Britain prepares for government by iPad

Scarborough Dave
Meh

Our local councillors have voted for them

With alledged savings of also £50K, I think £30K of it was one tech guys job.

Costing £160 each year for 3 years with a data bundle on top of around £15 per month.

Still unsure how the locations services function, and the other fun bits will get on etc..

Sounds like a security and privacy nightmare, mind you might be fun using a FindMyMP app and see if your MP is actually at work.

Dabs warns staff: Your roles are 'at risk of redundancy'

Scarborough Dave
Thumb Down

Haven't used Dabs since a few months after BT bought it.

In the old days Dabs had great prices and great service, the RMA system was sweet all done online.

Then BT came along and the prices were no longer great, customer service slowly went downhill and the RMA system was challenging.

Real shame for the team there as there were some really good people I dealt with, but just shows you how quickly BT can take a good business and drive it into the buffers!

Re: Coventry Pie

Re: Coventry Pie #

No Raspberry pi to be made in UK, unless the UK government changes import duty rules.

Currently the Pi would require duty being paid on each and every individual component in the unit.

If you import the unit as whole, the duty is less as it is classed as one import component (as such)

The is more on the issue here http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/509

eBuyer £1 sale fail: Customers vent fury... on Facebook

Scarborough Dave
Happy

I was very annoyed!

Then I got real and thought "Oh well $#!+ happens"

Their FB page now has 53.5K likes, so overall the campaign probably worked for them, then with the PR they have had over the failure - I think if I was Dave Wood I would be happen with the result overall.

I have used Ebuyer in the past and had no issues, though I was unaware of the £1 campaign, until I went to the site and found it not working - then Googled the issue.

Amazon's Kindle Fire is sold at a loss

Scarborough Dave

I think the Kindle release is a brave move considering the recent HP fondle slab experience.

I have tinkered with moving to Andriod myself, but the Apple phone and fondle slab being from the same stable just makes life easier.

My problem is I don't know enough about cross hardware integration with the various Andriod device manufactures and app stores?

Will I be able to have unto 5 devices use the same game license (per apple) or will each hardware device have to buy a fresh game license?

I don't think I am alone.

Though the price is unbelievable, I think this device will be the one device to entice me over to try Andriod, with Amazon's cloud I expect good content and reliability. If Amazon ever brought a decent phone out too, then Apple has a competitor.

Nostalgia try again!

Remember my mum has a brand new Renault 5 Gordini way back with tinted windows (very cool back then).

Oh! Well, better luck this time Renault!

Still preferred my old Maxi though.

Anyone seem this in any T's & C's on a website?

Windows Flavours!

I'm with you on this one "DEAD4EVER", hope microsoft brings out only one flavour, or at the worst 2, one for business and one for home (ie. no domain logon).

Though since we only recently upgraded to W764, and I cannot see us upgrading until Windows 9 or 10.

Windows 7 is very good in our system, users prefer it to XP, also since money is tight our motto in our business is "if it ain't bust don't fix it!"

Scarborough Dave
Holmes

Cloud is comming whether we like it or not!

My MD is very keen on Cloud having been an MD's only "the future of business" type meeting.

Though he was reminded this week when two of the BB lines went down and we were left with my "final fall over solution" a WIMAX connection to my home BB line to maintain internet access.

Then one of the managers got "fraped" down the pub, on his own mobile, and sent a rather obscene message on the company email system to the management team. :)

So we will have to adapt to this new future.

Diary of a not-spot: Vulture hack vows, I will never pay BT again!

Scarborough Dave

I agree with what you have said.

We fitted the system ourselves, but got it certified by a professional and took images of each stage of the works (for him and the insurer).

Save us around £1500, as the "Arrestor guy", was fully booked for the next 6 months.

In our area we get a lot of lightning strikes and have seen several on buildings in the area while I was working on our roof. I did immediately leave the roof after I saw the strikes, didn't even look like a thunder storm was about to happen, i just did. The air was all tingly (and my spanner), which I think should have told me something. So yes, lightning strikes are common in the UK.

Scarborough Dave
Thumb Up

Elastictrickery!

If you directly earth the transmitter pole you are more likely to suffer a strike on that pole.

So might be best to trust to luck and “fire box” the kit directly connected to the transmitter unit.

Though you could always place a second pole taller by around 6ft and directly earth this to the ground to a depth of around 4ft, thereby providing a route of lower resistance, favoured by the elastictrickery gods!

This is what I did after discussing our existing pole with our insurers, there are plenty on professional online guides to the recommended way to do this.

Keep us all posted on your exploits!

iPhone 5 now set for October launch

I am not Fanbios but...

I am no fan of Apple due to the "lock-in" and generally because it is Apple. (Sorry fanbois, probably get some down votes on that comment alone!)

But as a 3GS user since 2009, I do like the OS, simple does what you need it to do.

The aftercare is good too, I recently "water damaged" my iPhone and got a replacement from the Apple Store (long drive away) for £55. Try doing that with a HTC!

So eagerly awaiting the new phone as our contract is due for renewal at work.

We also use around 20 iPods, for managers email and comms, great for a manager on site whom you do not want to be desk bound and is not IT literate, as most people can get there heads around the emails system after first use.

So can't wait for my new one! :)

Microsoft rolls out One Big Windows strategy

Presumably, there will still be Windows Home Premium, Pro and Ultimate, for each environment.

Hopefully MS will move to one flavour for the everything.

NOTW hack-hackage: Inside the personal data press mess

Scarborough Dave
Facepalm

Don't forget the mobile network providers

Not forgetting that the voicemail remote access vulnerability (I also wouldn't call it hacking) falls at the feet of the mobile providers using default codes.

They could have simply used a random code and text the code to the user once the phone was activated asking the user to change the code after input.

BT cheerfully admits snooping on customer LANs

All my BT Business Hubs

Are still proudly in their shiny cellophane covered boxes!

I asked for our BT business Broadband connections without ADSL modems ( I have a collection going back some years), however, the perplexed sales person at the other end said that I couldn't have the lines without the "free" BT Business hubs.

So in the store box they went, just in case they ask for them back one day, or someone I know needs a replacement.

I have never and would never use a proprietory ADSL modem, unless it had my own firewall behind it and NAT'ed; this is what I recommend to all my friends.

Happy Easter Everyone! and I agree!

I am more concerned with the data being inaccurate but "plod" thinking it is accurate, I have met a few very educationally challenged "plods" in my time.

Secondly, we need greater transparency with regard to the data stored on these types of device which often connect to a PC and on third party systems. This needs to have some form of legislation regarding it, from democratically elected officials.

Finally, from an employment perspective and the use of devices owned by a company that track the movements of employees during work time is one thing, but when the employee uses these devices outside work (as many do), then I expect some lawyers will have fun with defining, who owns the data who has access to it.

Duke my old friend!

As a long time Duke Nukem fan from the platform days.

After 15 years of being drilled in saying Chairperson not Chariman and Blocklist not Blacklist, I think I would feel a bit uncomfortable playing game this in todays modern politically correct world.

Also, unless the game designers bring out more inventive play and humour than the already "done to death" Duke having a wee, Duke saying " shake'em baby", then I think it will struggle in sales against the "modern warefare" themes.

Still love the old game the use of mirrors and crouching was miles ahead of Quake at the time.
