Re: a less crap Lostit Notes would be a start

Never mind the millennium it wasn't updated for the 90's. It was embarrassing having to mail external people and companies, because from previous experience I knew what they looked like in other email clients.

Even by 2010 it hadn't caught up to Outlook Express from the 90's.

But for the IT masochist out there I can heartily recommend the following combination will ruin your life ...... Domino + BES.

Well I was born before 1982, and I knew (and experienced) that doing wrong would result in a few whacks of the slipper, so did my older siblings. So based on that are we all thugs or disturbed sociopaths?

Quite interesting .....

..... as I never used the low power eco WD's (always bet on black) until I threw a 2TB Red in the NAS box. The WD blacks in my main system have been hammered to hell over the years thanks to Steam but have only had an issue when they have been moved to older boxes as they were replaced. I just think WD's don't like being moved.

Extremely surprising were the Hitachi results as in the early 2000's we simply referred to them as Deadstars when they were still IBM owned. No wonder WD snapped them up.

Re: I have been looking into ...

All quite handy tips, thanks guys. As an AMD and ATI user for a number of years I have a few kicking around from x850's all the way up to 7 series. This won't be a serious 'This will be a major investment and needs instant return' thing for me, just a 'I have some kit so will dip my toe in'.

As for the datacentre, I have a basement I can run them from which even in summer never gets above 18 celcius.

If I manage to get even 1 coin after a few months that would be used for the newer mining toys (if it gets that far) leaving the current kit good for the other currencies that still use GPU.

I have been looking into ...

.... currency mining to see what I could get out of the old desktops and servers I have lying around. Windows is on the majority of machines I own as I enjoy PC gaming. But even I and some of the most die hard fans of Windows would know that for a process so valuable, it should not be run on an OS which is still a high priority target for any miscreant, without researching how to lock it down so tightly it would Linus hard. Even worse is what the hell are you doing downloading the software from such sites?

I'm going to be trying it with both a linux machine and a windows machine and already have an old reliable mint laptop I can use for the wallet. The more I read about mining it seems that a number of people involved just installed it on a whim and didn't bother doing any research.

Your attitude is fine, it is perfectly reasonable to want to hit someone who condemns the mayor for shutting down fire stations but has no issue forcing the same mayor to pay 6% pay rises for tube drivers whose salary is 3 times the starting salary of a fireman or constable.

And why do tube drivers get so much? In case someone throws themselves in front of a train. Which has to be a much worse experience than recovering the remains of someones family after a house fire.

I run the IT here solo, many of us do in similar circumstances. I am moving it to a model where one day I will not be needed at all. So far from protecting my job I am actively trying to make myself redundant. Why? Because that's what the business needs and I was employed to benefit the business.

Companies I have worked for ......

...... have always had a policy for this. We will supply a device and software requisite for your job. If you choose to install software yourself that's fine, but please note that if you log an issue with the device we will not troubleshoot, support or assist you until the non-authorised software is removed. If you can't remove it and insist we repair we will use the most expedient method, wipe and image. This kind of policy was most welcome especially when iTunes launched on Windows, or when the Felix cat food screensaver was given away.

For the IT side of things we had peer sign off, and the ability to check what the software did before spamming the next button.

Re: Dear Apple .......

Quite close AC but not quite there. While Visa/Mastercard/et al do charge various figures for transactions, this is an individual processing charge. Once your company hits a certain number of charges a year this individual charge will be changed to a flat rate for all processing. Depending on the deal worked out with the merchant services Apple could be down to 1-2p per transaction.

Re: If I am in a shop then I have ID ...

At no point in that poll is the question asked why they have chosen that response. So you using that poll as a basis for your assertion, regarding they don't want that discussion, is worthless.

On the car, gun and the rest of the items that is my choice. If I choose to purchase those items then I am happy to jump through the requisite hoops. The filter is not a choice I have. It is in place for everyone and still in place even if I opt out. And as stated in the story, it does not just filter porn.

And why is he an AC? Probably because if any of the brainless hardware techies where he worked saw the post they would stop popping up every morning to turn his computer on for him :D

So answer me this, if you coders are so great and us support techs are so dumb why are most of the problems we encounter software related?

Eradicate all BB entrants

You will only usually fail on the experience side .....

...... if you apply for positions higher than a helldesk role straight away. I had no degree and no experience of IT in a work environment (but over 10 years personal) yet still managed to land a job in 1st line. No matter what aspect of the industry you want to end up in if you don't 'know' someone you have to pay your dues somewhere on the bottom rung. Also a plus is that a lot of 1st line positions are just under the threshold required for paying back your student loans so you get the industry experience you need while delaying the money worries.

If with your degree you think you should not have to start from the bottom then I have no pity for the troubles you face, IT is now a full service industry, which means in the company hierarchy you are at the bottom of the pile.

RBS et al didn't need to invest that much in tech ....

...... as they used to have a large number of highly skilled techs that maintained existing systems while upgrading others for newer functions. They had a history with all of the systems and knew what would work and what wouldn't even before testing had started.

This would have allowed them to replace and upgrade over time with minimal disruption.

Then they decided, in order to save some money on the balance sheet and give some more clueless middle management extra bonuses, to offshore all of it to techs with no experience of the systems and their quirks who were taught by people who did not have that level of experience either.

So now we have a majority state owned bank losing more money through compensation than it saves from off shoring having to spend even more money to replace systems their 8000 mile away techs are unable to repair.

And still no one senior has been sacked for the complete shambles.

Xbox sold 150K in a week? ......

As for who will win the console war, and I say this as someone who bought the new Xbox just for Forza 5 (it is worth it) I would have to say the winner is the PC, got Reus for something like £1.74 on Steam last night. A great little game.

This crap about real gamers will pick PS4, kids will pick Xbox and beardy wierdys will get a Steam box is really pathetic. Spread the FUD all you like but actual real gamers are multi-platform, because we enjoy playing games and not participating in willy waving regarding who gets the most FPS on COD.
