At around £30 for a part to be printed by a 3rd party, vs 3p to do it myself, I only need to print about 20 prototypes to have reached my ROI.
And no decade wait required.

By thhe pictures their octocopters would be able to carry a approx 2kg payload ok.
But there is no way it will every be able to do that in the UK - CAA ANO is very clear on proximity to building and people.

rather amazingly they fetch a fortune on ebay. 2 on there just now for 400 quid each.
I bought one in 2001 when I got the nostalgia bug - it had all the bits - picasso card, etc,etc... would have cost many 1000s in the day.
But after a brief play with, it ended up sitting gathering dust again. so it got sold to the next nostalgia buff.
As of now, the garage has:
1x zx81
1x rubber key spectrum
1x 128k spectrum
1x QL (in original box, etc... but keyboard flecked)
1 original apple mac (with external HD)
1 later apple mac with HD
1 apple mac iifx and monitor.

Well.. my dad worked at British Telecom (yeh.. it wisnae BT at that time).
He brought it home for me to play with for a few months (which I suppose shows how much use he was putting it to).
Frankly though, as a 14yo I thought it was pretty cool. He'd brought back an IBM PC before and that was dire - even my spectrum seemed more exciting than that.
But this had colour, and microdrives, and ... a phone and modem FFS.
In the UK that was pretty unheard of... actually later that summer I won a microtel (?) modem in a competition for my spectrum and was 'surfing' prestel and micromonkey800 (summit like that).. downloading software and all sorts which seemed pretty awesome at the time.
but I digress, I liked the Merlin - it felt like a proper computer.
I soon got bored, the spectrum got swapped for a 6128, and it I wouldn't be 'online' again at home till I'd left home and started work and got 'the internet' in 93.
I did one (and still have it) on an acer A150 (I have another one still running windoze - see other post).
I even made the LCD back apple light up thing...he could help with the painting, etc.
hell, I even internally crammed in a tv card, GPS, bluetooth and HD acceleration into mine.

I still run an old acer one A150 1.6 atom glued (literally) to the back of the 42" LCD in the conservatory.
With the broadcom it can play all 720p and 1080p movies you throw at it.

The majority of films and TV use apple gear when computers are required - I imagine because they look cool.
Since apple don't pay for product placement EVER though most will have the apple logos covered up. Some even have them running linux. e.g. supernatural (logos covered, linux). Some don't bother though and have the apple showing. e.g. 30 rock.
However, MS DOES do pay for product placement - it's the only way they can get em on the screen. Usually in partnership with Dell. e.g. elementary with it's crappy surfaces, or smallville and it's Dells everywhere.
You don't see it so much now, but a few years ago when they were flogging Bing to death there was a spate of tv and films that had people using Bing for searches, and even worse dialog like 'let me just bing that'. e.g. spiderman.

at 120 quid for 16gb, its a steal. plus sd card slot, HDMI out, etc, etc
I got one for the parents. It is absolutely excellent (I have mk1 nexus7 and it's faster than that for regular stuff).
So the general tablet buyer in has a 7" hudl for 120 quid vs 230 quid* for ipad 16gb (non retina)
90 quid more for retina.
So nearly double the price of a hudl even for the non-retina.
I'll be interested to see how they both compare over xmas - I can tell you that my parents love the hudl, and wouldn't have loved the ipad any more (less actually as they were used to android and it was all familiar, no expansion for me to give me movies on an SD card, etc).
*20 quid off 200 quid tablets, and 30 quid off 300+ tablets at tesco till next week, so the cheapest place to buy an ipad of any description I think at the moment..... I gave in yesterday and bought a 32gb ipad air.

So... First Direct have now changed the way you log on for internet banking..
old way:
- combination of answer to common question (low security, easily phished). i.e. what was the name of your school (oh - lets have a look of facebook, etc)
- entering 3 character of your password (pretty high security providing proper password naming rules applied)
new way:
- you MUST use a secure key (either physical one or one on your phone - which they call an 'electronic secure key as if the other one isn't electronic....)
- same answer to common quesiton required
- enter secure key code
thats it - you are now in and can steal all my money.
Now, whenever I have used secureID type keys before they are an additional level of security - I still need my regular password as well - e.g. VPN use for company, etc, etc.
Here, they have TAKEN AWAY the password !!!
so lose yer phone (or physyical key) and thief simply needs to guess (or easily find on the phone or social media) your answer to common question, and they are in.

The only person this seems to protect is First Direct! - what ? you got all your money stolen ? Did you lose your phone (yes), did you tell us immediately (no... I didnn't realise it was lost/stolen till next day).. well that's not our problem is it - you've been careless, tough shit.
What they CAN say, is that without the secure key its less likely someone can get into your account - but with proper password security this was unlikely anyway.
they are just covering their arse, and giving the end user a far less secure service that before.
So, for me, thats the end of internet banking. I can still do some stuff without a secure key and will just have to call them when I want to do other things.

Quality is a horrible word. Pirsig got it right.
Your example doesn't.
Quality is a variable - whatever you are 'engineering'.
However to most 'software engineers' it is a constant. either on or off. They simple lack the understanding or technical skills to apply it variably. If there is one single 'gift' that makes a good engineer it is this thorough understanding of the concept of quality.
It is this that allows engineers to build a car that costs 10k or one that costs 100k, even though they do the same job.
To most software engineers (and I admit I am brushing you all with the shitty stick, but in my 20 years in the industry I can count the number of real engineer thinkers on one hand) the idea of building a piece of software that is not 'as good as it can be' is an anathema. They do not even understand what is wrong with this thinking. Their 'cars' will always cost 100k given the leeway - hence the need for someone with sense (the 'manager' in your example) to intervene.
It is not 'managers' who should make this call - it is the absolute corner stone of what makes a good engineer.
I used to work with a doctorate of IT - I told him that as a EEE when tasked with building an audio amplifier for example, I would take the specs, and see how I could best design something that was within the price range, and broadly met the specs - I'll select components that existed, and make approximations and trade offs. So, for example having calculated that I needed a 2.1K ohm resistor I would choose a 2.2k ohm, since it is commonly available, etc. I would end up having built something which met the requirements. In the real sense of the word - the quality was ideal for the solution.
My Dr friend maintained that this was not 'as good as it could be', and applying his software engineering to it, he would have designed and built a 2.1k ohm resistor, etc. It was only because of price that I had gone down this route, not good engineering. He maintained that his amp would be better, if more expensive.
At this point I felt like an athiest trying to convert a chistian, so gave up.

On the other hand, If chip design was handled by 'computer scientists' we'd all be sitting reading this on the worlds shittiest computer, while one of the fuckwits explained how they were making the next model from the ground up because the chips 'didn't quite do what they wanted to do', and this time would be using the one true methodology* to built it.

I have a pair of VR920s.
they are 640x480 each eye, motion sensors.
they are rubbish.
Short of making the stuff cheaper by using one single big old 720p LCD panel rather than micro panels I really fail to see what is so 'game changing' about oculus ? crap resolution only a bit better than the vr920s (though as they have far larger Fov the perception is resolution in vastly lower.
Strange they missed out the killer feature??
At present your two options are:
- strapping 2 gopros back to back (170 degrees each, so a 20 degree deadband)
-using a 360 degree lens like http://www.0-360.com/
I have both - the gopro suffers from sync issues and the deadband, the 360 lens is large and awkward, difficult to mount and get good results with a compact camera, very poor resolution once you process.
The immersion you get from 360 video is pretty amazing - it's best watched as regular video, but with you in total control of where you look (works great on a phone with gyros) - basically it is like a portal into the scene with you able to look at anything you want.

I was firmly in the 'meh' camp.
But I've played with it in the airports the last week or so, and it really is surprisingly different from the old one (which is still being sold - old stock, next to it in dixons, etc).
It feels too light to be full of stuff. Kinda deserves it's Air moniker.
And the fluidity of moving webpages and images about - zooming in and out, panning, etc is uncanny.
But for me it falls into the 'I really want one, but I can't actually tell you why' camp... my old nexus 7 does everything I want, albeit a bit slower and clunkily.
As the author says it seems to have got to some 'magical' point where the lightness and shrinkage has made it into a different device entirely - a usable ebook reader with one hand, etc.
From a technical point of view it really is pretty amazing in the flesh rather than on paper/specs - I sort of feel like I'm holding something from star trek TNG.

and it has 9 litres.
So it's getting around 45/50 mpg effectively if you were to just continually fill it up with petrol and have it maintain the 3.5% left in battery.
If that is true, then its managing to generate enough leccy from a 650cc engine to power the car.
125kw motor... now there is no way it's managing that.

no argument there - wasn't suggesting it did. I was suggesting that old electronic geeks might prefer the arduino over RPI - more instant feedback and ability to prototype physical ideas quickly.
arduino isn't just about 'turning LEDs on and off' - arducopter for example is an open source project implementing an amazingly complex and advanced autonomous flight controller in one arduino.
You can do a hell of a lot with an arduino - it's really in a different ball park from an old PIC chip.
I've posted this before, but still relevant:
- for those 'electronic engineers'* like me who occasionally dabbled in home electronics and want to get back into it:
- get an arduino nano (7 quid). It comes ready to plug into a 2 quid breadboard, USB to PC (or mac, etc) and you can be running your first program in 10 minutes (lovely basic IDE to write your app in C or C++)
digital input/outputs, analogue input/output, serial comms - it does the lot.
I've done a bunch of projects so far, the latest being my home made Sous Vide temp controlled cooker.
I love the simplicity. most sensors (serial comms) can be had for a couple of quid - everything from light, sound, etc to altimeter and carbon monoxide. easy control of motors, servos, steppers, relays.
really, the world is your lobster.
I work away from home out of a hotel all week at the moment, and have a Tupperware box full of arduinos and sensors, pocket digital oscilloscope, etc and wile the nights in to hotel away creating my latest 'inventions'**
*i.e. got a degree in electronic engineering 20 years ago, and have worked in IT ever since.
**I do wonder if the cleaner sees the box whether she'll think I'm making a bomb or something right enough, so hide it back in my luggage when I leave for work in the morning!
I've had a 15" retina since they came out.
I also make use of QuickRes app to get access to actual pixel resolutions rather than the dumbed down 'best more retina, more space, etc' options you get in OSX.
The most real estate option give you 1920x1200 effective resolution (i.e. your internal rendered 4k resolution which is then displayed on the panel).
It is the resolution I usually run the panel at and provides a nice sharp picture (which takes some getting your head around since you are running an LCD at a non-native resolution which was always a no no until now).
but you are not getting access to the native 2880 x 1800.
Using QuickRes you can set that. This results in a true 2880x1800 desktop (i.e. looks similar to my imac27).
This does make everything tiny, but for some coding across multiple windows, FCPX while using multiple 'tracks', some photoshop work with lots of windows it is awesome.
Another reason is that the 1920x1200 resolution doesn't work as a user would expect with 'retina aware' apps. I expected this to be fixes by now tbh, but it never has been....
for example If I have a true 2880x1800 photo, and I am running 'best for retina' mode (i.e. my desktop real estate, etc all looks like 1400x900), when I open a retina aware app like photoshop, and view my picture '1 to 1' it will take up the screen exactly (not twice the height of screen). i.e. the OS knows that certain frames should not be doubled and antialiased but have the contents rendered 121 for pixels on the screen.
If I now use QuickRes to change to 2880x1800 resolution, and do the same thing, I get the same results as far as viewing the picture is concerned (it takes the full screen), but now all the OSX menus, etc are all rendered 121 too - so I can get much more of that stuff on the screen (i.e it acts as a regular screen before retina doubling stuff started muddying the waters)
If however, I choose the furthest right OSX 'more space' resolution (which as described above is effectively 1920x1200 as far as OSX furniture, menus, text, buttons, etc is concerned, internally it 'thinks' it is displaying at 3840x2400 (with 4 times as large OSX furniture, menus, texts, buttons, etc)
So the result when I again open iphoto and view my 2800x1800 picture is that it only takes up 2/3 of the screen in 'view 1 to 1' option. You have to in fact zoom in to 133% before you get a true 1 2 1.
this is the same with all retina aware apps. e.g. FCPx, PS CS6, etc. Its a bit of a pain to be honest and I'm amazed it has never been fixed. I mean the OS knows you are in 1920. It knows this is going to be rendered at 4k, so it knows that when displayed at native any retina aware screen windows need to be be scaled to 133% to be true... and yet we are now a full OSX version on and they have done FA to fit it.

Though it's true that I bet the majority of those accounts are just crap accounts created to get the trial products as previous OPs have pointed out.. I think the real problem here is that then, Adobe extending their selling model to 'the cloud' using these same crap accounts.
So users who originally had an unwanted adobe account they'd signed up to just get grab an eval of photoshop, 2 years later and now using the same account to control their monthly subscriptions to products with real money, etc.
What Adobe should have done imho is to have forced users to change passwords to meet more stringent password rules when they became 'real' accounts (with a credit card, etc).
I mean lets face it, the fact you have to sign up to same crap account just to get an eval is annoying enough - the last thing you want is to have to then go through 10 hoops of 'sorry it needs to contain letters and number', 'sorry it can't contain username', etc, etc - you are likely to just FO and download GIMP.

great little thing - fast, easy to use and setup - stuck in a 32gb micro SD with some movies on it for them, a 3 quid HDMI cable lets them plug it into their TV for iplayer, netflix (sharing my account). logged on as them, and set it all up with their mail, apps (I converted them to android phones from basic phones last year) in a few minutes.
had a fair number of tescos ads on the homepage, but easy to remove.
nice bright screen - nice and solid plastic that will withstand being dropped much better than an ipad.
and all for 120 squid. bargain.

I remember watching it's progress through 84 and it looking pretty cool.
By the time it came out though it was old hat.
Around the same time (June 85) the Atari ST came out.
I remember attending a computer show in glasgow that year - I had a CPC6128 having upgraded from my old speccy - and I thought it was pretty space age with the floppy drive...
then the paradigm shift of the Atari ST at the show:
- the first time I'd seen and used a mouse
- what seemed like an incredibly high res moving picture on the screen (my memory says it was some sort of waterfall - probably just with a rotating colour pallete but it looked amazing).
- windows on the screen, a desktop, etc.
it wasn't like the latest computer , it was (to my 14yo eyes) like I'd had a bycicle and someone just showed my a honda fireblade.
I ended up abandoning home computers after than for a few years in an attempt to be more 'cool' - taking up photography and playing keyboards (yeh.. I know - I was fighting the birds off with a shitty stick).
And when I came back to the fold in 88 it was with an Amiga 500.
However, the 2 paradigm shifts I remember were:
- watching the demo of the Amiga 1000 on MICRO on BBC
- seeing and playing with that ST for the first time.

Apple has already broken into the corporate world - just not yours by the sound of things.

hehe... and after Virgin's upgrades of a few weeks ago have upped my speed to around 125Mb/s..
damn - that will take me somewhere around 10 minutes to download :-p
