can only cause pain later on.

TalkTalk still the most whinged about telco

SnowCrash
WTF?

If a legal firm tries issuing bill to clients for services that have not been provided i am pretty sure that they lose their license. Why are telecoms providers (and for that fact most utility companies) treated so differently?

Or is it just a question of getting as many of your mates appointed to the regulatory body as possible, thereby ensuring that profitability isn't affected and screw the actual customer.
