Google's Nexus One sales still sluggish

James Dunmore

Not Bad

Considering it's not on a network yet. It'll be interesting to see the sales once Voda get it up and running soon; also I don't think people are as "iPhone crazy" and will wait for current contracts to end before upgrading... a lot of android fans have already jumped on the magic/hero/droid bandwagon, so it'll be 18month or so until they can change phones again.

HTC Hero to get Android 2.1 update in March

James Dunmore
Stop

Magic...?

Will, as originally reported, the update work on the HTC Magic. Us early adopters have been (pretty much) shafted.

I know I could root/mod my phone, but really that is not what I want to do (voids warranty), but seems increasingly like I'm going to have to.

Hate to say it, but if the current (bad) treatment of existing customers continues, I can only see the iPhone route as a viable option next time around (I don't want to buy a new phone, then 6months later find the software doesn't update).

Google to ape Apple with Nexus One 3G patch

Beta

Why didn't they just "do a google" and slap a beta tag on the phone - problem solved!

But seriously, who buys brand new stuff straight away, you always wait a few weeks for the patches, etc.

Biro is spot on

i.e. windows & a biro - never works when you need it to, only works half the time, randomly explodes on you, everyone in the office has one but is envious of the bloke with the posh pen (mac), or always working pencil (linux).

2 engines

Please, correct me if I'm wrong - but on the Eurostar, there is an engine at the front and at the back? Surely both can't of failed in exactly the same way (for a start, the venting would be around the other way, and the bit at the back would have had all the debris blown away by the rest of the train?).

So, erm, couldn't they just fire it up and go backwards?!

Just scored 100/100 on the acid 3. Nice.

Not quite as polished as FF, few features kind of missing (well, probably more "different") but a great 2nd choice browser - contender for default !

Should you lose your religion on your CV?

James Dunmore

Remove Age

I was told to remove my Age from my CV, but it doesn't take a genius to work it out - given I had dates of A levels, Uni degree, then work details that followed straight on - granted it wasn't accurate but it wouldn't take a genius to work it out.

But at the end of the day, where do you draw the line - do you not include hobbies? what if your hobbie is church groups, etc.? Goes back to the religion thing doesn't it. At the end of the day, a CV should describe you AND your work - and if something is part of your life, don't be scared to hide it.

Android version 2 gets an SDK

James Dunmore

@Eponymous Cowherd

It's well easy to put a different ROM on your phone - I could put the HTC sense on the magic if I fancied it (which I don't).

I'm more than sure that once 2.0 is out, someone will backport the 2.0 ROM.

Anyway - Vodafone/HTC to not control upgrades for "with google" phones such as the magic/g1, therefore it is up to google to push the upgrade - which I'm more than sure they will - the reference to upgrades of existing is probably related to custom builds, such as the sense interface.

NewsNow tells newspapers: Lay off the legal action

James Dunmore
WTF?

Newspapers have missed the point

The site isn't aggregating and republishing the news, they are showing headlines from multiple sources - it can only go to have more hits for the papers - it's just like an online newsagent really.

A great example of this is me - I'm not a guardian reader (left wing propaganda!) but I often read really good articles on there because I found them via newsnow - so they get increased readership.

Erm, like what?! I haven't found anything not available (other then US only items on the app market). Sure networks block a few apps, but generally, everything works.

A friend has the Hero - again, everything is working on it.

Good review. The phone is really like a magic ver2, or a g1 ver3. The HTC interface is really nice, although I prefer the vanilla android; but I hope some of the sense features are ported into donut/android 2.0

Will cloud put traditional hosters out of business?

James Dunmore

Comparision would be great....

Some situations showing different costs would be good - although that could be quite complex depending on needs - ranging from small business, to large enterprise business - to people like me - someone hosting a handful of websites for friends and family, etc. (and like to have a server to "play" with) who's bandwidth and resource needs are next to nothing.

It did take me a long time to work out which solution was best for me (price vs all the options) - if some form of "here is a platform, we only charge per month for what you use" was out there, that'd be great (as mentioned, I hardly put a strain on resources (simple LAMP stack) and a couple of gig's of disk space).

Microsoft's Windows 7 price gamble - and why it's flawed

Opera slams Microsoft's Windows 7 E move - again

It's not the bundeling

It's the ability (or lack of) to remove it, 100%.

On ubuntu, I can rip out firefox in a few clicks (although saying that, I probably couldn't remove web capabilities out of gnome's nautilus - but I could remove Gnome and chose a different desktop)

However, a browser is so integral to a PC now days, I think it is a bit silly to complain.

I guarantee though, we'll soon forget about this one... the next will be google complaining that bing is the default search engine.

Ubuntu brings Google Android apps to netbooks

Hardly Rocket Science

Good idea, good stuff, but not ground breaking...

I downloaded and installed the android SDK, and had an android phone interface running on my (Ubuntu) Desktop within 5mins. Now, not saying it's easy, but surely it's just porting that emulator, and making it display in native desktop, rather than in the emulator window?!

(okay, tweaks to the input interface too, but generally speaking, not ground breaking as I said!)

But on a positive note - should be brililant - bring more apps to both linux desktop and the android phone.

It's brilliant - can't put it down.

Only niggles - suppose with Android, is that more wigets should be default - for example, toggle wifi, gps, bluetooth, etc.

It's great advertising that you can buy now, but why would I buy it now without the tried and trusted el-reg review?

I'm quite sold with the phone (google fan), and it's the cheap man's iPhone, but still waiting for the reg review before I decide it is the phone I want.

2 years is a long time for a phone contract, but on the pricing, TCO (I think) is cheaper than a iPhone on 2 year contract (for a similar text+minute package), even if you include the price of a 16gig memory card.

Okay, 1 or 2 stores might have had "queues" or staff paid to walk around making it look busy - but it was well documented - on this site for starters - that the hype was a fraction of what was expected.

James Dunmore

@more competition for the iPhone?

(I could be wrong but ...) I remember reading that uptake of android has been quicker than the iPhone was. iPhone didn't really get going until the 3g came out almost a year after the first iteration was out - and even then, remember the empty O2 stores....

Android only been out 6months, on not a great looking hand set - hopefully there will be 2 or 3 more nice handsets out by the end of the year; then allowing time for peoples 18month contracts to end and move to android, it'll start tapping away at the iPhone market big time.

The pricing of the HTC Magic looks more than competitive against the iPhone - and (as I said) hopefully 2 or 3 other phones will follow by the end of the year - and then the bang wagon should start rolling
