Standard smartphone charger to dominate in two years

Heff
FAIL

what the hell am I talking about?

Err, what you're essentially proposing here is 'that instead of using wheels, why dont we design and build our own aeroplanes?'

I also dont buy that it has to be limited to 5 watts. you're using the port hardware, not the standard*, whilst you could, in theory, charge it with a standard USB-to-microusb cable, I'd imagine that an Outlet-charger-to-micro-usb could, supply as much power as you liked. its a transformer and a pair of copper wires, yanno? you could even incorporate communication between charger-and-device to negotiate the power supplied, though I have absolutely no idea how that'd work in practical terms.

Its sad that I know how much work port standards are but dont have a clue if you can even make variable-supply transformers. fail for my fail ^_^

*IDK the actual terms of the agreement.

Err, what?

"That situation is obviously unsustainable: we're going to have to pay more for our data, the only question is how we go about doing so. ®"

Its a cute little tag line, but the question is "why"? take a lookie here: http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-images/Technology/Pix/pictures/2008/02/01/SeaCableHi.jpg

ok, so thats from 2008. are you seriously trying to tell me that backbone data transfer has tripled in the last three years? I dont buy it. laying massive transcontiental and trans-plate cables is crucifyingly expensive, but the rest of the industry; data centers, local hubs, etc, seems to be making enough revenue as-is to keep up with demand quite handily and still turn a profit. or maybe domestic overheads are set to go up. only, I seem to remember reading articles about Dark fiber in the UK... so... mebbe not.

I dont mind a move back to the days where a true 'unlimited' account cost you a hundred quid a month because it was a 'small business' line*. but I dont think its necessary. If operators were honest with clients and the rest of the industry about their overhead-per-MB-to-end-user, and how that overhead is divided (connection charges, infrastructure maintenance, residual R&D, expansion, etc) then I think we'd see much less shitting and whining about charges.

I will cheerfully pay perMB to my ISP what it costs them to supply me with data, plus a reasonable % for profit. I simply dont buy for a second that this will be as expensive as this plan seems to suggest it is, as Im guessing this was assembled by some twat in marketing who put together a study panel to see what charges the market 'would support' rather than what charges 'is fair'.

Heff
Thumb Down

just what is going on with TV producers?

seriously, for the last 5 years we've been barking up the 1080/720 tree and now we're at 3dTV?

If I can buy a specialist WUXGA screen, why cant I have a WUXGA TV? If I can get a decent monitor with a high refresh rate, wide view angles, good response times, and incredible contrast, why is it whenever you ask for a TV with the properties of even a decent off-the-shelf plasma or LCD monitor people look at you like you've grown an extra head, and then tell you to "find a specialist supplier"

its nice that they're going for new tech and innovation and whatnot, but christ, can they get the stuff done right for whats already out there first?

OTOH, maybe Im just raging because I already wear specs and have no desire to wear another dorky set over the pair I already own just to watch TV (I suffer it for the movies sometimes, but Ive yet to see a single '3D' Flick that would justify buying a 3D TV.)

In reality I could give two fucks about the US state departments wants and needs of secrecy; Wikileaks could post something that basically says "Bush said fuck it, lets kill some Islamic goons for the hell of it" and I doubt there would be actually repercussions for those involved or even a change on how politics is carried out over here.

What makes me furious is that when any other country throws a shit-fit online (like Turkey, for instance) they fuck the internet up _for their country_. Turkey takes down youtube for turkey. not the entire goddamned world. Every time the USA throws a conniption fit It demands the entire internet cleave to its personal view, fucking up companies and individuals across the globe. I mean we mock people when they file lawsuits that say things like "I personally hold Bill gates, Steve Ballmer, Michael Dell, AOL Online and DARPA for the fact my computer got a virus on the internets" but seriously, thats the level of derp and wharrgarbl that the US keeps pulling.

ENOUGH, YOU BASTARDS! IT STOPPED BEING YOURS THE MOMENT A SINGLE DHCP SERVER WENT UP IN ANOTHER COUNTRY!

you'd think .com meant "entirely beholden to the USA" rather than "commerce", and personally if anonymous has to start physically visiting business addresses and slapping CEOs on the back of the head, I'm all for it.

Welcome

ten years ago a DDoS storm was nasty. now its the equivalent of a "fuck you"; if your backbone provider and server farm dont have a way of handling it* and your a multinational business then you need to start sacking people.

as for the rest of this? I think wikileaks might be the forerunner of events forcing global corporations to either finally become a whole view (we'll take anyones money for anything, fuck you, local government) or schizophrenic (Visa USA will not be sending assanje money, but we will route customers to our sister company, Visa Cayman Islands). it is only a matter of time before the big two and their backers start to turn around and go

"excuse me, why do we have to listen to these assholes, anyway? Fuck the DoJ, we could buy and sell those assholes. if they want to push us, send them a letter saying we can pull our entire shit out of their country and they need to watch their goddamned mouth"

I dont expect them to go to the wall for Assange, not in a million years, but I do expect some closed-boardroom-meetings to discuss _why_ they have to suffer the tantrums of individual countries.

*should be a hiccup, a 2-3 hour outage, nothing more.

Governments stonewall interwebs porn domain

Heff
Boffin

the word you are looking for here is 'yet'

"No one makes you take up a .xxx domain for your business."

Yet. in the Greater Sphere Of Things™ net neutrality is taking a fucking beating. content-ISPs in the Us and across Europe want to charge more for certain content. they lobby their governments and their governments lobby ICANN..e.g;

"we refuse to invest in the infrastructure necessary to roll out 8mps/max lines to every home in the UK unless you give us a reacharound with allowing us to charge for access to the BBCs' iPlayer tech, and youtube, and let us nerf torrent traffic."

The government doesnt want to pay for infrastructure, so its going to do its best to deal. non-internet-liberal governments (turkey, china, the islamic bloc) would love porn to be migrated to its own little ghetto online, so they can demand that their ISPs refuse to handle connections to that portion of the internet.

its much, much easier to blacklist *.xxx than "everything with fleshtones".

Your other, ZOMG .xxx will result in an explosion of porn are just behind the times in thinking that .xxx legitimises pornography online. I dont know what to say to these people; The internet is for porn, dude. perhaps some of their outrage is secretly borne of them living in a place where they might find their personal access to porn shuttered, so its less "there'll be an explosion of porn" and more "I'll have to justify why I should have access to a restricted service!!"

Bottom line: .xxx shouldn't be introduced. its a cute idea. it would have been cuter to have it with the original TLD stack and have those stacks enforced; .orgs for organisations .net for network providers, .com for commerce, .gov.AA for government/country websites, and so on and so on and so on... but if ICANN isn't going to regulate the 'proper usage' of TLDs, (something which is now an effectively impossible task) ICANN should NOT introduce one solely for pornography as all they would be doing is handing individual governments and ISPs a method for blacklisting and charging for extra content, as well as creating a problem in the future when governments start to lobby for "this porn problem to go away" - squeaky wheel gets the grease, and all that.

seriously ; you're creating a ghetto online for porn; for what purpose? where is the need? a sector of the marketplace and the people who lobby you find it objectionable? whats next, china wants a .dem TLD for pro-democracy websites? well, they have what, 2 billion people, you should totally treat that request seriously, right?

Heff
Thumb Down

Perhaps

those pious hand-wringers would be better served by accompanying their children online, perhaps realising that absentee parenting and leaving the children to be raised by television and the internets isnt such a supersmart plan anyway.

I'd point them in the direction of windows* 7 and Vistas UAC controls, or any of the well promoted 'internet nanny' programs. of course, that would require that these whiny, spineless responsibility-averse mouth breathers take 10 minutes out of their day to learn something about how PCs and the internet work, rather than writing a whiny letter to the Daily Fail.

Its a little depressing that their new HQ was designed around the concept of enduring cuts and subletting stuff, but thats a model that should be extended to all branches of government, and I applaud their resourcefulness and honesty.

I for one wish them the very best of luck, and wish that all governmenty offices had the same practical ROI approach to doing work.

* smut films aren't made with real people

-the smut I watch is. porn stars are funny-lookin.

* I've read elsewhere but please don't ask for the citation that it's the women who choose their men and their preference changes over the cycle

-true, but you cant keep a chick unless you can appeal to them for the majority of the 4-week rollercoaster unless you found one with acute short term memory loss.

* what women think men find attractive and what men think is attractive are often very different things. We don't notice haircuts, jewellery, the myriad shades of pink and especially not shoes. Personality does count a bit.

I notice. If you cant dress yourself and look like you were made over by a retarded clown, Im not interested, no matter how stereotypically hot you may be in other areas; persnal appearance is a chance for me to gauge how in touch with reality you are (fitting into a size 6 and being a size 6 are not the same things) whether or not you're colourblind (nice green and purple eyeshadow, there) and whether you have compatible sense of aesthetics : If Im going to be sharing kids and a home with you, you better not be trying to rock lime-green slingbacks encrusted with pink rhinestones. I'm not saying you have to look like a cover girl, Im not even trying to suggest that aiming for that 'would be nice', but to say that guys dont notice when women make an effort is pretty disingenuous.

we all want a nice woman with a warm hands and a good heart! we dont care what she looks like! YMMV, but I prefer a woman who can dress herself, doesnt look or act like a spaz, and when all other non-physical 'needs' are ticked off the list Im going for the hottest woman I can find 'in my bracket', and so far the girls Ive talked to about this do the same.

What Lusty said, really. IBM still owns all the patents id had back from the days where you bought a Tandy, Adlib, or 100% IBM compatible clone machine, and they've only done more research (begatting more patents) since then.

as the article, the only thing I don't grasp is why use 130 for the CMOS and 65 for the optics, am I missing something fundamental and simple here? I also don't buy the 100 mill interconnects thing. thats as future-anachronistic as the old shot of "what a home computer may look like" back when Valves and DIY-soldering was bleeding edge nerdcraft. I think by the time optics-on-chip becomes a manufacturing reality you'll see more innovations in the field, and the number will drop accordingly.

as for everything else, Its interesting that the base hardware is only 35 quid. at launch is already has problems with image and control resolution, and with hardware this basic I dont anticipate some sort of 'hotfix' to suddenly make it magical and win.

I understand that MS needed to corner the market otherwise Sony and nintendo were essentially going to be unassailable on the "jump around" gamers front, but I think they pitched the marketing way too high for the capabilities of the hardware; but hey, maybe they'll launch uprated hardware in a years time, after getting people hooked into a line of titles they like? much like nintendo did with the improved wiimotion/wiimote thingies.

thats assuming decent titles are made for it; you can have the nicest hardwar ever, but if nobody makes you any nice games... well, then its the Atari jaguar all over again, isnt it?

I dont hate green, I hate stupid.

I hate green advocates that cant do math, or tell me to use CFTs because encouraging the replacement of tungsten and glass in a landfill with glass and mercury is a fucking great idea; they're the same people that jog to work down the side of the road, sucking down benzine and free radicals from everyone elses exhaust. Good for you. way to think it through. the people who cry about PCBs emitted from circuit board but will cheerfully hotbox themselves in freshly-painted rooms.

you want to reduce pollution in cities, use something even more energy-efficient than an EV: a GD pushbike, a bus, or the train. its as bad is the greentards in the US that urge me to turn off my lights to save power but crank their AC down to 60' and leave all their doors open inside their homes, or the greentards in the UK that yell abuse at the royals for tooling around in ancient landrovers that do 14mpg rather than buying a brand new all-aluminium POS.

I dont hate greens. I hate dumb people that cant do comparison math, dont understand the difference between compressors and lights, dont understand the idea of "production debt" in an 'energy efficient' product, dont understand how energy intensive aluminium production is, how environmentally devastating exotic mineral production is.

Seriously. before anyone should be allowed to be an advocate for "green" _anything_ they should be forced to read up on SAX and get a calculator.

right, use the tiny percentage of 'green' energy* we produce in an energy-costly process to produce a gas you need to compress and cool to store, requiring more energy, and has a pretty shitty energy density/volume compared to say; petrol.

thats without even getting into how you plan to produce said hydrogen. and if you say Carbon Sequestration Im just going to start laughing. Thermochemical processes as well as having industry-unhelpful biproducts arent really ready for industrial application and we get most of our Hydrogen from steam + methane reforming. anode-based electrolysis hasnt made it out of the lab because you're either constantly swapping out your electrodes due to oxidisation or you're running inert-metal electrodes (usually platinum) which are a) fucking expensive and b; dont solve the other problem of water electrolysis; you need pure water otherwise you're looking at salt deposits, so you have to distill out your water which requires even more energy.

Hydrogen as a 'green fuel' is decades away.

you create a subdomain for "porn only" and pretty soon you're challenging porns rights to register under any other TLD, probably "for the children", because nobody ever stands against that arguement. we roll that logic down the line and pretty soon you're looking at paying your ISP for access to "restricted" or "premium" domains. and as soon as you create a precedent for non-psycho countries* filtering net access, you're effectively legalising ISPs saying "nah. not gonna let you have the bbc's iPlayer. not going to let you near hulu. sure as hell not going to let you send UDP/IP and torrent traffic. eventually you'll be back at the model of the internet that AOL tried to sell the common man 15 years ago, where we only typed into their 'portal' and used keywords, not URLs, and pretty much only ever saw what they chose to link us to.

built on forward-control 101s, actually. not landrovers. Originally made by the same firm, but not, repeat NOT the same thing at all.

cant help but feel the most practical application would be a disposable chassis and some form of coupling. picture a tractors UC slung under an apache, plugged into a skidpan with monster truck tires on. failing that, rocket motors up and then glide-autorotor away.

Apple now world's second-largest company

Um, no.

sorry, I dont follow the specious logic that gives the entire blame and credit for a company to the CEO. I refuse to demonise Bill Gates for the performance and business ethics of MS. I refuse to lionise Jobs over Apples turnaround. I refuse to demand the public lynching of Tony Hayward just because the Transocean fuckup happened on his watch. Life isnt as simple as "CEO = Jeebus".

so yes, If you cant see that the success of a company isnt wholly dependant on the presence of one man, then I can only hope the other conclusions you reach in life aren't as wrong as that.

It has gone to his head.

Johnathan Ive, not Steve-hai-buddy-i-blacklist-ur-apps-nau-Jobs is responsible for apples market share. Every single design decision apple has made since 1998* has been a direct descendent of his design model and the spin off items since have been market derivatives, Compaq All-in-ones to imac,s Diamonds Rio players (remember those?) to ipods.

Jobs isnt a visionary. Jobs is a tool riding a minimalist design ethos thats now 13 years old.

*portentially 96 or 96, Ive no idea of the internal turnaround on the design before it was marketed.

AT&T chief: 'All your iPhone are belong to us'

Heff

they aint that sticky

the majority of people I know with Iphones are on AT&T because they wanted the device, not the carrier, some are even in areas where AT&Ts signal coverage never extends to 3G anyway.

all verizon would need to do to offset it would be to do some sort of plan where you trade in your old Iphone for a 4g from them, and they cover your subscription severance and lock you into a 2-year contract. Hell, if its technically possible, let them keep their old phones, cover their subscription severance and lock em into a 2year contract.

If all verizon has to do to net 20% of AT&Ts iphone customers is cover their subscription severance, then Im pretty sure they'll find a way to do it.

the glory of celebrity bling.

may as well have written "is coated in low-grade machine-cut trash we couldn't sell through a diamond-centric market but feel we can get more selling it to stupid E! Celebs* rather than bunging it in the industrial market."

* Kardashians, Paris, every other vapid whorebag I see on TV whose sole reason for celebrity is somehow just "being famous"
