Microsoft yanks Windows code on GPL violation claim

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

No LGPL does not give you the permission to abuse

> The LGPL does not require any kind of notice or copyright statement, and it is completely fine to

> use LGPL code in a proprietary project without any reference whatsoever to the original author

quote

4. Combined Works.

You may convey a Combined Work under terms of your choice that,

taken together, effectively do not restrict modification of the

portions of the Library contained in the Combined Work and reverse

engineering for debugging such modifications, if you also do each of

the following:

a) Give prominent notice with each copy of the Combined Work that

the Library is used in it and that the Library and its use are

covered by this License.

b) Accompany the Combined Work with a copy of the GNU GPL and this license

document.

c) For a Combined Work that displays copyright notices during

execution, include the copyright notice for the Library among

these notices, as well as a reference directing the user to the

copies of the GNU GPL and this license document.

d) Do one of the following:

0) Convey the Minimal Corresponding Source under the terms of this

License, and the Corresponding Application Code in a form

suitable for, and under terms that permit, the user to

recombine or relink the Application with a modified version of

the Linked Version to produce a modified Combined Work, in the

manner specified by section 6 of the GNU GPL for conveying

Corresponding Source.

1) Use a suitable shared library mechanism for linking with the

Library. A suitable mechanism is one that (a) uses at run time

a copy of the Library already present on the user's computer

system, and (b) will operate properly with a modified version

of the Library that is interface-compatible with the Linked

Version.

e) Provide Installation Information, but only if you would otherwise

be required to provide such information under section 6 of the

GNU GPL, and only to the extent that such information is

necessary to install and execute a modified version of the

Combined Work produced by recombining or relinking the

Application with a modified version of the Linked Version. (If

you use option 4d0, the Installation Information must accompany

the Minimal Corresponding Source and Corresponding Application

Code. If you use option 4d1, you must provide the Installation

Information in the manner specified by section 6 of the GNU GPL

for conveying Corresponding Source.)

If you read that bit it clearly states what you need to do when using it in a combined work. Similar provisions in LGPL2.1. So yes you do need to give copyright notice if using and displaying a copyright notice of your own. And you can include parts in such a way as to dynamicaly link in which case the user may freely replace the lib with his own. If parts are built INTO the code then you need to provide those parts and accompaniyng code so that a user is free to build their own and the application would still work.

Observations

@sean oneil

Sorry to hear that but yes the market in 10 years time is what it is all about. And it would take an Oracle lawyer 30 minutes to prepare a statement that would actually help this move along.

@Andy Dent 2

WTH are you talking about?

GPL is Free Software(http://www.fsf.org) and Open Source(http://www.opensource.org) license. It is the main license of both since the start.

Please get your facts straight before spewing such nonsense. Unless you're one of those commercial entities that see Open Source only as free thing for "us to take and abuse" in that case please go crawl into a hole and wither away.

Hmm so both my online banking which uses client side certs and my cellco control panel which relies on client side certs would be vulnerable then... great... Sure glad that what the majority of people uses is safe. Not that it does them any good.

I'm less worried about MiM attacks then I am about a bank screwing up their system or me loosing the client cert.

I'm more thinknig Micros~1 tried to migrate it over to their sqlserver and it ran for half a day... then it made a disastorous crash... now they just need to pickup the old pieces and migrate the data back over to them.

They really shouldn't try anything like this. It's hilariously sad.

Never owned a TI calculator and never want to after this. I own a perfectly good casio with so many functions I seriously have no clue what I would need a TI for... Granted doesn't do graphs but more or less everything else under the sun. Casio FX-991W. It's an older model(pre 2k iirc) but is a great device. And still running on original batteries.

The way I see it they can't prevent me adding a faraday cage to my property(not specifically to the device but to the whole vehicle ;) ) and with that it would become near impossible for it to do much. I can always wire up anything I need to be specific in such a way.

What happens if you put a FAT32 usb drive into your ubuntu machine and try to write to it?

It just works. Even an NTFS one would just work. Though why would anyone in their sane mind want to use FAT/NTFS on flash storage I don't know...

iRiver e-book reader spied online?

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

After having my eyes bled out

by the lot of you.

Yes devices are to expensive, ebooks are overpriced(face it it should be LESS than a paperback volume - of course DRM crap costs so get rid of that).

I waited for quite a long time to buy an eInk reader. Why did I wait so long? not because of costs I like technology but I don't gobble it up insanely. I wanted to see how it works in life before buying and I have. So yes now I have one of these new fancy readers and I consider that EVERY HUMAN BEING ON THE PLANET should have one. Pre-loaded with everything from project guttenberg for a start. And any other Freely(and legaly) available ebook along with scholary texts(history,science,etc...) and offline wikipedia and other such references.

This is what will eventually improve the world. People learning from the past to not make the same mistakes. It would mean people actually learn not just consume. Let people learn about anything they want and they will be able to improve themselves, their surroundings, help the people around them and in the end improve everything.

Anyway this is my own personal opinion and if you disagree it's your problem not mine ;)

Erm... so basicaly they shouldn't be punished for doing this?

Bad news for society sadly. A monopoly on creative works is really the worst of the worst. Luckily there's a TON of people who actually want to do good for society and create things for nothing:

FSF launches Windows 7 anti-upgrade letter campaign

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Please please please...

STOP using Open Source when it comes to the FSF... they HAVE NOTHING with Open Source(merit based stuff) but they do with Free Software(a philosophy that claims computer programs should be free for all, to use, modify, distribute, etc...).

I for one support and respect the FSF. They do great work and bring various issues to the attention of many people.

As for GNU+Linux on the desktop. Ubuntu does a great job with that as does Fedora and others. I've switched my mom first to Source Mage but after that to Xubuntu. Suffice it to say I hardly ever need to assit her with anything more troublesome than how to use some more advanced function in Openoffice which I would need to do in MSOffice as well. But even that is becoming rare as she learned that OO.o help is very good and just reads that.

I only need to install an app or two but even that I started slowly teaching her how to do. She already runs her own updates. But she tends to really use only a few apps so new apps aren't that important.

May Freedom always be with you.

FCC to vote on US mobile competition probe

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Hmm around here in .si

We get:

200 eur up front for the phone(N95) more than a year ago(for a 2 year contract)

~5eur/month for basic service(no free calls or free sms)

+3-18eur/month for 3g data(from 20MB to 20GB) there was unlimited for 16eur a month ago but they replaced that with the 20gb limited service.

So the yearly cost around here would be(split over 2 years) around 380 eur... If I drop data completly then only 160eur/year.

Partial right

Individualism on it's own isn't a bad thing. Infact it should be something that is thought to everyone. How to think with your own head distinguish yourself from others and so on.

What is bad is that most people now-a-days don't. Sad but true.

What he is proposing is that people get to togheter without trying to kill each other and have some fun time without all the gadgets etc... It's sad when you see two people sitting side by side each texting to the other what they are thinking.

Yes it makes is easier for some people. I know IRC and the interactions online made me a better person overall but I didn't have 20billion people as my friends. I don't feel to odd now in groups and it actually thought me good team work and so on. It's all about how one takes the technology and how one uses it.

I hardly use my cell phone... But I used to use it a lot. Simply no need for me. If I want something from someone chances are I'll go to that person directly and talk in person.
