Apple breaks ground on massive Oregon data center

John 104

Re: obHeadline

But you could take it a step further and quote Apple:

"Apple have invented a new, magical place, where our 'computers' work their wonderous things. This new concept is called 'data center' and is the first of its kind. And also the largest. We will now sue everyone else who had already created a data center for patent infringement. You see, ours specifies that the badge reader is on the LEFT side of the door..."

Affected by ebook price-fixing? Amazon has a few shiny pennies for you

John 104

Pricing Blows

it all blows anyway. I'll be the first in line to buy ebooks when the publishers and resellers stop gouging consumers. Charging the face value for an electronicaly formatted title is a rip off. There are no printing costs, no distribution, no middle man. You have an already formatted text, saved as a variety of ebook styles - a days work at best. Put infrastructure, rented or otherwise, on the bill, plus the nominal cut for the publisher and author and these things don't really cost much to impliment. Instead, the industry has just shifted the format and kept the savings to themselves. Fuckem.

Schmidt: Google deathmatch with Apple is 'defining' for the tech biz

@AC

"but then of course they borrowed pinch to zoom from Apple."

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is just another tech that Apple and others have used. It is not new and exclusive to Apple and then copied by the rest of the world.

Excellent

Me and my fishing buddy watch this film every spring, ahead of Salmon season. Last year we watched it on his boat, at dusk, with my 12 year old in tow. It was epic.

US court lifts ban on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Hahaha

Too funny. I have a client who is a millionair. He is a very smart person who has done very well for himself over his career. He is technically incompetent, ie. gran. Outside of simple browsing and basic apps, I have to do any number of "complicated' things like setting up wireless or email, etc on his Apple products. Is it easy? Not really when compared to other systems. Installing a printer? Much easier on a PC or vanilla Linux. Setting up email on a phone or tablet? Easier on Android. Could he do these on his own like gran? Obviously not...

Mine's the one with the extra check in the pocket...

US said to designate Assange 'enemy' of the state

John 104

Optional

It's not the quantity, its the quality.

The same could be said for when the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor. A few thousand were killed on our side. Then a few million on the Japanese side. Grab the tiger by the tail and you'll get the teeth.

It is really surprising that no one seems to remember how much of a beat down we gave the Japanese after their actions in '41. We got our own licks as well, but nothing like what we dished out.

The moral: Don't fuck with the US on our own soil or you will get a serious ass kicking. The rest of the world may not like it, but really, here in the US we don't care when it comes down to it.

Er.. yes they did. Some of the nicest automotive kit is coming out of Korea in the form of Hyundai and Kia. Surprisingly. And the joke is, it costs less than just about everything else out there (in the US anyway) and has a great warranty. :)

@Nince Circles

You'll have to explain how showing a notification at the top of the screen and pulling down box with past notification is less obvious than what Apple has patented, but maybe another day. I'm already over the daily dose of hypocrisy allowed by my doctor

It is no less obvious than round corners or "look and feel" characteristics that Apple is suing on. Somehow it is OK for Apple but not for google?

Why the Apple-Samsung verdict is good for you, your kids and tech

John 104

Re: Bent but not broken

@ Andrew

OK. Here is a real "cost to society". If this ruling stands, Samsung has to pay 1.2 BILLION dollars(US) to Apple. Do you honestly think that they aren't going to pass this on to consumers by way of higher price tags for their devices? Or perhaps they will just not spend so much to develop features for their kit. Or both. That affects anyone who might consider buying their product. You can say that they have deep pockets all you want, but I guarantee you that no one at Samsung is just shrugging this off and saying to themselvs, "oh, well, no worries. We have lots of money and this is just a small percentage."

Don't be an ass. WYSIWYG has been around for decades and is not exclusive or magically brought to us by the wonders of OSX/iOS.

John 104

Next Apple will be trying to get a royalty for every square electronic device in your home.

This is a pointed statement here in the states. If the ruling stands, then it will be used for case law. At that point, Apple could legitimately sue or demand royalty payment from any manufacturer of electronics for putting round corners on anything. TV, Computer, Laptop, microwave, you name it. This ruling MUST NOT STAND just for that reason alone.

John 104

Re: WTF?

@ Whitter

No kidding. An amazingly Apple sided take on the ruling. This is in no way good for consumers. This is a loss for us all and just one more case of Apple bullying its way about in the market.

Smart phones were around before the iPhone, so there isn't much inventing there, just nice packaging and clever marketing.

iPad? Same. Again Apple just managed to make it smaller and then declare that the world needed it.

The polarizm is all about the dollar. If huge sums of money weren't involved, this would not be the issue it is. However, people have made careers out of thiis topic. Business have made billion dollar decisions based on this topic and the FUD and warm fuzzies that it produces. It isn't going away, unfortunately, because there is just too much at stake.

Re: Tab2

What everyone is really saying here is that Apple doesn't have any thing that distinguishes itself. The best it can do is compete on looks. There are no real substantive differences. There's no real reason for someone to buy an Apple product.

You aren't really just figuring this out, are you?

'Zombie bullets' fly off US shelves after wave of undead attacks

John 104

RE: Bootnote

Missed the boat on this one. The plastic insert is NOT for streamlining the round. The point of the insert is to allow uniform expansion of the round upon impact. If you look at the difference between straight hollow points vs nosler style rounds you can see the benefit. A typical hollow point usually expands in an irregular manner or fragments on entry. The nosler style provides a wider expansion, maximizing target damage.
