UK council yanks IT systems and phone lines offline following cyber ambush

David 155

Re: Ah, the good old UK public sector!

I think you'll find they employ plenty of private sector consultants too.

'What's the point of me being in my office, just because they want to see me in the office?'

David 155

solved our lack of space problem

Before covid our organization had a major lack of space problem, if you werent using a space you'd lose it. Millions were spent on refurbishment, reorganising and letting additional office space. But now we've got hotdesking and WFH the place is half empty. They're still trying to drag us back into the office.

Facebook bans sharing of news in Australia – starting now – rather than submit to pay-for-news-plan

Virgin Media adds 200% to its new broadband contracts in 2020, slips back in black (just)

David 155

sounds familiar

This all sounds painfully familiar. My price for 200mbps will soon rise to around £45.

After 30 mins on hold I was told theres nothing they can do. For about an hour could not get any sense out of one of their chat people about a 'deal' being offered to me on their website for tv, phone and internet that was about £10 cheaper than current package. Despite not even wanting tv and phone I go through the wizard to order it anyway and on the last page the price is £19 higher than advertised- that'll be the line rental and believe it is not legal anymore to show prices which exclude this.

Once openreach get around to upgrading the network in my area I'll be switching, not just because of the price but because the customer service is atrocious. Shame because the connection is decent.

Microsoft gets ready to kill Skype Classic once again: 'This time we mean it'

David 155

Forced updates

Any chance they will turn off the forced updates? Its quite annoying to get asked by users to update their Skype every week. The thing wont run if you're not on the latest version.

Still using Skype? Good news! After HOURS of meetings, Microsoft reckons it knows when you're Not Active

David 155

Update prompts

Yeah but when are they going to stop giving standard users admin prompts to update the thing? You'd think they'd know how their own os works.

Looks messy to me. In the video, he opens an app and the window size isnt big enough.

We cant go on with a windows 2000 start menu and UI forever and ever. There is definitely room for improvement, especially for users who dont have a touchscreen but I think most people will just get used to it.

Not done yet: Oracle to ship revised Java fix on February 19

David 155

Re: Any chance...

Was that added recently? In my experience it just notifies the user that there is an update available, but doesnt actually install anything and is useless for Standard/limited users anyway.

David 155

Any chance...

Of adding some auto update functionality?

N00bs vs Windows 8: We lock six people in a room with new OS

It looks like it was designed for touchscreens, presumably MS expect us to use new desktop touchscreen computers to be able to use it properly. But even then your average office worker would die of arm ache after half hour.

David 155

I dont see what the fuss is about

Its just an instant messenger and not even a free one! People like sheep have gone with bbm just because their friends are on it, without realising that there are multi platform equivalents available. But with all your pals chatting away, who is going to go out in the cold and leave first for an android or iphone?

National Rail Enquiries

David 155

The alerts function would be useful if it would automatically check for delays every day, rather than just the day you specify and only for a specific train. Unless its me....?

I'd also like to see an app that can combine national rail and the tube.

jack of all trades

Its like that episode of The Simpsons when Homer designs a car- they've just put everything on it. Its like they've got no idea what they actually want to do with it and just making the same psp mistakes(i love my 2000 series btw). For all its features there's not a single game that interests me though, yet...

BlackBerry BBM, email downed in epic FAIL

David 155

try the demo

thought the demo was utter crap.

Nothing like the original Driver. Many times i switched to a different vehicle and when i switched back my car had hit a wall. In one police chase I just sat still and the police drove right past.

The car handling left me cold, loose, light and arcadey. Someone said its more like Crazy Taxi than Driver, i agree!

RIM to turn in BlackBerry-using looters after London riots

David 155

Is it? From what i can gather you need to be signed up to Blackberry Internet Services for it to work, which costs money monthly, although it seems to be included within most data plans. Thats how i understand it anyway
