Just stop ok. a micro sim is plenty small enough.

Commodore outs Linux-running Amiga Mini desktop

Gordon 10

Oh ffs

Wtf are they playing at? That looks like a trashy far eastern oem mac-mini clone with some Amiga and commodore labels slapped on it.

If you are going to rip off a mac mini at least make it something better than I could pick up online myself.

If Nominet has spoken, you can't come here – High Court

Gordon 10
Stop

Re: I'm surpised

That's not what the article said. Essentially it said you aren't entitled to appeal to the court on about an abusive registration ruling if you have already chosen to use Nominets arbitration.

Why should the court be asked to opine on something that has no legal dimension? No contractual terms were broken, no crimes were committed.

Essentially they were saying we are not going to become the court of appeal for Nominets resolution service just because you don't like the result.

You have to wonder what the guy had at stake that he thought was worth taking this to the high court about.

'Now we understand what's required to explode a supernova' - NASA

Gordon 10

Re: Warning: agenda at work

Thats because those Nasa astrophysics boffins have no short term payoffs to gain - whilst Climate scientists have massive short term payoffs to gain. Not all of them are that veneal - but when your grant money rests on short term results then you are bound to be influenced.

It doesnt matter a jot whether the super-nova theory is wrong or right in the general scheme of things until we get out among the stars, which is unlikely with the luddites in charge.

I would also suggest that Physics is real science and the "science of climate change" falls somewhere between history, mathematical modelling, and spin doctoring.

Re: LTE not usable outside North America?

What's the LTE beef? The 4g iPad costs no more than the 3G iPad and it still works on 3g and 2g everywhere else.

So in summary I've paid nothing extra than I would have paid any way.

Foxconn is world's 10th biggest employer: 1.2 MILLION on payroll

Gordon 10

Interesting piece on the beeb

The beeb mentions the Foxconn suicides and notes that the reported suicide rate among their workers is significantly lower than the Chinese average. Now that average is for the whole population rather than the industry and I'm guessing that many more have happened offshift but it does make you think.

Apple iPad 3 packs LAPTOP battery

Everything Everywhere grabs UK 4G wheel, rivals thrown off bus

Gordon 10

Re: Scandal of 2011...

Agree it should have been contingent on agreeing to the 4g spectrum auction.

Gordon 10

Re: Frequencies

Erm maybe the fact that if you don't have a LTE network you will still have both 3G and 2g to fallback on kinda means 1800 not being a world wide band is a big deal in the short-medium term. Besides which no-one in their right mind who pays their own bills is going to be interested in paying the extortionate rates that 4g roaming will be at.

Gordon 10
WTF?

Sly poke

..in the eye for Vod and o2 who are fighting tooth and nail to keep the 2g spectrum they were awarded for free?

However not sure that the Regulator using an accident of logistics and business to define the initial 4G landscape is very professional.

Surely most of the progress towards a 4g auction could be solved by getting the respective network heads all in a room together and hammering out a deal?

Oh I forgot - its not about effecient use of spectrum its about a Quango justifying its existence.

I would say its also about maximising revenue from that spectrum for the Govt and Taxpayers, but they are making such a hash of it the concept is laughable.

iPad 3 benchmarked

Gordon 10

Re: Bit mapped thinking

You are missing the point. These "low power" GPU's are benefiting from 10+ years of GPU and HPC arms races and because of their highly parallel nature they are almost pre-optimised for low power simply by cutting down the number of units from their mainstream cousins.

They were *made* for this application baby!

The ipad 2 gpu capabilities were widely acknowledged as some of if not the best in class, with plenty of headroom for the future - even if there has been a drop in headroom I expect it to be marginal.

Gordon 10
FAIL

Bit mapped thinking

The 2x/4x graphics debate is very limited thinking. We've long passed the point where bitmap processing is the be all and end all of graphics processing.

Vector processing is king and the number of pixels is just a sideshow. name a credible graphics technology in the past 5 years that hasnt laughed at HD+ resolutions.

I'm betting that the iPad 3 is not only easily capable of pushing the extra pixels but also more capabable f juggling all the overheads associated with gaming jiggery pokery.

Microsoft talking turkey with OnLive over Office to iPad

Gordon 10

Baffled

The iPad already has dozens of office suites with ms compatability and with UI's built for touch and cloud storage support.

If I'm desparate to use office itself I can pay a one off fee for LogMeIn or similar to use the office installed on my desktop or laptop again which have UI's that help manage the touch to WIMP conversion.

Why on earth would I use Onlive at £5 a month?

FCC ponders: When is it OK to switch off networks?

Gordon 10

Not sure the UK summary is correct

To the best of my knowledge the Govt can ask the networks to switch alKulk(?) mode which prioritises specific sims across any network and ask the networks to close to normal punters for the duration of an emergency. Basically only people in possession of these sims can then make calls.

Typical people in possession of them are emergency series and armed forces and more prosaically members of the telcos DR/BC teams.

SeaMicro acquisition: A game-changer for AMD

As above. Time and again AMD have failed to leverage the industry trends to get a jump on Chipzilla and others or even come out with a credible alternative until the mass market has already arrived.

To whit :

Centrino

Atom

Cuda/Fermi

Arm (Tegra etc)

Missing many of these is no shame. Missing all of them - especially when they have in house knowledge is uttter, utter incompetence (in house knowledge = GPU's, SoC's etc)

Im a big AMD fan but it looks to me like they will continue to struggle for relevance in the Tween years of the decade.
