How about allowing for growth, Whatever size pipe you come up with for today's capacity, next year's could be double so a 4" pipe becomes a 6" pipe to ensure some future proofing.

Israeli spies rebel over mass-snooping on innocent Palestinians

Re: A joke, or some form of Israeli PR right?

Israel did not exist before it was formed! There were a couple of right wing groups in Palestine with small membership who undertook terrorist activities such as the Stern Gang and Lechi. It was never the policy of the main independence movement which condemned and abhored their activities.

Bicycles first

A bit of research by Google and there's an immediate reaction to accommodate them. Bicycles have been around a lot longer and given their numbers on London and other roads, the Highway Code has been in need of revision to accommodate them properly rather than tolerate them for a long time. Some examples (with due regard for pedestrians:

1. Left turn on red lights

2. Go on pedestrian lights if there are no pedestrians

3. Right of way over powered vehicles at all junctions

Do you really want tech companies to pay more tax?

Mr Michael Strelitz

Unfair Advantage

By paying low taxes the effective cost of capital of these companies is lower than their competitors. Consequently they have an unfair advantage when it comes to both pricing and investments and can take predatory actions that lead to lower competition in the market and ultimately higher prices.

Cloud backups: Where's my get out of jail card?

Mr Michael Strelitz

From a vendor too

We have been running a backup service for 17 years. We have always stored the data in our own data centre for accessability and the issues discussed above. We charge a bit more because of this, but our clients know where their data is and our T's and C's have always said that it is their property (but not the actual media).

It was the same with VHS and Betamax

Despite all the press about VHS trumping Betamax in the 90's, in parts of the world - including many countries in South America and the Near East - it was the dominant format and is/was one of the most commercially succesful products ever developed.

There are roughly 2000 million bus journeys and 1000 million tube journeys/year in London. According to TFL 85% of bus journeys and 60% of tube journeys are paid for by Oyster card i.e. 2300 million journeys. The contract costs 10000 million p/yr i.e. just over 4p/journey

50 years based on what?

Do we have any information on the accelerated life tests used to justify 50 years?

What are the storage conditions required to ensure 50 years, including acceptable margins ? We need wide margins that will apply to standard well designed "green" offices that do not rely on air-conditioning in summer and make do with minimal artificial heating in winter.

Downing Street rejects Vista petition

Grey imports not allowed

Contrary to the government's protestations it does in fact set the price because it gives legal protection to companies in allowing them to stop grey imports. If we could freely import software from the US and other (non-EU) countries there would soon be a true market and little to no price differences. The only reasons for the discrepanies are the legal protection afforded and the dominant position of the companies. It is no defence saying we are free to use other software because if we wish to do business with the USA then by and large we need to be compatible with their systems.
