Microsoft's Ballmer and Ozzie tag-team on mediocrity

Doug 3
Paris Hilton

are they really noticing?

from what I've seen, there is a complete lack of noticing that Microsoft has failed at and loses billions every quarter on everything not tied to their PC Windows OS.

It sure looks to me like Ballmer is obsessed with Apple and Google and all he can think about is how to "kill f***'n Google" and same goes for Apple. Ozzie is just a geek who did some good work for Lotus but seems lost at Microsoft where they seem to be better at keeping innovators from producing anything innovative while the rest of Microsoft is out trying to copy what's new and make it work on Windows.

It's great that Ballmer is now in control of directing Windows CE. I'm sure that'll make it much better. ha

Paris because she doesn't care what other think.

Microsoft picks over Google's Windows exit strategy

Doug 3

no way, users on Windows?

well then, welcome to the 1980s Microsoft. What took you so long, have your customers not been asking you for this feature? Yup, it is 2010.

decades old OS and browser?

FYI, Windows XP is still a supported corporate OS and IIRC Internet Explorer v6 was part of the OS and had been getting updates. And I suppose they should have been running Microsoft's Windows Vista or maybe thrown away the hardware and purchased new hardware which would run Windows 7?

FYI, there has not been a very good upgrade path from Microsoft for businesses to follow for the past 20 years except rip and replace. Each time they have said that the latest new OS is the best ever but always shown to be less than expected and costing more and more each time. Google already uses alot of Linux based software inhouse via Goobuntu but since securing Windows is like a dog chasing its tail, that breakin via Windows PCs was probably the last straw.

I guess Microsoft should have let Linux own the netbook segment and let Windows XP die but in their brilliance they shipped Windows Vista and had nothing to use but their "old OS" and even then, the netbook vendors needed to bump up the hardware to run it. In my eyes, every OS Microsoft ships is an "old OS".

Paris because no matter how old she gets, her picture stays the same.

Doug 3

that was yet another 'the next version will be better' skits

And that was when Windows XP came out. We'd already had at least 5 years of the public having Internet connected computers and security was just starting to become a focus for Microsoft. I forget how many virus infections had already shut down businesses and services by this point. Wasn't the great east cost blackout due to an energy company network being flooded with Windows virus messages so the computer sending grid status couldn't get through? Trustworthy Computing... ha, it's all just PR blah blah from Microsoft and with every word from their mouths, the phrase I keep hearing about Microsoft being a marketing company and not a technology company sounds about right.

Ballmer says Windows will shame iPad

Doug 3

this reminds me of a song

it goes something like this:

Same old story, same old song and dance, my friend.

If the clues are not big enough to see yet, know this, Microsoft has failed at everything which has not been tied to their desktop and server OS. That's right, they've lost billions and continue to lose billions on everything not tied to the PC Windows OS. And Apple has all but stripped their bones clean in two segments, the multimedia player and the phone platform. It already looks like Apple is on another tear with the iPad while Pen for Windows had its start in the late '80s and Microsoft has tried over and over and over again to get people excited about it but failed. You think maybe it has something to do with Windows itself?

condensate system

maybe using the huge gas chamber as a distributed storage system for the ballast fluid is what they're using. Circulation systems keep the gas and gasified fluid distribution equally throughout but forward and aft ballast systems extract fluid from the gas chamber as needed.

it's about time we got back to using these kinds of things for cargo transport. The lack of understanding of what took out the Hindenburg destroyed a whole industry for decades.

Microsoft clutches open source to its corporate heart

Linux now considered a disease

and Microsoft executives start claiming it is causing corporate heart disease.

in other news, who still believes what Microsoft says when internal memos and emails have shown that they are multi-faced liars?

Paris because she'll say what gets her attention just like Microsoft does.

interoperability? I'm sure that is really part of their plan.

that is just SOOOOoooo over used by Microsoft PR these days it's funny. I really love when they use that when talking about open source software. You know the stuff, where the source code is 100% open for viewing so there's nothing hidden or hiding.

Interoperability in the Microsoft dictionary means it all resides in Microsoft code and if not it is tied to some strange patent issue which makes you wonder when they'll pull the rug out from under you.

No Windows product is safe from this because Microsoft wants everything to run on Windows or it does not run.

Paris because if you don't do it her way, she leaves.

embrace, extend, and extinguish

if there were reasonable signs that Microsoft has changed from an anti-competitive company to a competitive one, then this could be looked at as just another tool. But, since Microsoft continues its standard business practices of spreading FUD, purchasing contracts they'd otherwise lose, and ram rodding their proprietary software down the throats of everyone in their way, this just looks like another EEE tool. You know the type, get them to used the tool and when there's enough movement, reel it in so it only runs or is only updated on the Windows platform and Microsoft controlled tools and API's.

First give us extensive proof they are willing to compete on all platforms and only then should developers even think of glancing their way. Otherwise, it is all about herding you back to Windows and controlling what choices you have.

Stay away from AZURE until you ARE SURE your freedom of choice is ASSURED.

Ubuntu Firefox shuns Google for Yahoo! search

Doug 3
Grenade

divide and conquer

Ubuntu is not a very large threat to Microsoft but Google no only has the money to back some impressive non Microsoft hardware and software but is even making them look more worthless every day( ie web apps not desktop apps ). So if cutting down Google by purchasing eyes away from them and at the same time reducing funding for the Mozilla project helps Ubuntu a tiny bit, it is a non issue for Microsoft because of what they gain from it. They can deal with Ubuntu years from now if they need to. After all, Microsofts patented .Net stuff is being shipped via Mono so no only can they just drop the funding deal Yahoo search provides, they can drop the IP bomb too.

Microsoft is going after Google using the technique of death by 1000 cuts. And isn't this what they used to win the first browser war?

The grenade because with Microsoft, things always blow up in your face.

Microsoft is more secure than OSS

only because you don't know what they are hiding. Do you feel safe now that it is pretty obvioud that the locks on your Windows are just painted on?

Windows 7 users to fly without SP parachute

FAIL

lowered the bar with Vista sooooo

Windows 7 looks like a superstar. When was the last time you saw a comparison between Windows 7 and Windows XP? Even the press doesn't talk about XP much when they talk about Windows 7 and there's a good reason. It's just a little bit better than XP and miles better than Vista.

No wonder some aren't waiting for service pack, they already waited over 7 years for something better from Microsoft and they got one small step in that direction. wow, cheers to them for playing that game.

US faces critical lack of (mad) computer scientists

they should stop limiting the field then

they do not use open source software in any of the K-12 grades and so by that very fact they are limiting the field of potential geeks to those with financial backing to not only purchase the hardware but also the software for the budding geek. What is more likely to produce more, a system where everything the child wants to explore in CS costs atleast $100 a try or one where only the hardware costs exist?

They are limiting the geeks by limiting them to Microsoft software. Give them OSS and give everyone a chance to explore their inner geek.

Google releases Nexus One SDK

Doug 3

re: last paragraph.

good point, maybe one of the things Google is doing with the release of Android 2.1 on the N1 is it gives the current phone vendors a push/reason to adopt v2.1 also. If phones are tied to the telco for 2 years then what incentive is there to keep the phone OS current? By selling an unlocked phone and keeping the OS updated, Google sticks a carrot out there which might keep those tied to a 2 year telco contract happy because it keeps their device updated too.

If anything, selling unlocked phones which are supported by the main vendor behind the OS on the phone means we should get a better phone experience all around.

Microsoft buys Teamprise tool for Java bridge

Re: Phase One - Embrace

exactly what I was thinking. There is no way Microsoft wants developers using Eclipse even if it means developing MS .Net apps. It leaves Microsoft out of the control loop and leaves Java and other languages sitting there just asking to be used.

When Java was growing up, Microsoft went out of its way to purchase up and shut down companies with very interesting technology which used Java. There is nothing Microsoft has done to show they have changed. Embrace, Extend, Extinguish so the choice is not there.

we really need and evil ballmer icon.

HTC says no to Android HD2 to aid Windows Mobile

Doug 3
Gates Horns

it's a business HTC, not a relationship

"HTC has been a Microsoft partner for 13 years." and so it sounds like they will be paying you more to use only their software. Is this kind of a partnership really something your share holders want to hear about? What kind of future is there when the market is buzzing about Android and you say you will not offer that OS on your latest hardware? What's worst, it's because another company is paying you to use their OS, and only their OS, even when customers are sick of that OS.

Bad move HTC, this sector moves fast and will leave you behind very quickly.

evil Bill because they don't really sell Windows Mobile and they've had to pay companies to use it.

re: Wait for it.....

they won't fall all at once but when it does happen, they will have to pull the plug on supporting so many of their money losing ventures that it'll seem like they are shutting down. The vast majority of their profits come from the Windows OS(desktop/server) and Microsoft Office and they continue to lose a billion or so annually on Windows Mobile, MSN, online stuff, Xbox, etc. So as they move further down the curve, they'll have to start cutting more than just a few jobs and things like MS Money.

And it does not help one bit that the iPhone and now Android is showing people that they don't need Windows to have a useful computing experience. They'll either have to start moving software to other platforms and try to compete or keep riding the market down to where they are just another player.

Angelic Steve because they opened peoples eyes to the fact that there can be a happy life outside of Windows.

Doug 3

a deferral of $1.47bn on what?

their product is factory loaded something like 75% of the time, if not more, so what exactly are the costs they deferred? Sounds like they dork with the books and instead deferred marketing costs more than anything else.

and with about a 50% return rate on the Xbox360 yet they show a profit? Oh, that's right, they wrote off billions to cover that a year or so ago. Probably time for another big write-off in the division though since Sony is starting to pick up the pace.

Paris because she's so transparent.

Microsoft's Sidekick restoration turns into farce

Doug 3

Danger was/is BSD UNIX and Java based, so

what do you expect Microsoft to do with that? They have always been willing to lose money on something which give their OS support and they do not care about income from products which are not exclusively tied to their Windows platform.

Is this really a screwup or is this really some plan to jettison the Danger platform? Remember, outside of MS Office for the Mac, they don't do anything but Windows. So this could be a case where they want to bring out something to replace this( Pink? ) or just maybe they've figured it was time to kill off yet another Java based platform?

As far as anyone believing public comments from Microsoft goes, you've got to be quite naive to do that. Didn't Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer change their middle names to "Spin" over a decade ago? They've been at this for twice that long.

Paris because she knows how to spin too.

Ballmer mixed on Windows 7's success

10 years of ignoring Google?

MSN and MSN Live Search were targeted at Google but failed so they change the name of MSN Live Search to BING( Bing Is Not Google ) and it's said that Microsoft or better yet, Ballmer ignored Google for 10 years? How long ago did Ballmer say he was going to F'en kill Google because another Microsoft employee was quiting to go work for Google? Wasn't it about 5 years ago?

comments like that actually put Ballmer in a good light because it makes it seem like the gloves are off and this is the first fight and it'll be a good one. But in fact, it's an old fight and Microsoft has been failing badly.

Paris because Microsoft is like Paris, all fluff and no substance.

Microsoft to encircle Google and Apple with Windows Mobile split

simply hilarious

"Meanwhile, we have the added complication of Windows 7. This will add finger-licking touch and raise further questions of why didn't Microsoft simply cut its losses and cut down the PC version of Windows for mobile devices."

gawd that just busted me up laughing. It has taken Microsoft 10 years to get a modern version of Windows to fit on a 1GHz+ desktop CPU with atleast 1GB of memory and you'd like to see them bring that down to the smartphone products along with porting it to the ARM processor?

Maybe by 2020 and by then, Intel CPUs might be at 19nm and 4GB of memory fits on a pin head so Windows 10 might be an option for phones. But then there's the little problem of running anti-virus software.

Thanks for the laugh.

Grenade because the article blows up on so many levels.

don't implement to the spec and you're not covered

I'm pretty sure I read that you're ok if you can fully implement the spec or at least implement only the spec but go off course in any way and MS will fry you. And because the ECMA doesn't control the spec, Microsoft does, then you not only have to be really careful to only implement the spec but also watch every move Microsoft makes and change your code when theirs changes.

Come on folks, how many have been able to out lawyer Microsoft's lawyers and not end up in court? Hint, almost none and they were all much smarter people than most of you and they've failed.

And I don't think there has been enough of a thread or damage to their monopoly yet for them to pull the patent bomb pin. But, let them lose over 30% market share and watch them pull that pin and scare the industry away from OSS for 10+ years.

Paris because they aren't innocent because they look innocent.

Debian rejects open-source .NET threat claim

Doug 3

big mistake

The road is littered with companies whos lawyers thought they could sign contracts with Microsoft and actually get what they thought. What ended up happening was Microsoft got their customers and technology in just a few short years.

It may take a few more years but when Linux starts really taking over as the standard IT computing platform, Microsoft will pull out the lawyers and start threatening any large org using Linux and force them to sign licensing agreements which make Windows look like a bargain. And didn't Microsoft help finance the SCO effort which did this exact thing?

Debian is making a big mistake and if Ubuntu follows, they too will be making a massive error that'll end up hurting Linux and OSS for at least 10 years after Microsoft pulls the pin on the IP bomb.
