Sir Terry remembered: Dickens' fire, Tolkien's imagination, and the wit of Wodehouse

Gordon861

Another vote for Guards Guards as the best newbie Discworld book to start with. It is a great introduction to the world and humour without really needing to know anything about the disc. I have lent copies to friends in order to get them hooked and it never fails.

As to the man himself, I met him once after queuing for hours in Kingston to get the new book signed, he will be greatly missed.

Canadian bloke refuses to hand over phone password, gets cuffed

Gordon861

Re: This is a trivial 'software requirements' problem

No reason why the software to set up an extra pin number shouldn't allow for as many pins/accounts as the phone has memory. The front end would just ask for a pin and then open the relevant hidden account.

Porn on Blogger – Google takes stiff action

Gordon861

Porn Blogs

Does this mean all the porn blogs will now have questionnaires at the bottom of the page where you can answer questions about how the content made you feel.

Of course all this data is going to be recorded for the paper being written on the short term effects of internet porn. Is that scientific research?

Undead nights: Zombie FPS Dying Light shines bright

Gordon861

The way around the CPU issue seems to be to turn down the depth of field slider, which seems to lower the detail at a distance rather than cause zombies to pop into existence when you get close.

TotalBiscuit on YouTube did a early review/test that showed it in action.

I'm running an i5-2500K, 16gb RAM, and a 980gtx across 5760x1080 res and I'm not having any problems so far.

Want a cheap Office-er-riffic tablet? Microsoft Windows takes on Android

Gordon861

I was thinking of one of these for general media use until I looked at the websites FAQ.

-------------------------------

http://www.linx-tablets.com/linx-faq.html

Can you add the tablets to a network?

No, they do not support domain joining so you wouldn't be able to add to a network

Can users drag and drop files onto the tablet from a PC/laptop?

No, it is not possible as the windows tablet cannot act as mass storage device like that. The windows tablets are essentially the same as a PC/laptop, just like if you connect two laptops via USB, they cannot read either or transfer files.

If the user wants to get files to their tablet, they should transfer to a USB key then use the OTG cable to connect to the tablet and copied them to the tablet or add them to a micro SD card and insert directly to the micro SD slot and copy to the tablet from there.

-------------------------------

This might make it a little difficult to get the files you want to play onto them, other than copying them one at a time. Although BitTorrentSync might solve this problem.

The FAQ also says that the Office365 sub is locked to the tablet only, so not installable elsewhere.

Perhaps after a while someone will produce a hack that will open these up more, or a Linux install that will allow more features people want?

Smart meters in UK homes will only save folks a lousy £26 a year

Gordon861

£215 over 5 years to pay for them?

Why not just buy every household OWL meters which can be fitted in a few minutes. They retail for less than £100 and if you said you want a few million I would bet they would do a deal on the price.

Australia deflates Valve with Steam sueball

Gordon861

What Steam/Valve should do is set up a system to allow you sell on any game in your library for a fixed $5 admin fee.

With the DRM allowing the game to be removed from your library and added to someone elses there should be few problems and they would make a fair bit of money on secondhand sales.

Hello, police, El Reg here. Are we a bunch of terrorists now?

Gordon861

Re: who the fuck would want to watch it anyway?

I was shown one a while back. Some drunk on a night bus was showing videos on his phone (pre-smartphones) and pretty much just shoved it in my face. It's not something you can unwatch.

It was lowres pixely, but not something I would ever want to see again, or think about if possible.

Yes, but what are your plans if a DRAGON attacks?

Gordon861

I think it used to be similar with the Emergency Planning in local authorities, but then they decided to get rid of the radios and aerials from the town halls and the radios.

I think they now plan to rely on mobile phones, which won't have a chance, and amateur radio which will also mostly be fried if a nuke hits.

Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 claimed lives of HIV/AIDS cure scientists

Re: So sad

Oh God now we are getting invaded by Anonymous PutinBots too.

Anything said by the RT channel needs to be looked at as if it has been supplied by FOX News, if not even worse as it is totally controlled by Moscow. Good write up of RTs MH17 coverage here http://www.interpretermag.com/rt-covers-the-shooting-down-of-mh17/

The Ukrainians have already said that they do not have any BUKs in the combat zone, why would they the rebels aren't flying planes. However multiple video footage has been uploaded of a BUK launcher in the rebel areas, located using things like Streetview to match up the locations.

Finally on the subject of the Spanish air controller, Spain has confirmed that he doesn't exist, and all the controllers at the Ukraine ATC are Ukrainian. 'Carlos' (I think that's the name) is a fiction that turned up a couple of times to post fake stories via Twitter.

Er ... so it is censorship? This sentence makes no sense.

Texan parks quadcopter atop Dallas Cowboys stadium

Gordon861

Re: DIRTY BOMB!!!

A reasonable sized quad can probably lift around a KG, you use a hex or octo and set it up for a target you have a pretty good delivery system.

Program the route into a GPS equipped one and you don't even need to sit there flying it.

Gordon861

Re: Complete Analogy fail - But Ill continue it

Are you aware that you can remotely add/remove games etc from your devices via play.google.com without even having to plug them in?

Also if you use BitTorrentSync you could set up a master directory on your main PC/MAC and just copy/remove their movies/music there and again never have to touch their machines. Of course you could also do this on iPads too.

This may be a much better idea rather than having to hand over their machines to Mum/Dad every time something needs changing.

DEATH-PROOF your old XP netbook: 5 OSes to bring it back to life

Gordon861

Old Netbooks

I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I'll have to just replace my old NB100 Toshiba Netbook if I need something more up to date now.

But I have found that they still work great as a mobile backup device for digital photos when you are away from home. Every evening create a new directory and backup all you photos from the day to the machine whilst deleting the crap. That way if you lose your camera whilst out you still have a full copy of all your pics.

WTF is the Internet of Things and how insurers will use it against you

Gordon861

Re: LAN of Things?

I don't understand why something similar to this isn't done with modern cars.

If a company like Ford (or similar) could get every car driver to upload data regarding the running of their engines. It could allow them to tweak engine management systems depending on real world data instead of just doing a 'one size fits Europe' setup.

There is also no reason why the key couldn't remap the system instead of having to go back to a dealer for the work too.

Win8 Upgrade

I took the plunge last night and installed Win8 on one of my low powered XP PCs to see how it went.

It runs surprisingly well on a 2GB RAM Atom 1.6Ghz machine.

All I need to do is work out how the hell to use the OS, hope the 8.1 update brings back some ore familiar stuff.

Brazilians tear strip off NSA in wake of Snowden, mull anti-US-spook law

Gordon861

I think the reason demanding local hosting of the data might work is because this way if it is found that the data is being shared with the NSA or other agency then the local company can be sued/prosecuted into oblivion locally.

Cameron demands Brits BOYCOTT angry-troll-infested websites

"Prime Minister David Cameron has told Brits to "boycott" websites that allow trolls and bullies to publish reams of nasty abuse and threats with wild abandon."

So from tomorrow the Daily Mail website will be banned then ?

It might actually increase teh average IQ of the country if they did ban it.

Smart TVs riddled with DUMB security holes

Gordon861

We Don't Need Smart TVs

Instead what we need are Smart boxes that connect to the HDMI socket with a pass through so you don't waste the slot.

If you can get the Smart boxes down to a reasonable price there is no reason people won't replace them each year as a newer (hopefully better) version is released.

TV companies should concentrate on producing very good screens that will accept various external inputs and leave the Smart stuff to the people that understand it.

Anonymous threat shutters Gitmo WiFi

Gordon861

Closing Gitmo

If they cannot close it due to legal problems and feeling that the people being held are enemy combatants, what they should do is make it a proper POW camp and open access to the Red Cross/Crescent.

This would go a long way towards solving the legal issues with it.

First, the bad news: EA bags Star Wars games rights

Adobe kills Creative Suite – all future features online only

Gordon861

If there are new features that are needed in the new versions they will just do a single login/subscription that the whole office can use.

Turn off the mic: Nokia gets injunction on 'key' HTC One component

Gordon861

Copyright?

So Nokia have developed a phone mic that is perfect for making bootleg recordings of concerts etc, and they are now suing HTC so that only their phone is able to make these recordings.

I assume the music industry and film industry will now be suing Nokia for producing tools to copy their content.

Furious Stephen Fry blasts 'evil' Reg and 'TW*T' Orlowski

Review: HTC One

Gordon861

One X, S, V, X+ or just One

I thought HTC said when they launched the One X and One S that they would be simplifying their range of phones so you could see which one was the higher end without needing to know the details of each phone.

I didn't realise that simplify meant calling every damn phone they release 'One'.

Fashionably slate

Gordon861

We don't need Smart TVs that will be obsolete in 6 months, a small set-top (or behind/under/wherever the set) box is a better solution.

If you want to add a camera for Skype into the TV, fine but make it able to feed into the USB of the external box as a webcam.

This way when there is a OS upgrade, or a new 'next big thing' you can just upgrade the box or replace it.

All I want from a TV is a good quality display and a ton of usable inputs/outputs.

I want a car with a built in dock for my Nexus 7.

There is no reason the in car audio couldn't be set up to use the Nexus as it's control/display unit. I can then either tether the Nexus to my phone and use Google Maps or use the 'no data required' TomTom software.

Texan schoolgirl expelled for refusing to wear RFID tag

Gordon861

I expect the next evolution of this tech will be to monitor who is getting with who around the school.

So student A is found out breaking the rules and they then look back and student B has been spending a lot of time with them outside normal lessons and use that to start questioning them too.

Or they bring in a rule regarding how close members of the opposite sex can be whilst at school.

They could even add in the shock collars/bracelets they want to pass out to air passengers and use remote discipline too.
