Gillard makes tech key part of re-election bid

"FAIL" yourself.

"...most likely slower than 4G."

Except when:

1) Your mobile cell is congested. See: Australian telcos and populated areas.

2) The above doesn't even matter because your house is in a dead zone.

3) You want an actual usable download allowance without remortgaging your kidneys.

I like how you spin providing consumer choice as "crippling" the network. Well played. Early indications are that take-up of the higher speed tiers is much higher than predicted, but let's wait and see what actual long-term take-up rates are before we condemn the entire network, shall we?

What more do you want?

"I have 2 of these bad boys"

Congratulations

"What more do you want?"

Accurate colour reproduction is always nice for colour monitors, and that's before you move your head a few degrees off-axis. There's a noticeable colour shift across the screen of even small TN monitors simply because they subtend a non-zero angle within the user's field of view. The pixel density is poor by today's standards. About the only thing it's got going for it is that it's not 16:9.

Re: Tanuki

Is that a true 1536x2048 or a heavily aliased 1536x2048? There aren't many CRTs out there with near enough dots for 1536x2048, regardless of whether it's supported by the drivers.

Solar Thermal

"Solar thermal" simply describes any system that extracts heat from sunlight for use as an energy source, with or without transport. The CSIRO system uses a "power tower" to collect the solar energy, with air as the working fluid driving a gas turbine engine to generate electricity, but not all solar thermal systems use air as the working fluid, and electricity is not always the end product. A roof-mounted solar hot water system also counts, as a fairly domestic example.

Hydrolastic/Hydragas

Not being from The Old Country I've never encountered a car with hydrolastic or hydragas suspension. It sounds like it's great for small cars, so can anyone tell me why it's not found on modern cars? Made obsolete by advances in "conventional" suspension design? Too expensive? Hilariously unreliable and/or a nightmare to maintain?

Re: Goat Jam

Would that be the "rampant leftism" that caused the "global financial crisis"?

Or two unending wars in the middle east?

Or the fact that in many countries it is still dangerous to be homosexual, or female?

Or which is tearing down the education system in the developed world?

Or which has been ceaselessly eroding personal freedoms and privacy in the developed world for decades?

Or, to break out the dog whistle, the issues we currently face with the world's climate?

Do we have many other problems at the moment? Pisspot cult-of-personality "communist" dictatorships don't really count as leftist I'm afraid, even if they are rampant, and those that remain generally don't pose much of a threat to anyone outside their own borders.

Right... that "rampant leftism". And in the end you're talking about what is effectively a centre-right political party anyway. It's revealing; that you believe it's either "leftist" or "rampant."

Julia Gillard is also not responsible for any of it.

To elaborate, a lot of the Australian warnings (and there sure are a lot of them) appear to be about consumer protection and and competition law. They appear to be worried that the claiming of generic terms and descriptions for entire markets could turn out to be anticompetitive, which I don't think is an unreasonable concern.

Re: How old is he?

I don't presume to know anything about him but around here a lot of East Asian migrants adopt a western or westernised name because it's too difficult for the locals to pronounce their birth name.

If that's the case, bonus points if he chose the name himself.

Re: Ole Juul

Between 1992 and 1996 Australia phased in polymer banknotes for all denominations, so we have a fair amount of experience with them.

I've never found sticking together to be a serious problem but they will if they're flat and they get wet or contaminated, a situation in which sticking together is the least of your worries if you're dealing with fibre banknotes. People handling them will quickly get used to the change; you never hear of handling or counting problems here.

They're more expensive to produce and they do eventually fall apart but they're impermeable, waterproof, are much tougher than fibre banknotes and thus last far longer, at least Australian ones do.

Re: DougS

"But at half the price, it is twice as good of an investment as it was in May :)"

"Good" is not the word I'd use. It's like saying HIV's twice as good as cancer because it takes longer to kill you. It's a false dichotomy and neither alternative is good.

And if $20 is twice as good as $40, then is bankruptcy infinitely better than $40?

Sorry that handle is already taken. Silver badge

Your "positive" scenario assume that Facebook's share price will grow. Have you checked its P/E lately? Either there's something particularly special about the company that not many people can see, or the share price still has a long way to fall.
