119 iPad apps for admins, coders, and geeks

How does that humble pie taste then?

Not just a useless toy for 'fanbois' after all, is it?

To be fair though, you have to use one for a bit before you realise what a neat little thing it is.

Shame about the lack of Flash support in the browser though - a lot of educational sites and embedded video are missing... for now. I predict a rapprochement 'twixt Apple and Adobe, at least in the browser.

Android for iphone?

Come on guys. The hardware is compatible, isn't it?

Google seeks interwebs speed boost with TCP tweak

About time TCP/IP got a workover

...and the 'do no evil' bulldozer can push it hard and fast, but header compression that 'bypasses' lower layers is a bit worrying as that is where the security stuff is handled, isn't it?

Video calling impresses Brits, if it's Apple video calling

dave 93
Thumb Up

It's not about phones, it's about live video...

Skype, and others, really have made video chatting/presence pretty mainstream now.

Let's wait and see if Apple's hubris will allow Skype to use the iPhone cameras, or if Skype will support Facetime, then it will get interesting, especially as Skype is about to go 720p friendly.

In lots of situations, simple and cheap (ie free) video is a real bonus (read the tech support post above), bring it on, I say!

Ten Essential... iPad Games

dave 93

The games are cheap though...

"£7.49 seems a bit steep"

Really? Getting decent, modern games for that price is new, isn't it?

Apple Mac Mini 2010

Clean it out if it overheats

All the cooling air is channelled through a mesh near the processor. If it is in a dusty or smoky environment it can clog up quite quickly leading to over temperature shutdowns. Nice strip down videos on youtube. The one it replaces also had 1G DDR3 RAM and an extra USB port.

Did they drop the IR remote?

Got an iPhone 4 yet? No? You're gonna have to wait now

@ MisterBates

Only $360 million in pre-order sales (and that is if they are all 16GB models).

I guess some people (i.e. you) are very hard to impress.

IMHO Getting a zombie cult up and running is pretty impressive too. ;-)

We need to know

How many iPhones are the 'talking lightbox' of choice among 'Team Register'. Come on, 'money where your mouth is' time (or not). Don't be coy ;-)

600,000 pre orders in one day is quite impressive, wherever your allegiances my lie. Personally, I have a 3G iPhone, and it is a very cool toy. Not such a great phone, but all the other stuff rocks. Now that Android is catching up, and can do more useful things for free (turn, by turn nav and create a wifi base station to name a couple), I may well jump ship in the next few months just to keep life interesting.

Mind you, the new iPhone has a gyroscope, and I had one of those when I was a kid and that was a cool toy too.

Did the iPad just save Wired, and Conde-Nast?

dave 93

duh! wifi is ethernet

How hard will it be to 'jailbreak' ChromeOS and run local apps, albeit Linux ones, if you want to?

Tories declare students a burden on us all

dave 93
Grenade

Scrap tuition fees and introduce retrospective graduate tax

Describing students as an unacceptable burden on UK taxpayers is somewhat shortsighted, as these will be the future drivers of the UK economy.

If the government wants universities to better cover their costs, the government could introduce a retrospective 'Graduate Tax' on earnings of, let's say, 5%, that is paid back to the university they studied at.

Making it retrospective, by which I mean all graduates would pay it, not that it taxes graduates on past earnings, means that the funding switch can be made immediately, and taxing income make it a progressive tax. Paying it back to the universities they studied at encourages universities to prepare their students to be productive members of society (i.e. earn decent money).

Of course this will never happen as the government would lose their control of Higher Education funding, and they would all be liable for the tax too.

Prisoner of iTunes - the iPad file transfer horror

dave 93
WTF?

meh - not news - I'm used to mailing things to myself now

Really? Emailing things to myself works fine for me, and you can find them easily with the built in search.

It wasn't the way I expected to have to work, but since all my emails are accessible from any computer, it is better than having them stuck on one machine, and everything backed up automatically.

Honestly this is such a non-issue for most people, why bother puffing it up into an article?

Lazy, lazy lazy Register. Disappointed

Blunkett threatens to sue for £30 ID card refund

dave 93
Welcome

An entitlement card is not a bad idea, really

Having to produce photo ID when you access state benefits or state health care sound like common sense, doesn't it? As a taxpayer it is nice to think that there is a check before dishing out cash and services to people.

For example, my wife was working as a GP in Luton when she noticed that she was filling in the same address a lot, and a quick look in the files revealed 60 people using the same residential address that didn't even exist.

I don't live in the UK any more, but where I do live, everybody has to register their address at the police station, and that form is used everywhere from banks to doctors to the tax office to confirm that you are who you say you are. Sounds bad, but actually makes life a lot easier because you only need that one form and not a bunch of utility bills, or even worse, for taxpayers footing the bills, nothing at all.

I recon Blunkett's ID card would go for more than 30 quid on ebay!

There's news, and there's NEWS

"a company that now has a smaller market capitalisation than its arch-rival?"

Apple is now the world's biggest technology company.

Don't you think this deserves a story all to itself, no matter how much crow El Reg has to eat?

A significant bit you don't mention is that with Visual Studio available as an IDE for iThings, it is much easier to create apps for jail broken devices without infringing the EULA that comes with Apple's SDK. Anti-trust will more than likely force Apple to allow users to install apps from outside the AppStore eventually

Amazon Kindle flunked by college students

add another 300 books and you would run out first!

A Kindle or iPad can hold hundreds of books, can you? I have seen articles about text books on the iPad, shipped as an app that you can highlight, annotate, search etc. Also including animation and video. Just a shame that so many educational websites use Flash, and Apple has decided not to support it. :-(

Flash embraces Google's open video codec

dave 93
WTF?

Grow up, and put your money where your mouth is

"Cupertino cult" Oh please. Apple is a business, and nobody, repeat nobody, is forced to buy anything from them that they don't want, OK?

As for Adobe, why haven't they produced a single working mobile Flash plug-in yet? Even on Android there is nothing after two years - nothing.

If it is all Apple's fault for banning Flash content in Safari, why not produce a working player/plug-in for jailbroken phones to prove how great Flash really is on iphones? Go on, prove that it is not a battery draining resource hog once and for all, please. Then we can all move on...

This witch-hunt will hurt Adobe more than Apple

dave 93
Coat

Adobe CS updates drive new Mac sales

As each subsequent version needs more and more RAM and CPU.

Flash could do the same for mobile devices. Apple should let Flash on the iPhone/Pad and use the battery draining CPU hog as a reason to buy a new, more powerful iPhone every couple of years.

EFF fights Facebook bid to outlaw one-stop social apps

dave 93
WTF?

Er, what has Apple, the iPhone and the iPad have to do with this story?

"It's worth noting that Facebook's attempts to stop users from accessing their content through alternate means isn't much different than Apple deciding what apps can run on its iPhones and iPads."

Top quality bollocks!

Facebook is scared you won't see their ads if you get updates in another UI, but it is quite a stretch, even if it does raise your Google listing, to wheel out the 'bash Apple for vetting apps' and try to link the two. DO Reg hacks have orders to link every story to Apple, the iPhone and the iPad, because it is getting somewhat boring and predictable.

By the way, one could argue that having your browser remember your login details is a type of 'Automation' that is in violation of Facebook's EULA

Apple actively supports Windows on Mac hardware, so why not Android on iPhone?

Now what we need is a pointy clicky wipe, unlock and install Adroid. Sweet, because I, personally, am a bit bored with my iPhone now. Don't get me wrong, it is an amazing device, I just bore easily ;-)

There is a growing number of 'obsolete' iPhones out there (iPhone OS 4 doesn't work properly on 3G, which has to be the most popular model), so an alternate OS would be a breath of fresh air.

Custom keypads for data entry into 'forms'

is actually pretty cool. It lets anyone wander about collecting data and entering it quickly and (more) correctly. 'Soft' keyboards work in any language too, and people like to work in their own language.

Maybe it will replace the clipboard, which is no bad thing! It does need a camera though.

dave 93

theres an app for that...

I hear the sound of frantic back-pedalling!

El Reg, like all the other 'Bad Apple' pundits seem to be emulating idiomatic rats and donning swimsuits!

The clever money is betting on another Apple success, esp. now we see the apps in action.

Surprise, surprise - Apple software has a good UI, nice looking templates and the whole shebang is 'instant-on' with little danger from virus/malware thanks to the cursed 'closed ecosystem'

For $500 it's a no-brainer for ordinary folks who like to get stuff done on the move, but in style.

iPad nearly had video conferencing?

dave 93

Skype not popular?

I just checked, and there are 22 million Skype users online. Admittedly a lot will be voice only, but if your computer has a camera, Skype sets it up automatically, and nearly all new computers ship with a camera.

I also suspect that the iPad will ship with a camera. Web class cameras costs pennies, and let users 'spread the word' which is all good for Apple.

dave 93

What we want, when we want it, preferably for free

This article is 180 degrees out. People really do want software doo-dads for pennies.

There are so many more customers now, that software doesn't need to be expensive to make a profit. Distribution is key, and easy access 'app stores' are the future.

Nice to see we can comment on Orlovski pieces again ;-)

There are SIM adaptors available

Oh please, just get on with your lives

OK, they released it, It is what it is, and it isn't what it isn't. Get over yourselves and actually find new stories about new stuff.

No one forced all the tech news outlets to keep hyping it in advance of the launch, you did that all yourselves. Lazy boys get lots of hits tho.

For what it is worth, I think it looks like a pretty useful bit of kit at a reasonable price.

The real tech news angle is that it uses an Apple SoC CPU - that, at least, is something new, and a canny move to protect their IP investment as you can't just copy and crack a piece of hardware so easily.

Oh yeah, the iPhone/Touch does seem to be quite popular with users, despite (or maybe because of?) the twatphone, jesusphone mudslinging from some quarters. Go figure...

Come back in a year and see what happened to the iPad.

Remember - you do not have to buy one if you don't like it.
